Campgrounds and RV parks near Black Diamond, FL

The signature activity is manatee viewing. Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1983, is the only refuge created specifically for the protection of the threatened Florida manatee, and it preserves Three Sisters Springs, the last unspoiled and undeveloped spring habitat in Kings Bay. Each winter, over 600 manatees migrate to the warm, spring-fed waters of Kings Bay, where the springs discharge water at a near-constant temperature around 72 degrees Fahrenheit. The official manatee season at the refuge runs from November 15 through March 31. Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park showcases Florida's native wildlife, including manatees, Florida panthers, American alligators, red wolves, and a range of birds and reptiles. Kayak rentals, snorkel tours, and pontoon trips launch from operators around Kings Bay and the Homosassa River. Inland, the Withlacoochee State Trail offers paved cycling, and Fort Island Gulf Beach is a short drive to the water.

Winter is the peak RV season. Cool, dry weather draws snowbirds from November through March, and the window overlaps with manatee season, which runs from mid-November through late March. Private RV parks around Crystal River fill early during this stretch, and weekend availability becomes tight from January into early March. Spring shoulder months, particularly April and May, bring warm days, moderate humidity, and thinner crowds. Water clarity in the springs stays high, and paddling conditions are generally calm. This period is often the best trade-off between weather and availability for families. Summer is hot, humid, and stormy, with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms and the highest rainfall totals of the year, peaking in July and August. It also overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks in August and September. The Florida Forest Service closes all campgrounds and recreation areas on state forests when a county is placed under a tropical storm or hurricane warning, and reservations are refunded for closures related to tropical weather. Fall cools gradually through October and November, and manatee arrivals begin building again by mid-November.

Terrain around Black Diamond is flat to gently rolling, with limestone karst features and a mix of pine, oak, and cypress. Roads are RV-friendly: U.S. 19, U.S. 41, and State Road 44 all handle larger rigs, and the private parks near Crystal River generally offer paved or hard-packed pads with full hookups. Expect Florida wildlife: alligators in fresh water, wading birds along the marshes, and mosquitoes and no-see-ums in the warmer months. Insect repellent, screen maintenance, and secured food storage are worth planning for. Summer heat indexes routinely climb past 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so shaded sites and functioning air conditioning matter. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV service are available in Crystal River, Lecanto, and Inverness. Cell coverage is generally reliable across the major carriers, and most private parks provide Wi-Fi, though speeds vary.
