Campgrounds near Cedar Key
Cedar Key sits at the end of State Road 24 on Florida's Big Bend coast, a cluster of small islands about 50 miles southwest of Gainesville. RV options cluster on and just off the island, with waterfront and marsh-view sites facing the Gulf and a mix of full-hookup private parks within a short drive of the historic downtown.
Sunset Isle RV Resort and Cedar Key RV Resort are the closest to town, both popular with travelers who want to bike or walk to the harbor, restaurants, and boat launches. Anglers RV Campground caters to fishing-focused stays, while Jasmine Breeze RV Park and Shady Oaks Campground offer quieter inland sites under tree cover, useful when Gulf-side parks are booked out.
Beyond the private parks, the surrounding Lower Suwannee and Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuges frame much of the region, and nearby state parks such as Manatee Springs and Fanning Springs provide spring-fed swimming and additional campground options within about an hour's drive.
Things to do in Cedar Key
The main draws are on the water. Paddlers launch from the town beach, city park, or Shell Mound to reach Atsena Otie Key, the closest island, with North, Snake, and Seahorse Keys as longer options subject to wind and tide. Dolphin sightings are common, and kayak fishing for redfish, trout, and flounder is a year-round pursuit.
On land, the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge nature drive begins about fifteen minutes north of downtown and passes marsh, hammock, and river habitats with short boardwalks and trails. Cedar Key Museum State Park covers local history, and the downtown dock area is the reliable stop for Cedar Key clams and Gulf seafood.

- winter
December - February
68° / 50°F 75 mmCool and dry, low bugs; peak snowbird season for RV sites
Late fall through early spring is the practical window for RV travel. Daytime highs sit in the comfortable sixties and seventies, humidity drops, and biting insects are far less active. This is also peak snowbird season, so waterfront sites at parks like Sunset Isle RV Resort and Cedar Key RV Resort fill early, particularly around the Cedar Key Seafood Festival in October and the Old Florida Celebration of the Arts in April.
Summer is hot, humid, and buggy, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through September. Mosquitoes and no-see-ums are aggressive around dawn and dusk, and screened enclosures or head nets are worth packing.
Hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in August and September. Cedar Key has taken direct hits in recent seasons, and low-lying waterfront parks can close on short notice for storm surge. Travelers booking in that window should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm cancellation policies before arrival.
How to book RV sites near Cedar Key
Private parks in the Cedar Key area, including Sunset Isle RV Resort, Cedar Key RV Resort, Anglers RV Campground, Jasmine Breeze RV Park, and Shady Oaks Campground, are reserved directly through each park's website or by phone. Waterfront pull-throughs and larger rigs should be requested well in advance for the winter and spring high season.
For nearby state parks such as Manatee Springs and Fanning Springs, reservations go through the Florida State Parks reservation system. Florida residents can book up to 11 months ahead, while non-residents are limited to a 10-month window. Shell Mound, a Levy County campground inside the wildlife refuge boundary, does not take reservations and operates first-come, first-served with cash payment on site. Weekends and festival weeks fill first, so mid-week arrivals often unlock more choice.
What to expect
Cedar Key is a small working fishing town rather than a resort strip, and the pace reflects that. Roads onto the island are narrow, and larger rigs should check park access routes and low-clearance turns in advance. Cell coverage is generally reliable in town and thins out on refuge roads.
Expect salt air, marsh views, and abundant wildlife including wading birds, dolphins, and the occasional alligator in freshwater ponds. Tides matter for launching kayaks and small boats, and shallow flats can strand a boat at low water.
Groceries and fuel are limited on the island itself, with larger supermarkets in Chiefland about thirty minutes northeast. Provision before arrival, bring insect repellent, and plan on a slower, quieter stay than at central Florida's larger resort parks.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Cedar Key, FL?
RV rental in Cedar Key, FL is surprisingly affordable, especially when you book through a peer-to-peer marketplace like RVezy. You'll typically see travel trailers starting around $90 to $130 per night, Class C motorhomes in the $150 to $225 range, and roomy Class A coaches between $200 and $350 per night, with prices climbing during the October Cedar Key Seafood Festival and the snowbird season from December through March. visitflorida.com/places-to-go/north-central/cedar-key/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Cedar Key, Florida?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Cedar Key. Florida law (Statute 322.53) specifically exempts recreational vehicles from Commercial Driver's License (CDL) requirements when used for personal travel, even for big Class A coaches over 26,000 pounds. A standard Class E license, or your equivalent home-state or international license, covers you for motorhomes, campervans, travel trailers, and fifth wheels listed on RVezy. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the platform during booking. That's it. No test, no endorsement, no DMV visit. Every RV rental in Cedar Key booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit State Road 24 toward the Gulf with real peace of mind. RVezy offers multiple protection plan tiers that you choose at checkout (not the host), each covering physical damage to the RV up to defined limits, with different deductibles and added benefits. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Cedar Key plans change?
You can book your Cedar Key RV trip with confidence. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the individual host), and there is a grace period of 24 hours after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, as long as your trip start date is more than 7 days away. After the grace period, the refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date. The full policy is shown to you during checkout and in your booking confirmation. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund. Pro tip: aim for late October or early November when hurricane season is winding down and Cedar Key weather is at its best.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Cedar Key RV trip?
Absolutely, and Cedar Key is one of the most dog-friendly spots on Florida's Nature Coast. Leashed pets are allowed on Cedar Key's public beach, at Cedar Key Museum State Park, and on trails at nearby Manatee Springs State Park, where dogs can even wade into the spring run at the canoe launch. Pro tip: Cedar Key RV Resort on SW Shiloh Road has a fenced on-site dog park, perfect after a day exploring the islands.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/manatee-springs-state-park/experiences-amenitiesCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Cedar Key?
Yes, RV delivery Cedar Key is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving over the 3-mile causeway in an unfamiliar rig. Many local hosts will drop off the motorhome or travel trailer directly at Cedar Key RV Resort, Sunset Isle RV Park, or Shell Mound Campground, level it, hook it up to power and water, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are usually based on mileage from the host's location and are shown on the listing. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm delivery to your specific campground site, and ask if they offer pickup and dump-station service at trip's end too.

Cedar Key RV Resort on SW Shiloh Road has concrete pads, full hookups, a heated pool, and a clubhouse just a few miles from downtown. Shell Mound Campground, a Levy County park about 9 miles from downtown, is the budget pick with electric and water sites near the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge. Manatee Springs State Park (about 30 miles north) is the local insider pick, with a spring-fed swimming run and a full campground. Pro tip: ask your RVezy host about delivery so you can skip towing and have the rig set up at your site.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/manatee-springs-state-parkWhen is the best time to visit Cedar Key in an RV?
The sweet spot for a Cedar Key RV trip is late October through April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 68 to 80 degree range, humidity drops, mosquitoes ease up, and rainfall is at its lowest (November is the driest month). October brings the famous Cedar Key Seafood Festival, April hosts the Old Florida Celebration of the Arts, and winter delivers the bonus of manatees gathering in nearby springs. Summer (June through September) is hot, humid, and the rainiest stretch, with August highs near 93 degrees and afternoon thunderstorms common. Pro tip: book your motorhome rental Cedar Key trip for mid-October to hit the Seafood Festival weekend and the year's driest, sunniest week.
visitflorida.com/places-to-go/north-central/cedar-key/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be supported on my Cedar Key trip?
You're in great hands, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, covering propane, water, slide-outs, generator, awning, and dump procedures, so nothing feels mysterious before you head to Cedar Key. You can message your host anytime during the trip with questions, and RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your booking. For an extra layer of confidence, choose a smaller Class B campervan rental Cedar Key listing or a Class C motorhome, both easy to drive on the 3-mile causeway into town. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick demo of the leveling system before they leave, you'll thank yourself later.
visitflorida.com/places-to-go/north-central/cedar-key/What happens if I have a breakdown or issue on my Cedar Key trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat tire on State Road 24, a dead battery at Shell Mound Campground, or a generator that will not start near Manatee Springs, help is one call away. For non-mechanical questions (how to empty the gray tank, why the AC is not cooling), message your host directly through the RVezy app since they know their rig best. RVezy support is also reachable for anything else. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone before you leave town, and snap a photo of the RV VIN plate so you can share it quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Cedar Key RV rental on a longer Florida road trip?
Yes, an RV road trip from Cedar Key is one of the best ways to see Florida. Many hosts welcome multi-stop adventures along the Gulf Coast or up to the Panhandle, just confirm your route when booking. Popular itineraries include Cedar Key to St. Augustine (about 145 miles east), Cedar Key to Crystal River and the Three Sisters Springs (55 miles south), Cedar Key to the Florida Keys (around 450 miles, a true bucket-list run), and Cedar Key to Pensacola Beach (340 miles west). Travel into Mexico isn't permitted on RVezy rentals, but interstate travel within the U.S. is generally allowed. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any state-line plans so insurance and mileage are squared away.
visitflorida.com/places-to-go/north-central/cedar-key/How much should I budget for fuel on a Cedar Key RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost on any Florida RV trip, so it helps to plan ahead. Expect roughly 7 to 10 miles per gallon (mpg) for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 16 to 22 mpg for a Class B campervan, and 12 to 18 mpg for your tow vehicle if you're pulling a travel trailer. Florida gas prices typically run a bit below the national average. From Cedar Key, the nearest full-service fuel stops are in Otter Creek (15 miles east on SR-24) and Chiefland (22 miles north), so top off before heading onto the islands. Pro tip: use GasBuddy along US-19/98 for the cheapest stations on your route.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cedar Key?
Book early and you'll lock in the best sites, especially for Cedar Key RV camping during peak season. Florida State Parks, including Manatee Springs (the closest with state-park amenities, about 30 miles north), open their reservation window 11 months ahead for residents and 10 months for non-residents through the Florida State Parks reservation system, and popular winter and holiday weekends sell out fast. Cedar Key RV Resort and Sunset Isle RV Park also fill up months ahead during snowbird season (December through March) and the October Seafood Festival. Shell Mound Campground (Levy County) is easier on short notice. Pro tip: if your dates are taken, use a cancellation-watch service or check Sunday evenings when reservations often get released.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/manatee-springs-state-park/hours-feesWhat are the driving conditions like around Cedar Key?
Driving to Cedar Key is genuinely scenic and beginner-friendly. State Road 24, the only road in and out, is a flat, well-maintained two-lane highway that crosses three low bridges and a causeway over the salt marsh, no mountains or tight switchbacks to worry about. In-town streets are slow, narrow, and built for small-town pace, so most RVers park at their campground and walk, bike, or drive a tow car into Dock Street. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms in summer, sudden Gulf fog at dawn, and the occasional gopher tortoise crossing the road. Pro tip: time your arrival before 4 p.m. so you can set up in daylight, since SR-24 has no streetlights along the final 20-mile stretch.
fdot.gov/What amenities can I expect at Cedar Key campgrounds?
Cedar Key campgrounds make hook-up life easy. At Cedar Key RV Resort you'll find big-rig friendly concrete pads with 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, a heated pool, and clean bathhouses. Sunset Isle RV Park offers waterfront full-hookup sites and a tiki bar. Shell Mound Campground has electric/water sites (no sewer) plus a dump station and is fully surrounded by the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. For potable water and dump access between trips, Manatee Springs State Park has a public dump station as part of its campground. Pro tip: if you're boondocking or staying somewhere without sewer, plan a dump-station stop in Chiefland on US-19 before heading home, it's the closest reliable option north of Cedar Key.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/manatee-springs-state-park/experiences-amenitiesWhat features will my Cedar Key RV rental come with?
RVezy listings near Cedar Key come loaded with the comforts of home. Expect real beds (queen or king in the bedroom, plus convertible sofas or bunks), a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning (essential on the Gulf Coast), a furnace for cool winter nights, and seatbelted passenger seats in motorhomes. Many rigs also include a TV, Wi-Fi hotspot or Starlink, an onboard generator, and an outdoor awning, perfect after a day of clamming or kayaking. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and amenities like Generator or TV to narrow down quickly, and confirm with the host that the air conditioning has been recently serviced, you'll want it humming in any season.
visitflorida.com/places-to-go/north-central/cedar-key/What add-ons and pickup options are available for rent an RV in Cedar Key bookings?
Hosts on RVezy offer plenty of optional extras to make your Cedar Key RV trip easier. Common add-ons include kitchen and linen packages ($50 to $150 flat), generator hours ($3 to $5 per hour beyond what's included), bikes or kayaks (great for paddling Cedar Key's backwaters), camp chairs, outdoor grills, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is typically at the host's address (often in Gainesville, Ocala, or the Cedar Key area itself), but delivery to your campground is widely available. Mileage policies usually include 100 to 150 free miles per night with reasonable overage rates. Pro tip: bundling delivery, setup, and a kayak rental from the same host often costs less than booking each piece separately, just ask.
visitflorida.com/places-to-go/north-central/cedar-key/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book your RV rental in Cedar Key, FL through RVezy, you pay through the platform (never directly to the host), with a portion charged at booking and the balance due before your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card a few days before pickup and released after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. To avoid deposit issues, do a thorough walk-around at pickup, take date-stamped photos of any existing scratches or interior wear, and return the rig clean with tanks dumped per the host's instructions. Pro tip: keep your fuel and propane receipts handy in case there is a question at checkout.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle Cedar Key's heat, humidity, and hurricane season in an RV?
With a little planning, summer in Cedar Key is totally doable, and shoulder seasons are downright dreamy. From June through September, expect highs around 90 to 94 degrees with high humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so run the RV's air conditioning on shore power (most campgrounds offer 30/50-amp service), park in shade when possible, and travel in the cooler morning hours. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30; monitor the National Hurricane Center forecast and have a flexible plan to relocate inland if a storm tracks toward the Gulf. Pro tip: for the best-weather sweet spot, book your family RV trip Cedar Key for late October through April, that's when locals say the Nature Coast truly shines.
