Joshua Tree National Park is the headline trip from Thermal. The south entrance at Cottonwood is the closest gate, reached from Interstate 10 at exit 168, with Cholla Cactus Garden and the park interior reachable on a long day loop. Closer in, Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park offers shore fishing in a stocked lake at the base of the Santa Rosa Mountains, plus hiking and equestrian trails. The Salton Sea State Recreation Area, on the lake's northeastern shore, draws birders during the Pacific Flyway migrations and is known for hundreds of wintering bird species. Families use the resort pools and pickleball courts at parks like Coachella Lakes RV Resort and Outdoor Resort Indio.
