Campgrounds and RV parks near East Lake, FL

The main draw is the coast. Honeymoon Island State Park has areas designated for swimming on the main beach, a pet beach on the south end, and shelling and walking on the north end. From there, the Caladesi Connection ferry departs from Honeymoon Island throughout the day, with the ride taking about 15 to 20 minutes to reach Caladesi's undeveloped beaches. On the mainland, the Pinellas Trail runs from Tarpon Springs south to St. Petersburg and is popular with cyclists staying at parks like Caladesi RV Park. Tarpon Springs' Greek sponge docks, downtown Dunedin, and Clearwater Marine Aquarium are all within a short drive. Lake Tarpon itself offers bass fishing and boat ramps, and Innisbrook Golf Resort sits close to the Clearwater / Lake Tarpon KOA Holiday.

The Tampa Bay area has a clear two-season climate: a hot and wet season from May through October, and a mild and dry season from November through April, with nearly two-thirds of annual precipitation falling in the months of June through September. Winter highs sit in the low seventies with cool nights, and cold snaps are brief. Peak RV season runs from January through March, when snowbirds fill private parks along the Gulf. Many resorts near East Lake sell out months ahead for that window, and Honeymoon Island parking lots reach capacity on weekends. Spring shoulder months, March through early May, offer warm days, lower rain totals, and easier site availability. Summer is hot, humid, and stormy, with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms. Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking mid-August through mid-October. Caladesi Island State Park is open for day-use visitors with ferry service resumed after Hurricane Helene, though overnight marina accommodations and some facilities remain limited. Always check park status before travel.

Camping around East Lake is suburban rather than wilderness. Private parks are the norm, with paved or gravel pads, full hookups, pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. The Clearwater / Lake Tarpon KOA is big-rig friendly with pull-through sites, full hookups including 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, and amenities such as a pool, laundry, playground, showers, and a store with propane and firewood. Expect traffic on US Highway 19 and Alt-19, especially in winter. Sites near the coast can feel tight, and mature trees mean satellite reception varies. Mosquitoes and no-see-ums are active in the warm months, particularly near mangroves and salt flats. Wildlife is close at hand: expect ospreys, gopher tortoises, armadillos, and dolphins offshore. Alligators occur in freshwater ponds and canals, so keep pets leashed and away from the water's edge.
