Camping near Niland, California
Niland is a small unincorporated town in Imperial County on the southeastern shore of the Salton Sea, between the Chocolate Mountains and the sea itself. The area sits well below sea level in the Sonoran Desert and functions primarily as a winter RV destination, drawing snowbirds from across North America between roughly October and April.
Campground options in the immediate area split into two categories. Hot mineral spa resorts cluster along the eastern shore and offer full-hookup RV sites, artesian mineral pools, and long-stay amenities. Fountain Of Youth Spa And RV Resort, Bashford's Hot Mineral Spa, and Glamis North Hot Springs Resort all cater to extended winter stays, while West Shores RV Park sits on the opposite shore near Salton City. Closer to town, Mojos Camp provides a more rustic, community-oriented base near Slab City and Salvation Mountain. The nearby Salton Sea State Recreation Area adds developed and primitive shoreline camping under the California State Parks system. Renters should plan around extreme summer heat and confirm seasonal hours before traveling.
Things to do near Niland
The headline attractions are Salvation Mountain and Slab City, both reached by driving east from Niland on Main Street, which becomes Beal Road. The Slabs sit on the concrete foundations of the former Camp Dunlap and host an evolving collection of desert art, including East Jesus. Soaking is a major draw: hot mineral pools at Fountain Of Youth Spa And RV Resort, Bashford's Hot Mineral Spa, and Glamis North Hot Springs Resort are central to the area's appeal. The Salton Sea itself offers birdwatching along the Pacific Flyway, shoreline walks, and surreal photography around Bombay Beach. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and the Imperial Sand Dunes near Glamis lie within a reasonable drive for hiking and off-highway riding. Active military training continues at the Chocolate Mountain Aerial Gunnery Range north of town, so stay on marked roads.

December - February
70° / 45°F 12 mmPeak season; snowbirds fill RV resorts and Slab City
Niland operates on a strongly inverted desert calendar. The peak season runs from October through April, when daytime highs are comfortable and overnight lows stay mild. This window aligns with snowbird arrivals at the spa resorts and the busiest months at Slab City, when thousands of seasonal visitors settle in around Niland for the winter.
Summer is harsh. Daytime highs frequently exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit in June, July, and August, and overnight lows often stay above 80. Many seasonal residents leave, some private resorts curtail activities, and the Salton Sea State Recreation Area shifts to a first-come, first-served pattern from June through September after the reservable season ends. RV renters traveling in summer should plan for serious heat management, including shaded sites, reliable air conditioning, and ample water.
Spring brings wind and occasional dust, while fall cools quickly through October and November. Late-summer monsoon moisture can produce isolated thunderstorms, and washes near the mountains can flash flood during heavy rain.
How to book campgrounds near Niland
Private RV resorts in the Niland area handle their own reservations directly. Fountain Of Youth Spa And RV Resort, Bashford's Hot Mineral Spa, Glamis North Hot Springs Resort, and West Shores RV Park all take bookings by phone or through their own websites, and many guests reserve months ahead for the October-through-April window. Long stays are common, and some properties require minimum stays for villa-style or park-model units. Mojos Camp near Slab City operates informally; contact the camp directly before arriving. For Salton Sea State Recreation Area, reservations are handled through ReserveCalifornia and can be booked up to six months in advance. Sites at the developed Headquarters, New Camp, and Mecca Beach campgrounds are reservable from October through May and shift to first-come, first-served from June through September.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a stark, low-elevation desert landscape with the Salton Sea on one side and the Chocolate Mountains on the other. Cell coverage is generally reliable along Highway 111 and in the spa resorts, and many sites report usable signal out at Slab City. Roads east of Niland turn to dirt quickly and can be rough or dusty; high-clearance helps past Salvation Mountain. Services in Niland itself are limited to a small store and basic supplies, so stock up in Brawley or Indio for groceries, fuel, and propane. The sea has a noticeable sulfur odor on warm days, and shorelines can be soft. A U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint operates on State Route 111, so carry ID. Pets are welcome at most private resorts but are not permitted on beaches or trails inside Salton Sea State Recreation Area.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Niland, CA
How much does an RV rental in Niland cost, and how can I save?
Great news: an RV rental in Niland is one of the most affordable ways to experience the Salton Sea, Slab City, and Salvation Mountain. Travel trailers on RVezy typically run about $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275, and luxury Class A rigs $250 and up, before fuel and add-ons. To score a cheap RV rental Niland travelers love, book midweek, aim for shoulder months like late October or early April, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: snowbird season (December through February) brings strong demand around Fountain of Youth Spa, so locking in 60+ days ahead saves the most.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Niland,CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Niland, California?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Niland, no commercial or special endorsement required, even for big Class A motorhomes. You'll need to be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during booking, so there's no awkward paperwork at pickup. International visitors should grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from their home auto club before flying in. Imperial County roads around Niland are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked, making this area a confidence-building spot for your first RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Niland?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Niland through RVezy includes a protection package plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on watching the sun set over the Chocolate Mountains instead of worrying about the unexpected. The protection package covers most damages to the vehicle and gives you real financial peace of mind (this is protection, not traditional insurance). During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your trip, hosts don't pick this for you. Pro tip: desert dust storms can blow through the Salton Sea basin, so the higher tiers are popular with renters heading to Slab City for the first time.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if my plans change? Can I cancel my Niland RV booking?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility depends on factors like how far out your trip is and whether circumstances such as natural disasters apply, common in this region during summer monsoon flash-flood events near the Salton Sea. You'll see the exact terms during checkout. Pro tip: many Niland RV trip planners book 3 to 6 months out for the cool November through March window, then finalize routes later, knowing the cancellation policy has their back.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Niland RV trip?
Absolutely, and Niland is a fantastic place to road trip with a pup. Filter for a pet-friendly RV rental Niland on RVezy and you'll find plenty of hosts who welcome dogs (some charge a small pet fee, all listed up front). Dogs are allowed in developed campground areas at Salton Sea State Recreation Area on a six-foot leash, though not on the beach or trails. Slab City is famously dog-friendly and full of free spirits and their pets. Pro tip: bring booties, the desert ground near Bombay Beach can hit 130°F in summer, and always pack extra water for your buddy.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21261Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Niland?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery Niland to nearby spots like Salton Sea State Recreation Area, Fountain of Youth Spa RV Resort, or even right to the edge of Slab City near Salvation Mountain. The host drops off the rig, levels it, hooks up power and water, and walks you through every system, generator, slide-outs, awning, the works. Just message the host from the listing page to confirm delivery distance and fee. Pro tip: delivery is gold for first-timers who'd rather skip towing a 30-foot trailer down Highway 111.
rvezy.com/How far can I drive on a Niland RV rental, and are unlimited miles available?
You've got room to roam. Most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage as an upgrade or for longer bookings. From Niland you're 40 minutes to Brawley, 90 minutes to Palm Springs, about 2 hours to Joshua Tree National Park's south entrance, 2.5 hours to San Diego, and 3.5 to 4 hours to Los Angeles. Each listing shows the mileage policy and overage rate clearly before you book. Pro tip: if you're planning a big RV road trip from Niland up the Salton Sea and into Anza-Borrego, ask the host about a flat-rate weekly mileage package, it almost always beats paying per mile.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhere are the best campgrounds near Niland for RV camping?
You've got a great mix within 20 minutes. Top picks for RV camping Niland include: Fountain of Youth Spa RV Resort (15 miles north, full hookups and natural mineral pools), Bashford's Hot Mineral Spa (about 17 miles, full hookups and soaking pools), Mecca Beach and Headquarters Campgrounds at Salton Sea State Recreation Area (15 to 25 miles, hookups, hot showers, reservable via ReserveCalifornia), Imperial County's Red Hill Marina County Park (under 10 miles, basic sites with stunning bird-watching), and the legendary free dispersed camping at Slab City just 4 miles northeast on Beal Road. Pro tip: book Salton Sea SRA hookup sites 2 to 3 months ahead for January and February.
reservecalifornia.com/When is the best time to visit Niland in an RV?
The sweet spot is mid-October through mid-April. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s and 80s, nights cool to the 40s and 50s, and the Salton Sea sunsets are unreal. November through February is peak snowbird season and prime for bird-watching on the Pacific Flyway. March often delivers desert wildflowers in nearby Anza-Borrego. Summer is a different beast: June through September regularly tops 105°F to 115°F, so plan early-morning drives and sites with strong shore power for AC. Pro tip: the Bombay Beach Biennale (alternating springs) and Slab City's Saturday-night live music at The Range make February and March bookings disappear fast, so plan ahead.
weather.gov/sgx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Niland?
You're in luck, this is one of the easier places in California to learn. Highway 111 between Niland, Calipatria, and the Salton Sea is flat, straight, and rarely congested, perfect for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, propane, slide-outs, and dumping, and 24/7 roadside support is included with your booking. If parallel parking a 28-foot Class C makes you nervous, ask about delivery so the rig is set up before you arrive. Pro tip: do your first practice drive on Highway 111 north toward Mecca, wide shoulders, light traffic, and gorgeous Salton Sea views.
dot.ca.gov/What happens if something breaks down during my Niland RV trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Beal Road or a battery hiccup at Mecca Beach Campground is a phone call away from being handled. Your host is also reachable for quick how-to questions (think: how do I reset the inverter?), and RVezy's support team backs you up before, during, and after the trip. Cell service is solid on Highway 111 and most of Niland; expect spotty coverage deep in Slab City or Anza-Borrego backcountry. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and roadside number before leaving the driveway, faster help if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Niland?
You're sitting on one of California's most underrated launchpads. A classic RV road trip from Niland hits Salvation Mountain and Slab City (4 miles), Bombay Beach art installations (20 miles), Salton Sea State Recreation Area (25 miles), Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and its International Dark Sky skies (about 75 miles), Joshua Tree National Park's south entrance via Cottonwood (about 90 miles), and Palm Springs (about 80 miles). Cross-state into Arizona? Yuma is roughly 90 miles southeast. Heads up: travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals due to insurance limits, even though the border is just 60 miles south. Pro tip: a 5-day loop through Slab City, Anza-Borrego, and Joshua Tree is the ultimate desert sampler.
nps.gov/jotr/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Niland RV trip?
Plan smart and you'll be fine. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. California gas prices typically run higher than the national average, so fuel up across the state line in Yuma, Arizona (about 90 miles) when feasible, it's often 80 cents to a dollar cheaper per gallon. Closer to Niland, the Pilot in Calipatria and stations in Brawley have the area's most consistent diesel and unleaded supply. Pro tip: a 4-night Niland RV trip in a Class C usually burns $150 to $250 in fuel, leave a buffer for AC-heavy summer drives.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Niland?
Plan ahead and you'll get the spot you want. Salton Sea State Recreation Area takes reservations through ReserveCalifornia up to 6 months in advance for Headquarters and Mecca Beach hookup sites, October through May only; June through September is first-come, first-served. Fountain of Youth Spa fills up 2 to 4 months ahead for January through March snowbird season. Anza-Borrego's Borrego Palm Canyon also opens 6 months out and weekend hookup sites can vanish the day they release. Slab City and Red Hill Marina are walk-in. Pro tip: set a ReserveCalifornia alert at 8 a.m. Pacific exactly 6 months before your target arrival date to grab prime sites.
reservecalifornia.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Niland?
Easygoing, with a couple of desert quirks to know. Highway 111 (the main artery through Niland) is flat, paved, two-lane, and well-maintained, no mountain passes or tight switchbacks. Watch for blowing sand and dust storms when winds pick up over the Salton Sea, occasional flash floods on dirt roads after summer monsoons, and farm-equipment traffic in the Imperial Valley. Beal Road into Slab City turns to washboard dirt past Salvation Mountain, fine for most RVs at low speed, but go slow past Mojo's Camp where dips have surprised drivers. Pro tip: top off fuel and water in Brawley before heading north, services thin out fast past Calipatria.
dot.ca.gov/Where can I dump tanks and refill water near Niland?
You've got solid options nearby. The Two Rivers Rest Area between Calipatria and Brawley on Highway 111 has historically offered an RV dump, and full-service RV parks along the Salton Sea, Fountain of Youth Spa, Bashford's Hot Mineral Spa, and Salton Sea SRA's Headquarters Campground, all have dump stations and potable water fills (small fee for non-guests at most). Slab City has zero hookups, water, or sewer, so arrive with full fresh tanks and empty grey/black tanks if you're boondocking there. Pro tip: most Niland boondockers fill up at Fountain of Youth Spa on the way in, it's $5 to $10 and saves a long detour later.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=639What amenities should I expect inside a Niland RV rental?
More than you'd think. Most motorhome rental Niland options include a real bed (or two), full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette, AC and furnace, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many include a generator (essential for boondocking at Slab City), solar panels, outdoor speakers, and TVs; some have Wi-Fi boosters or Starlink, increasingly popular for desert dispersed camping. Each RVezy listing spells out exactly what's onboard. Pro tip: for a Niland trip, prioritize rigs with strong AC, a generator or solar, and large fresh-water tanks (40+ gallons), the desert rewards self-sufficiency.
rvezy.com/Can I add things like camp chairs, generators, or bikes to my rental?
Yes, and Niland-area hosts have curated their add-ons for desert trips. Common options include camp chairs and tables, outdoor rugs, generators with extra fuel, e-bikes and beach cruisers (great for cruising around Slab City art installations), Starlink or Wi-Fi hotspots, telescopes for Anza-Borrego dark-sky nights, propane fire pits, and stocked kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Niland, Calipatria, or Brawley, with delivery to Salton Sea SRA or Fountain of Youth Spa available from many hosts for a flat fee. Mileage policies, pet rules, and add-ons are all spelled out on the listing. Pro tip: bundle a generator with extended mileage for the best value on a 4+ day trip.
rvezy.com/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It's straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card, never directly to the host, and your trip total (rental, fees, protection, taxes) is shown clearly before you confirm. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold (not a charge) before pickup and released after the trip if there are no damages or policy violations. Hosts set deposit amounts based on the rig's value, and you'll see it on the listing. Pro tip: before driving off, do a quick walk-around video with your host showing tires, body panels, awning, and interior, this 2-minute habit is the easiest way to keep your full deposit on every Niland RV rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I survive (and enjoy) Niland's summer heat in an RV?
With the right setup, summer here is doable and even magical at sunrise. Niland summers regularly hit 105°F to 115°F from June through September, so book an RV with strong roof AC (ideally two units on Class A rigs), shore power at a full-hookup park like Fountain of Youth Spa or Salton Sea SRA Headquarters, blackout shades, and a generator if you plan any boondocking. Drive early morning or after sunset, hydrate constantly, and park with the door facing away from the afternoon sun. Pro tip: shoulder seasons (October and April) are the smart-money move, fewer crowds, daytime highs in the 80s, and rates often 20 to 30% cheaper than peak winter on a campervan rental Niland.
