Campgrounds near North Shore, California
North Shore sits on the northeast side of the Salton Sea in Riverside County, at the eastern edge of the Coachella Valley. The community is flanked to the north and south by the Salton Sea State Recreation Area, which is the anchor for RV camping in the area and is operated by California State Parks. The shoreline elevation is roughly 235 feet below sea level, and the surrounding landscape is open desert backed by the Santa Rosa and Chocolate Mountains.
RV options cluster in two bands. State park sites at Mecca Beach offer some full hookup sites directly on the water, while Corvina Beach is a primitive shoreline area with no hookups. Private parks fill in the rest: West Shores RV Park on the lake's western side, Oasis Palms RV Park near the eastern shore, and Glamis North Hot Springs Resort to the southeast, which adds mineral pools to the typical desert hookup setup. Joshua Tree National Park's south entrance and the Coachella Valley resort towns are within an easy day's drive.
Things to do near North Shore
The Salton Sea itself drives most activity: birdwatching is exceptional, with the lake serving as a major stop on the Pacific Flyway, and the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge at the south end is a popular day trip. Shoreline walks at Mecca Beach and Corvina Beach turn up barnacle-crusted beaches and wide desert views. Anglers target tilapia, though high salinity continues to affect fish populations. Glamis North Hot Springs Resort offers soaking pools as a low-key base activity. Day trips reach Joshua Tree National Park's Cottonwood entrance, the date farms around Mecca and Thermal, Box Canyon Road, and Painted Canyon's slot hikes in the Mecca Hills. Families also use North Shore as a quieter alternative to Coachella Valley resort traffic.

70° / 45°F 12 mmPeak season; mild days, cool nights, bird migration
This is a cool-season destination. The Salton Sea basin is one of the hottest places in North America from June through September, with afternoon highs commonly above 105 F and overnight lows that stay warm. Many travelers avoid the area in midsummer, and some private parks reduce services or shift to long-term residents during the hottest months. Air conditioning, shade, and full hookups are essentially required for any summer stay.
The prime window runs from late October through April. Daytime temperatures sit in a comfortable range for hiking, cycling, and birding, and migratory bird activity peaks in winter. Spring brings wildflower bloom in the surrounding hills and warmer water. Rainfall is minimal year round, but brief, intense thunderstorms can occur during the late-summer monsoon, and gusty winds with blowing dust are common across the basin in spring. Holiday weekends from Thanksgiving through President's Day are the busiest periods at state park sites.

How to book campgrounds near North Shore
Sites at Mecca Beach inside Salton Sea State Recreation Area are reserved through ReserveCalifornia, the California State Parks booking system. Reservations open on a rolling six-month window, with new dates released at 8 a.m. Pacific Time each day, and winter weekends at the state park book up earliest. Corvina Beach is run as a primitive, first-come, first-served area, and other walk-in sites are sometimes available midweek, but they should not be counted on during peak season. Private parks handle bookings directly. West Shores RV Park, Oasis Palms RV Park, and Glamis North Hot Springs Resort each take phone and online reservations, with longer minimum stays around major holidays. Confirm rig length, slide clearance, and whether the site offers full hookups or water and electric only before locking in a reservation.
What to expect when camping near North Shore
Expect open desert conditions with little natural shade. Mecca Beach has flush toilets, hot showers, picnic tables, and fire rings, with some sites offering full hookups and many that are standard. Corvina Beach is primitive: pit toilets, cold showers, and no hookups, so arrive with full fresh-water tanks and a generator plan. Private parks such as West Shores RV Park, Oasis Palms RV Park, and Glamis North Hot Springs Resort offer full hookups, laundry, and longer-stay amenities. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the State Route 111 corridor but can drop on canyon side trips. The lake has a strong sulfur odor at times, especially during summer fish die-offs. Pack sun protection, sturdy footwear for crusty shorelines, and extra water for any inland hike.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near North Shore, CA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in North Shore, CA?
RV rental in North Shore, CA is one of the more affordable desert getaways in Southern California, with travel trailers often starting around $90 to $130 per night and Class C motorhomes typically running $175 to $275 per night on RVezy. Because North Shore sits on the quieter side of the Salton Sea, about 30 miles south of Indio, you'll usually pay less than comparable Coachella Valley rentals just up Highway 111. To find a cheap RV rental in North Shore, book midweek nights, travel in shoulder months like late October or early March, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: Coachella and Stagecoach festival weekends in April spike pricing for miles around, so booking 4 to 6 months ahead locks in the best rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Shore%2C%20CaliforniaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in North Shore?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in North Shore, California. No commercial driver's license, no special RV endorsement, and no extra desert-driving permit is required, even for the larger Class A motorhomes you'll see cruising Highway 111 toward the Salton Sea. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy will verify your ID through the booking platform in just a few minutes. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country driver's license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your local auto club, usually under $25. That's it. Most first-timers are surprised how quickly they go from clicking 'Book' to picking up the keys.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in North Shore protected if something goes wrong?
Absolutely, every RVezy booking in North Shore comes with a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the desert sunsets instead of worst-case scenarios. The protection plan covers most damages to the vehicle during your trip, and during checkout you can choose from different coverage tiers to match your comfort level. While this isn't auto insurance in the traditional sense, it gives renters real financial peace of mind on remote stretches like Box Canyon Road or the drive between Mecca Beach and Bombay Beach. Hosts don't pick the coverage level, you do. Pro tip: pick the higher tier if it's your first time renting an RV. The small daily bump is worth the relaxed mindset.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my North Shore RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and the same platform-wide rules apply across every listing, so you won't see different cancellation terms from one host to another. Refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date and the situation. If a host cancels on you, you'll receive a full refund or RVezy credits with no penalty on your end, which matters in a region prone to summer monsoon storms and the occasional desert flash flood near the Mecca Hills. Pro tip: review the cancellation details on your booking confirmation before your trip, then message your host early to lock in pickup logistics with confidence.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a North Shore RV trip?
Yes, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in North Shore are ready for your four-legged copilot. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) right in their listing. Salton Sea State Recreation Area is dog-friendly too: leashed pets (6-foot leash max) are welcome in developed areas like the Headquarters, Mecca Beach, Corvina Beach, Salt Creek, and New Camp campgrounds, though they're not allowed on hiking trails or the beaches. The shaded picnic ramadas at Headquarters Camp are a favorite for dog owners escaping the midday sun. Pro tip: bring booties, the shoreline barnacles and hot sand near Mecca Beach are tough on paws in summer.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=639Can the RV be delivered to my campsite in North Shore?
Yes, RV delivery in North Shore is one of the smartest moves for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts will drive the rig to Salton Sea State Recreation Area, Oasis Palms RV Park in Thermal, Fountain of Youth Spa RV Resort, or even a private property along Highway 111, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means zero stress about backing a 30-foot motorhome into a desert site. Just look for the Delivery filter when searching, and message the host with your exact campsite number. Pro tip: delivery is gold for Coachella and Stagecoach festival campers since you skip the chaotic festival driving entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-rentals/campground/fc022deb-9c05-484c-9974-1e454da7424cHow far can I drive from North Shore on an RV trip?
You've got an incredible playground within a tank or two of fuel from North Shore. Joshua Tree National Park's south entrance at Cottonwood is just 45 miles north, Palm Springs is about 50 miles up Highway 111, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park sits roughly 75 miles southwest, and San Diego is around 150 miles via Interstate 8. Want a bigger RV road trip from North Shore? Los Angeles is 165 miles, Las Vegas is around 285 miles, and the Grand Canyon's South Rim is a doable 450-mile journey. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage allowance, with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: if you're chasing wildflowers, message hosts about unlimited mileage for the Anza-Borrego super bloom loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhere can I park or camp my RV near North Shore?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping near North Shore. Salton Sea State Recreation Area runs five campgrounds with about 1,600 sites, including 14 to 15 full-hookup spots at Headquarters Camp, developed sites at Mecca Beach and New Camp, and primitive beachfront camping at Corvina Beach and Salt Creek. Oasis Palms RV Park in Thermal welcomes rigs up to 60 feet, and Fountain of Youth Spa RV Resort near Niland offers mineral pools across hundreds of sites. For a quirkier vibe, Bombay Beach and free-camping Slab City sit on the eastern shore (note: the Bombay Beach campground itself is closed). Reservations for the State Recreation Area open six months ahead through ReserveCalifornia. Pro tip: Headquarters Camp full-hookups book up first for winter weekends, snag them as soon as the window opens.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21261When is the best time of year for an RV trip to North Shore?
October through May is the sweet spot for RV camping in North Shore, with daytime highs typically running 65 to 85 degrees F and crisp nights in the 45 to 60 degrees F range, perfect for campfires on the Salton Sea shoreline. November through March is peak snowbird season, when birdwatchers flock to the sea to spot some of the 400-plus wintering species like white pelicans, herons, and kingfishers. June through September pushes 100 to 115 degrees F and is genuinely brutal, so most hosts and campgrounds quiet down. Pro tip: late February into March pairs warm days with the Anza-Borrego wildflower bloom and is hands down the most magical time for a North Shore RV trip.
parks.ca.gov/saltonsea/I'm a first-time renter, will the host help me figure things out?
Yes, and that's the best part of renting on RVezy. Every host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering propane, generator, slide-outs, awning, freshwater fill, gray and black tank dumping, and the quirks of their specific rig. Many North Shore hosts also share a printed cheat-sheet and stay reachable by text the entire trip, which is reassuring when you're 227 feet below sea level on a remote stretch of Highway 111 with limited cell service. If you're nervous, book a host with delivery so the RV arrives already set up at your Salton Sea SRA campsite. Pro tip: ask your host to demo the leveling jacks twice, that's the one step first-timers most often forget.
rvezy.com/rv-rentals/destination/united-states/california/salton-cityWhat happens if the RV breaks down near North Shore?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 111, a dead battery at Mecca Beach, or a lockout at Oasis Palms RV Park is one phone call away from help. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip, and your host's number is right in the app for any rig-specific questions. Cell coverage is solid along Highway 111 and Interstate 10 but spotty inside the Mecca Hills Wilderness, so download offline Google Maps before you head into Painted Canyon. Pro tip: keep an extra gallon of water and a tire gauge handy, the desert heat is hard on tire pressure.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take the RV across state lines or into Mexico from North Shore?
Cross-state travel is wide open: most RVezy hosts in North Shore allow trips into Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, making epic loops to Sedona, Lake Havasu, Zion, or Las Vegas totally on the table. Just confirm the host's travel radius on the listing or send a quick message before booking. Mexico, however, is off the table on RVezy rentals because the protection plan does not cover travel south of the border, even though Mexicali is only about 90 miles south of North Shore. Pro tip: a popular RV road trip from North Shore is the loop east on Interstate 10 to Joshua Tree, then north to Lake Havasu and back through Palm Springs, all within typical host mileage policies.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a North Shore RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the rental, so budgeting smart matters. Class C motorhomes near North Shore average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, campervans get 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 mpg loaded). California gas prices in the Coachella Valley tend to run higher than the national average, so fill up in Indio or Coachella before heading south on Highway 111, since stations get sparse and pricier past Mecca. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, plan on roughly $180 to $240 in fuel. Pro tip: Costco in Palm Desert is the cheapest fill-up within 40 miles of North Shore.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near North Shore?
For Salton Sea State Recreation Area, book through ReserveCalifornia up to six months in advance, that's when the reservation window opens, and the full-hookup sites at Headquarters Camp go fastest for weekends from November through March. Mecca Beach and the primitive Corvina Beach and Salt Creek spots are usually easier to grab, even within a few weeks of your trip, and summer (June to September) is first-come, first-served. Private parks like Oasis Palms and Fountain of Youth take reservations directly through their websites and tend to fill up January through March with snowbirds. Pro tip: if your dates are locked, reserve the campground first, then book your RVezy rig to match. It's the single biggest stress-saver for a North Shore RV trip.
reservecalifornia.com/What are driving conditions like around North Shore?
Driving around North Shore is refreshingly mellow, mostly flat two-lane Highway 111 hugging the Salton Sea, with light traffic and wide shoulders. The biggest things to plan for are crosswinds funneling through the Coachella Valley (especially near Whitewater and the wind farms on Interstate 10), heat-related tire stress in summer, and the occasional flash-flood washout along Box Canyon Road after monsoon rains. There are no steep mountain passes between North Shore and Indio, which makes it a great area for first-time motorhome drivers. Avoid driving midday in July and August when pavement temperatures soar. Pro tip: leave the Coachella Valley before 9 a.m. heading west on Interstate 10, traffic into Los Angeles thickens fast on Sunday afternoons.
quickmap.dot.ca.gov/How do I manage the desert heat in an RV around the Salton Sea?
Smart planning makes summer doable, but October through May is the smart-money move for any RV trip in North Shore. If you do come in summer, book a rig with dual roof air conditioners and confirm with your host that the generator can run AC while boondocking, since most state park sites at Salton Sea SRA don't have shore power. Drive in the early morning, park with the door facing north, and use reflective windshield covers. Hydration matters: temps regularly hit 105 to 115 degrees F from June to September, and humidity from the sea makes it feel even hotter. Pro tip: Headquarters Camp is the only Salton Sea SRA campground with full hookups, which means uninterrupted AC, worth its weight in gold in shoulder season.
parks.ca.gov/saltonsea/What amenities do campgrounds near North Shore offer?
Campground amenities around North Shore range from full-resort to back-to-basics, so you can pick your comfort level. Headquarters Camp at Salton Sea State Recreation Area has full-hookup sites with water, sewer, and 50-amp electric, plus flush restrooms and showers. Mecca Beach and New Camp offer flush toilets and showers (with some partial hookups), while Corvina Beach and Salt Creek are primitive beachfront camping with vault toilets. The Salton Sea SRA Headquarters has a dump station and potable water fill. Oasis Palms RV Park in Thermal and Fountain of Youth near Niland deliver full hookups, pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Pro tip: top off freshwater and dump tanks at Headquarters before heading deeper into Anza-Borrego or Joshua Tree, services get scarce east of Highway 86.
parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21261What's typically included inside a North Shore RV rental?
Most motorhome rentals in North Shore come fully outfitted to roll. Expect a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette or bunk space, a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, plus a full bathroom with shower and toilet. Class C and Class A rigs include a generator (great for boondocking off Highway 111), roof air conditioning, propane heat for chilly desert nights, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor TVs, solar panels, and starter kits with linens and dish soap. Campervan rental in North Shore tends to be more compact but adventure-ready. Pro tip: confirm generator hours allowed at the Salton Sea SRA, quiet hours run 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
parks.ca.gov/saltonsea/What add-ons or extras can I get with my North Shore RV rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer a smart menu of add-ons that make a family RV trip in North Shore easier. Common extras include camp chairs and tables, outdoor rugs, propane grills, generators, bike racks, kayaks (perfect for paddling near Mecca Beach), portable solar panels, linen and kitchen kits, and Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is usually at the host's home in the Coachella Valley (think Indio, La Quinta, or Palm Desert), with delivery available to most Salton Sea-area campgrounds for a flat fee. Mileage policies vary, with some hosts including 100 to 150 miles per night and others offering unlimited. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a starter kit, your first hour at camp turns into a sunset stroll instead of a setup scramble.
rvezy.com/rv-rentals/destination/united-states/california/salton-cityHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and entirely handled through the RVezy platform, no cash, no awkward host-to-guest transfers. You'll pay your rental total at booking using a credit or debit card, and the host receives funds after your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is also placed as a hold on your card before pickup, with the amount set by the host and shown clearly on the listing before you book. As long as the RV comes back in the same condition (tanks dumped, no damage, fueled per the agreement), the hold is released after your trip wraps. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff in North Shore, it's the single best way to keep your deposit drama-free.
