Camping near Fanning Springs, Florida
Fanning Springs sits on the lower Suwannee River in North Central Florida, about 40 miles west of Gainesville and 10 miles north of Chiefland on US Highway 19. The town is anchored by Fanning Springs State Park, which produces roughly 65 million gallons of 72-degree water each day. Once classified as a first-magnitude spring, flow has declined in recent decades and it is now considered a second-magnitude spring. The clear pool and short run into the Suwannee draw swimmers, snorkelers, divers, and paddlers year-round.
The state park does not offer drive-in RV camping. Overnight options inside the park are limited to two-bedroom cabins and a primitive group site reserved for hikers, cyclists, and paddlers arriving on the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail without a vehicle. RV travelers typically base at private and county campgrounds within a short drive.
Close-in options include Suwannee River Bend RV Park, Suwannee River Hideaway, and Otter Springs Resort Inc, a Gilchrist County park set on roughly 636 acres around a second-magnitude spring. Across the river in Dixie County, Old Town Campground and Old Town Campground N Retreat offer additional Suwannee-area basecamps.
Things to do around Fanning Springs
The spring run at Fanning Springs State Park is the main draw, with swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving in constant 72-degree water. A boardwalk crosses a cypress swamp to a Suwannee River overlook, and a short nature trail loops through hardwood and pine uplands past karst sinkholes. Manatees sometimes move into the spring run during colder months.
Paddlers launch from the park's canoe and kayak ramp on the Suwannee River, with Manatee Springs State Park a common downstream destination. The Nature Coast State Trail, a paved rail-trail spanning 31.5 miles between Chiefland, Cross City, and Trenton, includes a long span bridge over the Suwannee just east of the park.
Otter Springs, Manatee Springs, and the broader Suwannee River Wilderness Trail add further swimming, fishing, and paddling within a short drive.

March - May
81° / 55°F 80 mmDriest stretch of the year; bookings climb.
- summer
June - August
91° / 72°F 180 mmHot, humid, daily storms; peak swim crowds.

- winter
December - February
66° / 45°F 85 mmMild and drier; manatees may enter the spring run.
The spring itself holds a steady 72 degrees, so it is usable in every season, but the surrounding weather shapes the trip. Late spring through early fall is peak swim season, with hot, humid days, frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy visitor traffic at the state park on weekends and holidays. Summer is the wettest stretch and overlaps with Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks in August and September along the Gulf coast.
Fall cools noticeably after October and brings some of the most comfortable camping weather of the year, along with lower crowds. Winter is mild and relatively dry by Florida standards, with occasional cold fronts and freezing nights. Manatees often move into the Suwannee and its spring runs from roughly November through March in search of warm water.
Spring brings rising temperatures, longer daylight, and a rebound in bookings from snowbirds heading home and spring-break families arriving. High water on the Suwannee can occasionally trigger brown-out conditions that close swimming in the spring.

Our first time renting an RV and we didn’t know what to expect. Delivery of the RV was prompt and Big Jeff set everything up for us. Many of the items we brought were already there for use which was really great. I’m particular about our pillows and towels so we brought those along with our toiletries but everything else was there! Fantastic experience and great service with the delivery, setup and tear down. Would highly recommend.

Meet all our expectations. Will definitely use Big Jeff for future needs.

How to book campgrounds near Fanning Springs
Reservation rules vary by operator. Florida State Parks, which manages the Fanning Springs cabins and primitive group site, allows bookings up to 11 months in advance through the Florida State Parks reservation system or by phone. Cabins carry a two-night minimum, sleep up to six, and are not pet-friendly. The primitive site is available only to those arriving by foot, bicycle, or paddle.
Otter Springs Resort Inc, a Gilchrist County park, accepts reservations by contacting the park office directly, with more than 100 full-hookup sites plus tent areas and cabins. Private parks such as Suwannee River Bend RV Park, Suwannee River Hideaway, Old Town Campground, and Old Town Campground N Retreat handle bookings through their own offices and may allow longer stays for snowbirds.
For holiday weekends and the summer swim season, reserve well ahead. Winter snowbird months also fill early at monthly and seasonal parks.
What to expect on-site
Sites near Fanning Springs range from full-hookup RV pads at private and county parks to primitive tent areas and cabins. Otter Springs offers 30 and 50 amp full hookups, a covered indoor heated pool, a shower house, laundry, and a spring-fed swimming area. Roads and pads at Nature Coast campgrounds are often sand or crushed shell rather than paved.
Cell coverage in this rural stretch of Levy, Gilchrist, and Dixie counties can be spotty; on-site staff at Otter Springs have noted that service comes and goes across the property. Bring offline navigation and confirm gate hours if arriving after dark. Fanning Springs State Park asks late arrivals to call the park before 5 p.m. for the gate combination.
Do not bring outside firewood into state parks due to emerald ash borer restrictions; wood is sold on site. Pets are welcome on leash at most campsites but are excluded from state park cabins, cabin areas, and swimming areas.

weather.gov/jax/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great: first time renting an RV in Fanning Springs is genuinely one of the easier places to start. The roads around town (US-19, US-27A, SR-26) are flat, wide, and lightly trafficked compared to Florida's coastal highways. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, hookups, slide-outs, and the dump valve, and they stay reachable by message during your trip. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, book a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot practice at the Chiefland Walmart (10 miles south) before heading to your campsite, it's a stress-free way to get comfortable with mirrors and turns.
flhsmv.gov/safety-center/What happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own: every RV rental in Fanning Springs through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance with the renter protection plan. Whether it's a flat tire near the Nature Coast Trail, a dead battery at Manatee Springs, or a tow needed back from Cedar Key, one phone call gets help dispatched. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip for anything non-mechanical. Your host is just a message away too, they know their rig best and can usually troubleshoot small issues remotely. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pickup so it's ready the moment you need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Fanning Springs RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, road trips are encouraged: most hosts welcome interstate travel, so an RV road trip from Fanning Springs into Georgia (Okefenokee Swamp is about 110 miles north), South Carolina, or up the Atlantic coast is very doable. Always confirm cross-state travel with your host before booking so it's noted on the reservation. Cross-border travel into Canada may be permitted by some hosts, but you'll need explicit written approval through RVezy and your host first. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: a popular 7-day loop is Fanning Springs to St. Augustine to Savannah and back, scenic, manageable mileage, and easy driving.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is straightforward: expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class C motorhome rental Fanning Springs travelers commonly choose, 7 to 9 MPG for a Class A, and 12 to 18 MPG for the tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Most local RVs run on regular unleaded; only a few Class A diesels need diesel fuel. Florida gas prices typically sit near the national average, and the closest stations to Fanning Springs State Park are in Fanning Springs proper and Chiefland (10 miles south) on US-19. Pro tip: fill up in Chiefland rather than the smaller stations along SR-26, prices are usually a few cents cheaper at the larger Chiefland Murphy and RaceTrac.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Fanning Springs?
The earlier the better: Florida State Parks open reservations 11 months in advance through the official reserve system, and popular spots like Manatee Springs and Otter Springs fill fast, especially for weekends from November through April. For an RV rental Fanning Springs FL trip in peak winter, aim to book your campsite 6 to 11 months out, and your RV at least 6 to 8 weeks out. Mid-week summer trips are much easier and can often be booked just a week or two ahead. Pro tip: set a reminder for exactly 11 months before your target arrival date, sites are released at 8 a.m. ET and the best riverfront ones go within minutes.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are the driving conditions like around Fanning Springs?
You'll find easy, low-stress driving: Fanning Springs sits at the quiet junction of US-19 and SR-26, with flat terrain, two-lane highways, and almost no city traffic. The biggest things to watch are the Suwannee River bridge on US-19 (narrow shoulders, take it slow in a wider rig), occasional deer at dawn/dusk on SR-26, and summer afternoon thunderstorms that can roll in fast off the Gulf. Hurricane season (June through November) is worth monitoring, but the area is inland enough to mostly see wind and rain rather than storm surge. Pro tip: avoid driving I-75 around Gainesville between 4 and 6 p.m. on weekdays, take SR-26 west out of town instead for a calmer route to the springs.
fl511.com/What hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Fanning Springs offer?
You'll be well taken care of: most RV parks near Fanning Springs offer 30/50-amp electric, potable water, and a dump station, with many providing full hookups including sewer. Manatee Springs State Park has 80+ sites with water and electric plus a centralized dump station. Otter Springs has full hookups and Wi-Fi. For dumping and freshwater fills on the road, Chiefland Walmart and Suwannee River Hideaway both offer paid dump stations. Cell service is solid on Verizon and AT&T throughout town but spottier deep in the state parks. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before entering Fanning Springs State Park since the spring run area has limited RV-friendly water access.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/manatee-springs-state-parkWhat's inside a typical Fanning Springs RV rental?
You'll have everything you need to feel at home: a typical motorhome rental Fanning Springs guests book includes a queen or king bed, dinette and/or bunk beds (sleeps 4 to 8), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, and a bathroom with toilet and shower. Most rigs include air conditioning (essential for Florida summers), heat, a TV, and many have Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, and a generator for off-grid time at the primitive Suwannee River paddler sites. Seatbelts are provided for the number of passengers each RV is rated to carry. Pro tip: a campervan rental Fanning Springs travelers love is a Class B for couples, easier to park at the small spring lots and excellent fuel economy.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
You can customize the trip easily: RVezy hosts in the Fanning Springs area commonly offer add-ons like bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, generators, bike racks, and even kayaks or paddleboards, perfect for the Suwannee River. Pickup is usually at the host's location in or around Chiefland, Trenton, Bell, or Gainesville, with delivery available for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, so check each listing's daily allowance and overage rate. Pro tip: add the kayak package if your host offers it, the launch inside Fanning Springs State Park puts you right on one of Florida's clearest spring runs within minutes of pushing off.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/fanning-springs-state-park/experiences-amenitiesHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: when you book your RV rental Fanning Springs FL trip on RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card and your money stays protected until your trip begins. A refundable security deposit is held separately before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig). As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the agreed fuel level and within the mileage allowance, the deposit is released back to you after the trip. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a quick video walkaround at pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to avoid disputes and get your deposit back fast.
