Camping near Citrus Hills, Florida
Citrus Hills sits in inland Citrus County on Florida's Nature Coast, roughly 75 miles north of Tampa and a short drive east of the Gulf. The area is a practical base for RV travelers who want access to spring-fed rivers, state parks, and manatee habitat without paying coastal resort rates.
Most campgrounds nearby are private RV parks with full hookups, clustered along US-19 and around Crystal River, Inverness, and Homosassa. Sandy Oaks RV Resort and Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park are close to Citrus Hills itself, while Sun Retreats Crystal River, Crystal River KOA, and Stillwater Preserve RV Resort put travelers within easy reach of Kings Bay and the Gulf.
Public land camping in the region runs through the Florida State Parks system and the Withlacoochee State Forest. Nearby state parks preserve archaeological mounds, spring runs, and coastal marshes, and several are day-use only, meaning overnight RV stays generally happen at private parks with public land visited during the day.
Things to do near Citrus Hills
Manatee viewing is the signature activity. Three Sisters Springs is a preferred refuge of wintering manatees during manatee season, from November 15 to March 31. Crystal River and nearby Homosassa are among the few places in Florida where visitors can legally get in the water with manatees on a guided tour.
Outside the springs, the area offers paddling on Kings Bay and the Homosassa and Chassahowitzka Rivers, saltwater fishing off Fort Island Gulf Beach, and cycling on the paved Withlacoochee State Trail. Crystal River Archaeological State Park preserves Native American ceremonial mounds overlooking the river, and Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is a reliable place to see manatees, otters, and native birds from boardwalks.
For families, the KOA and larger resorts add pools, playgrounds, and organized activities that fill downtime between day trips.

The peak RV season runs from November through April, driven by mild temperatures and manatee viewing. Three Sisters Springs draws its largest manatee gatherings during manatee season, November 15 to March 31, and private RV parks in Crystal River, Homosassa, and Inverness fill quickly with snowbirds during those months. Booking eight to twelve weeks ahead is common for winter weekends, and monthly stays should be secured earlier.
Spring is a shoulder season: warm days, lower humidity, and thinner crowds after the snowbird migration ends in April. It is a good window for paddling before summer thunderstorms build.
Summer brings heat, high humidity, and near-daily afternoon storms, along with the Atlantic hurricane season that peaks August through October. Sites are easier to find, but travelers should watch tropical forecasts and confirm cancellation policies. Fall cools off gradually, with October and November offering some of the most comfortable weather of the year.

How to book a campsite
Private parks near Citrus Hills, including Sandy Oaks RV Resort, Sun Retreats Crystal River, Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park, Crystal River KOA, and Stillwater Preserve RV Resort, take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Winter dates should be booked several months out; summer availability is usually open closer to arrival.
For Florida State Parks, reservations run through the official Florida State Parks reservation system. Florida residents may make campsite or cabin reservations up to 11 months in advance, and non-residents up to 10 months in advance. New sites are released daily at 8:00 a.m. Eastern Time, and popular sites are often booked within minutes.
Campsites not reserved or occupied may be rented to walk-in visitors on a first-come, first-served basis, which occasionally works midweek in the off-season.
What to expect on arrival
Most private RV parks in the area offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, concrete or gravel pads, and level sites suitable for larger rigs. Amenities vary: Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park and Crystal River KOA lean toward family and short-stay travelers with pools and rec areas, while Stillwater Preserve RV Resort and Sun Retreats Crystal River target longer stays with resort-style facilities.
Cell service and Wi-Fi are generally reliable along the US-19 corridor but can be spotty deeper in the Withlacoochee State Forest. Expect insects year-round; mosquitoes and no-see-ums are heaviest in summer and after rain.
Wildlife is part of the experience. Alligators inhabit most freshwater bodies, and manatees can appear in canals and river runs during winter. Keep pets leashed, secure food, and follow posted advisories at springs and boat ramps.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Citrus Hills, FL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Citrus Hills, FL?
Renting an RV in Citrus Hills is affordable compared to Florida's coastal hotspots. On RVezy, motorhome rentals near Citrus Hills generally range from about $175 to $250 per night, while travel trailers typically run about $100 to $150 per night, depending on size, age, and season. Many hosts offer weekly and monthly discounts, which is perfect for snowbirds and longer Nature Coast adventures. For a cheap RV rental in Citrus Hills, filter by price range, consider travel trailers over motorhomes, and look at midweek pickups when demand is lower. Pro tip: book shoulder-season trips in April or October to score lower nightly rates while still enjoying Crystal River's springs without summer humidity.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Citrus%20Hills%2C%20FloridaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Citrus Hills, Florida?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Citrus Hills. Florida does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or trailers, regardless of size. You must be at least 25 years old to be an approved driver on RVezy, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you are set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple it is, you can be on the road to Crystal River or Withlacoochee State Forest the same day you pick up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Citrus Hills protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every RV rental in Citrus Hills booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit US-41 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damages to the RV and provides financial backup during your trip. You choose your protection level during checkout, not the host, so you can pick the coverage that fits your trip, whether that is a quick weekend at Fort Cooper State Park or a two-week loop through the Nature Coast. Pro tip: if you are a first-time renter, the higher-tier plan is worth the extra few dollars per night for added comfort.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Citrus Hills RV trip?
You are not locked in. RVezy has a built-in cancellation policy that protects renters, including a full money-back grace period right after booking. Cancellation flexibility depends on how far out you cancel and certain conditions like natural disasters (Florida hurricane season runs June through November, so this matters). Because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, you get consistent treatment no matter which Citrus Hills listing you choose. Pro tip: book early for the peak January through March snowbird window, watch the National Hurricane Center for any named-storm activity in late summer, and reach out to RVezy support if a storm threatens your trip dates.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Citrus Hills?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rentals in Citrus Hills are easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) right in their listing rules. The Nature Coast is a dream for dogs: Fort Island Gulf Beach in Crystal River allows leashed pets on the sand, and the 46-mile paved Withlacoochee State Trail is perfect for long leashed walks under live oaks. Holder Mine Campground in the Withlacoochee State Forest is also pet-friendly with leash rules. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or breed/size limits, and pack a collapsible water bowl, Florida humidity is no joke for pups.
floridastateparks.org/learn/pets-florida-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Citrus Hills?
Yes, RV delivery in Citrus Hills is one of the best-kept secrets for stress-free travel. Many RVezy hosts will drop the RV right at your campsite at places like Holder Mine Campground, Sun Retreats Homosassa River, or Stillwater Preserve RV Resort, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. This is gold for first-timers who don't want to tow or back into a site. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy and check each host's delivery radius and fee (usually based on mileage from their home base). Pro tip: book delivery to Crystal River area parks so you can spend day one swimming with manatees instead of setting up camp.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/crystal-river-preserve-state-parkHow far can I drive on an RV rental in Citrus Hills, and what about mileage limits?
You've got plenty of range for a great Citrus Hills RV trip. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) and charge a small per-mile fee beyond that, while some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, just filter or check the listing details. From Citrus Hills, Tampa is about 75 miles south, Orlando is roughly 90 miles east, Gainesville is about 60 miles north, and the Florida Keys are a 350-mile southern road trip. For longer routes, message the host to negotiate a mileage bundle. Pro tip: map your full route before booking, hosts often discount mileage packages when you commit upfront.
fdot.gov/agencyresources/mapsWhere are the best campgrounds near Citrus Hills, FL?

All sit within 30 minutes of Citrus Hills. Pro tip: book Holder Mine through ReserveAmerica up to 11 months ahead for winter weekends, it fills fast.
fdacs.gov/Forests-Land/Our-Forests/Withlacoochee-State-ForestWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Citrus Hills?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Citrus Hills is November through April, when daytime highs sit in the 70s and overnight lows dip into the comfortable 50s, perfect for sleeping with the windows cracked. January and February bring the famous manatee migration to Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River, a bucket-list experience just 20 minutes from town. Summer (June through September) is hot and humid with highs near 90 and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but it's also Florida's scallop season in Homosassa, a unique reason to visit. Pro tip: shoulder months like October and May give you warm-water swimming, fewer crowds, and lower nightly rates on your motorhome rental in Citrus Hills.
weather.gov/tbw/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Citrus Hills?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV in Citrus Hills is genuinely beginner-friendly. The area is rural with wide two-lane highways like US-41 and SR-44, light traffic compared to Tampa or Orlando, and gentle terrain (no mountains, no city skyscrapers). Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, and the dump process, and you can text them anytime during your trip. If you're nervous about size, start with a Class B campervan rental in Citrus Hills or a 24-foot Class C motorhome. Pro tip: do a short practice loop around the Citrus Hills/Hernando area before heading to your campground, you'll feel like a pro within an hour.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/driving-safety/What if I have a breakdown or flat tire during my Citrus Hills RV trip?
You are covered. 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking through the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are on I-75, stuck on a backroad near Ozello, or parked at Fort Cooper State Park. Roadside support handles flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service. Your host is also a direct text away for quick questions about quirky switches or appliances. Save both numbers in your phone before you pull out of the driveway. Pro tip: Citrus County has good cell coverage on major roads but spotty service deep inside Withlacoochee State Forest, so download offline Google Maps before heading to remote campsites.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Citrus Hills RV rental on a longer road trip or out of state?
Yes, most RVezy hosts welcome road trips well beyond Citrus Hills, just confirm your route in the booking message. Travel within the continental U.S. is generally allowed, so an RV road trip from Citrus Hills to the Florida Keys (about 350 miles south), Savannah, Georgia (about 350 miles north), or even the Smoky Mountains (around 600 miles) is totally doable. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't apply south of the border. Canada travel may be possible with host approval. Pro tip: popular routes from Citrus Hills include the Gulf Coast drive south to Naples and the springs loop through Rainbow Springs, Silver Springs, and Ichetucknee.
visitflorida.com/things-to-do/road-trips/What kind of fuel mileage should I expect, and how much will gas cost?
Realistic expectations help your budget go further. Class A motorhomes typically get 7 to 10 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes around 10 to 14 mpg, Class B campervans 16 to 20 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg combined). Florida gas prices generally hover around the national average, with stations along US-41, SR-44, and the Suncoast Parkway being convenient stops near Citrus Hills. Diesel pumps are easy to find at Pilot and Love's on I-75 about 20 minutes east. Pro tip: fill up in Inverness or Lecanto before heading into Withlacoochee State Forest, prices climb at the smaller stations near campground entrances.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Citrus Hills?
Booking ahead pays off, especially for the best campgrounds near Citrus Hills. Florida state parks like Fort Cooper and Rainbow Springs open reservations 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and winter weekends (December through March) fill within days of opening. Withlacoochee State Forest campgrounds (Holder Mine, Mutual Mine, Hog Island) also use the 11-month ReserveAmerica window. Private parks like Stillwater Preserve and Sun Retreats Homosassa River are usually bookable 3 to 6 months ahead, with more flexibility midweek. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 11 months before your target date at 8:00 AM Eastern when state-park inventory drops, that's the snowbird trick for snagging waterfront sites.

Driving conditions around Citrus Hills are about as RV-friendly as Florida gets. The terrain is flat with gentle rolling hills, roads are mostly two-lane highways like SR-486, SR-44, and US-41, and there are no mountains, no toll-booth headaches, and minimal urban congestion. Watch for afternoon summer thunderstorms (June through September) that can drop heavy rain in 20 minutes, and slow down for occasional deer crossings near Withlacoochee State Forest at dusk. The Suncoast Parkway (SR-589) tolls south toward Tampa are easy with SunPass or pay-by-plate. Pro tip: avoid driving through Crystal River downtown on US-19 during weekend manatee-season mornings, take CR-495 as a quieter backroad alternative.

State forest campgrounds like Holder Mine have electric and water at the site plus a central dump station and bathhouse. Free dump stations are also available at the Citrus County Landfill in Lecanto and several Pilot/Flying J locations along I-75. Potable water fills are easy to find at any full-hookup park, and propane refills are available at Suburban Propane in Inverness. Pro tip: empty black tank first, then gray, this keeps your sewer hose cleaner and is a small habit that veteran RVers swear by.

Most rentals also have a TV, USB outlets, and seatbelts for every traveler. Many hosts include WiFi hotspots, generators, or solar for off-grid stays at Holder Mine. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps' count on RVezy to match your group exactly, oversized rigs cost more in fuel and parking complexity.

RVezy hosts in Citrus Hills offer some genuinely useful add-ons that make a family RV trip in Citrus Hills easier. Common extras include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots and dishes, bike racks, kayak racks (a must for Crystal River and the Rainbow River), generators, and outdoor grills. Pickup typically happens at the host's home in Citrus Hills, Hernando, or Lecanto, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Drop-off mirrors pickup, return clean and with the same fuel/propane levels to avoid fees. Mileage policies vary by listing and are shown clearly on each page. Pro tip: ask for the kayak rack add-on, the Rainbow and Chassahowitzka Rivers are unforgettable paddles.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/rainbow-springs-state-parkHow does payment work, and what should I expect for the security deposit?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay the full booking total to RVezy through the platform (not directly to the host), with a portion charged at booking and the balance before pickup. A security deposit is also placed as a hold on your card before the trip starts. The exact amount is shown on the listing and varies by RV value, typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars. As long as you return the RV clean, on time, undamaged, and at the right fuel level, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video walkaround at both pickup and drop-off in Citrus Hills, it is the easiest way to keep your deposit issue-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Citrus Hills?
Citrus Hills is perfectly positioned for a Florida RV road trip. Top runs include Crystal River and Three Sisters Springs (20 minutes, swim with manatees November through March), Rainbow Springs State Park near Dunnellon (30 minutes, crystal-clear tubing), Weeki Wachee Springs and the famous mermaid show (45 minutes south), St. Petersburg beaches (90 minutes southwest), and Walt Disney World in Orlando (about 90 minutes east). For a longer adventure, head to St. Augustine (about 150 miles northeast) or the Everglades (about 300 miles south). Pro tip: pair Rainbow Springs and Silver Springs in a single loop, both offer glass-bottom kayak views and they're only 25 miles apart through scenic Marion County backroads.
