Campgrounds and RV parks near Hernando, FL

The Withlacoochee State Trail is the main draw for cyclists, walkers, and equestrians. It runs through small towns, ranches, and six distinct natural communities between Citrus Springs and Dade City, with a Hernando trailhead near the midpoint and generally flat terrain suitable for all skill levels. An unpaved equestrian trail parallels portions of the paved route. Day trips from Hernando include Fort Cooper State Park in Inverness for swimming, hiking, and picnicking; Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park for viewing manatees, alligators, and native Florida wildlife; and Crystal River for snorkeling and paddling in the spring-fed Kings Bay. The unpaved trails of the Croom Tract in Withlacoochee State Forest offer mountain biking, horseback riding, and off-highway vehicle access. Inverness, about ten miles south, has restaurants, groceries, and a historic downtown along the trail.

The prime RV season in Citrus County runs from late fall through early spring. Winter and early spring bring mild days, low humidity, and the year's driest weather, and this is when snowbird demand pushes private parks to capacity. Sites at both private resorts and Holder Mine Campground can fill weeks or months in advance for January through March stays. Late spring is a shoulder period with warmer days but still-manageable humidity. Wildflowers bloom along the Withlacoochee State Trail, and manatee viewing at Homosassa and Crystal River tapers off as water temperatures rise. Summer is hot and wet: afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily, and August is the wettest month with heavy rainfall spread across many days. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity between mid-August and mid-October and a statistical peak around September 10. RV travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center forecasts and be prepared for evacuation orders during named storms. Cooler, drier conditions return by mid-November.

Terrain around Hernando is flat and sandy, with sites shaded by live oak, pine, and palmetto. Private RV resorts generally offer full hookups, paved or gravel pads, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Cell coverage is reliable on major carriers throughout the community and along the Withlacoochee State Trail. Holder Mine and other state-forest campgrounds provide electric and water hookups, a bathhouse with restrooms and showers, and a dump station, but sites are more rustic and hunting is permitted in the surrounding wildlife management area during scheduled seasons. Confirm dates before booking if hunt activity is a concern. Expect mosquitoes and biting flies from late spring through fall, and bring sun protection year-round. Wildlife in the area includes white-tailed deer, wild turkey, gopher tortoise, and the occasional black bear, so store food and trash securely.
