Campgrounds and RV parks near Rancho Mirage, CA

Golf, hiking, and pool time dominate the agenda. The Coachella Valley holds dozens of public and resort golf courses, and Rancho Mirage hosts the Sunnylands estate and gardens. Hiking trails in the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument start minutes from town, and the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway climbs from the desert floor to alpine terrain in Mount San Jacinto State Park. Joshua Tree National Park is roughly an hour north and is the main day-trip draw for RV travelers, with rock scrambling, short trails, and dark-sky stargazing. Families can also visit the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in nearby Palm Desert, the Coachella Valley Preserve oasis, and date farms along Highway 111. Downtown Palm Springs offers restaurants, the VillageFest street fair on Thursday evenings, and mid-century modern architecture tours.

The Coachella Valley runs on an inverted travel season. Peak demand is roughly November through April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable range and snowbirds from across the United States and Canada fill RV resorts for weeks or months. Many private parks publish a winter rate season tied to these months, and sites at the most popular resorts can be reserved a year or more ahead for January through March stays. February and March add Coachella Valley special events, the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in Indian Wells, and the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals in April, which tighten availability across the valley. Summer is the opposite story. June through September brings extreme desert heat, with afternoon highs routinely above 40°C, and some private resorts reduce hours or amenities. Joshua Tree National Park keeps several campgrounds open year-round but enforces an annual campfire ban from June 15 to October 1, and rangers warn that summer heat and flash flooding are real risks. Shoulder months in October and May tend to balance warm days, lower demand, and easier reservations.

Most private campgrounds in the Rancho Mirage area are full-hookup resorts geared to large rigs, with paved interior roads, pools, hot tubs, pickleball, clubhouses, and laundry. Several parks are 55-plus or have adult-focused sections during winter, so families with kids should confirm age policies before booking. Pets are generally welcome on leash. Cell service is reliable across the valley but drops off quickly inside Joshua Tree National Park, where there are no showers at park campgrounds and no firewood is sold inside the park boundary. Plan for desert conditions: bring extra drinking water, sun protection, and shade. Wind events can arrive with little warning in any season, and summer monsoon storms can produce flash flooding in washes and low spots. Inside Joshua Tree, an annual campfire ban runs from June 15 to October 1.
