Camping near Homosassa, Florida
Homosassa sits on Florida's Nature Coast in Citrus County, roughly 75 miles north of Tampa on the spring-fed Homosassa River. The town is best known for manatees, bay scalloping, and inshore fishing on the shallow Gulf flats. It draws a mix of winter snowbirds, families on school-break trips, and anglers targeting redfish, trout, and tarpon.
RV parks cluster along the river and its tributaries within a few minutes of US-19 and the state park. Sun Retreats Homosassa River, Homosassa River RV Park, Nature's Resort Campground, and Camp N Water Outdoor Resort all sit on or near the water, with boat ramps or slips useful for scallop and fishing trips. Covered Wagon Campground is slightly inland and works well for travelers focused on the state park and day trips to Crystal River.
The area is flat and low-elevation, so most sites are full-hookup pull-through or back-in gravel pads. Shade varies: expect live oaks and palms rather than dense forest.
Things to do near Homosassa
The anchor attraction is Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Visitors reach the wildlife area by tram or the paved Pepper Creek Trail, then walk elevated boardwalks past manatees, alligators, red wolves, black bears, and Florida panthers. Daily manatee programs run at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. beside the Fish Bowl underwater observatory.
On the water, the Homosassa and Chassahowitzka rivers offer kayaking, paddleboarding, and guided fishing for redfish, spotted seatrout, snook, and tarpon. Bay scalloping is the summer draw, with snorkelers harvesting scallops from shallow grass flats out toward St. Martin's Keys.
Day trips are easy: Crystal River and its in-water manatee tours sit about twenty minutes north, and Weeki Wachee Springs is a short drive south.

Winter is peak season for RV travel here. From roughly mid-November through March, cool Gulf water pushes manatees into the constant 72-degree spring, and daytime highs sit near 70 with low humidity. Snowbird demand is heaviest January through March, and monthly and seasonal sites at the riverfront parks often fill months ahead.
Spring brings warm, dry weather and lighter crowds after Easter. It is a strong window for fishing, birding along the Great Florida Birding Trail, and paddling before summer thunderstorms build. Cobia migrate through in April and May.
Summer is hot, humid, and wet, with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms and heat indices routinely above 95. It is also scalloping season: recreational bay scallop harvest in Citrus and Hernando counties runs July 1 through September 24, and boat ramps get busy at sunrise. Fall carries lingering hurricane risk through November, but late October and November are usually mild, dry, and quiet.

How to book an RV site near Homosassa
Most campgrounds near Homosassa are privately owned and take reservations directly through their websites or by phone. Sun Retreats Homosassa River, Homosassa River RV Park, Nature's Resort Campground, Camp N Water Outdoor Resort, and Covered Wagon Campground all handle their own bookings and set their own cancellation windows, so confirm policies before paying deposits.
Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is a day-use park and does not offer camping. For state-park camping in the region, use the Florida State Parks reservation system at Reserve.FloridaStateParks.org; Florida residents can book up to 11 months out and non-residents up to 10 months out. Nearby options include Rainbow Springs and Manatee Springs state parks.
For winter stays at private parks, book several months out; snowbird sites often go by summer. Scalloping-season weekends in July and August also sell out early. Shoulder seasons in late spring and late fall are the easiest to book on shorter notice.
What to expect on the ground
Roads into most riverfront parks are narrow, with tight turns through old fishing-village neighborhoods. Big Class A rigs and long fifth wheels can navigate them, but arrive in daylight and call ahead about site length and clearance. Full hookups, laundry, and boat access are standard at the larger parks; some also offer boat slips, kayak launches, and fish-cleaning stations.
Expect mosquitoes, no-see-ums, and humidity from late spring through early fall. Bring screens, repellent, and a plan for afternoon shade. Alligators live in the rivers and canals, so keep pets leashed and away from the water's edge.
Cell service is generally reliable on the major national networks. Grocery stores, propane, marine supply, and urgent care are all within a short drive along US-19 in Homosassa and nearby Crystal River.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Homosassa, FL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Homosassa, FL?
RV rental in Homosassa is affordable for a Gulf Coast destination, with most listings on RVezy ranging from about $90 to $250 per night depending on RV size and season. Travel trailers and pop-ups are typically the most budget-friendly options, Class C motorhomes sit in the middle, and larger Class A rigs land at the top. You can often save by booking mid-week trips in late spring (April to May) or early fall (September) when demand softens after manatee season. Many Homosassa hosts also offer weekly discounts, so even a 5-night stay can lower your nightly rate. Message a host directly through the listing if your dates are flexible and you want to confirm the best deal for your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Homosassa%2C%20FloridaWhat do I need to rent an RV in Homosassa, Florida?
Renting an RV in Homosassa is easier than most first-timers expect. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and no commercial driver's license or special RV endorsement is required in Florida, even for larger Class A motorhomes. International travelers visiting the Nature Coast should bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from their home country to pair with their license. RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during booking, so there is no extra paperwork to chase down at pickup. Once you are approved, you can focus on planning manatee tours, scalloping trips, and stops along the Homosassa River.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Homosassa protected if something goes wrong?
Every RV rental on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Suncoast Parkway with confidence. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real peace of mind without filing personal insurance claims. During checkout you choose from different protection tiers based on the coverage level you want, and that choice is yours as the guest. Whether you are parking at Nature's Resort on Halls River or camping near Chassahowitzka, you are covered. It is the kind of safety net that makes a first Homosassa RV trip feel a lot less intimidating.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Homosassa RV rental?
You can book your Homosassa RV trip with confidence because RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform, not individual hosts. That means consistent, fair rules for every booking, including a grace period right after you book in case plans suddenly change. The exact refund terms depend on how far in advance you cancel and the circumstances, and they are clearly explained on the RVezy website before you confirm. If a host needs to cancel, RVezy helps guests with a refund or rebooking credit. Booking earlier in the year for winter manatee season also gives you the longest runway to adjust your plans if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Homosassa RV trip?
Yes, many Homosassa hosts welcome dogs, and the Nature Coast is one of Florida's most pet-friendly corners. When searching RVezy, turn on the Pet-Friendly filter to see every pet-friendly RV rental in Homosassa instantly. Once you arrive, your dog can join you at the leashed-pet areas of Fort Island Gulf Beach in Crystal River (about a 25-minute drive), the boardwalks near the Three Sisters Springs viewing area, and many patios along Old Homosassa's seafood row. Local campgrounds such as Nature's Resort also allow leashed pets. Confirm any pet fee with your host through messaging before booking so there are no surprises on arrival day.
floridastateparks.org/learn/pets-florida-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Homosassa?
Yes, RV delivery in Homosassa is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather skip the driving altogether. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome or travel trailer directly to campgrounds like Nature's Resort, Chassahowitzka River Campground, or Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park, then handle the full setup including leveling, slide-outs, and hookups. They also walk you through how everything works before they leave, so you are not stuck figuring out the propane stove on your own. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts offering this service, then message them with your campground and dates. It is the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Homosassa without ever getting behind the wheel.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Homosassa%2C%20FloridaHow far can I drive on a Homosassa RV trip, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have serious range from Homosassa, and RV rental with unlimited mileage is available from select hosts on RVezy. Most hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often around 100 to 150 free miles per day) with reasonable per-mile fees beyond that, while others offer flat unlimited mileage packages that are great for a longer Florida road trip. From Homosassa you can reach Crystal River in about 20 minutes, Weeki Wachee Springs in around 45 minutes, Tampa in roughly 90 minutes, and Orlando in about 2 hours. Filter listings by mileage policy or message hosts directly to confirm the best fit for your route. The longer your trip, the more unlimited mileage tends to pay off.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Homosassa%2C%20FloridaWhat are the best campgrounds near Homosassa for an RV rental?
Homosassa has a strong mix of campgrounds, so picking one comes down to the vibe you want. Nature's Resort on Halls River Road is the big-amenity option with a marina, pool, and direct access to the Homosassa River, ideal for boaters and scallopers. Chassahowitzka River Campground, a Citrus County park about 15 minutes south, is a favorite for kayakers heading to Chassahowitzka Springs. Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park in nearby Crystal River offers full-hookup sites in a quiet, wooded setting. For state-park camping, Rainbow Springs State Park in Dunnellon is within easy reach. Book 2 to 3 months ahead for January through March manatee season since the best campgrounds near Homosassa fill up quickly in winter.
citrusbocc.com/departments/parks_and_recreation/index.phpWhen is the best time to visit Homosassa in an RV?
Homosassa is enjoyable year-round, but winter wins for most visitors. From mid-November through March, daytime highs typically sit in the low 70s, humidity drops, and hundreds of manatees gather in the 72-degree spring, making it the peak window for an RV camping trip in Homosassa. April and May offer warm-but-comfortable weather in the low 80s. Summer (June through September) is hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but it is also Florida's bay scallop season (typically July through late September), which is a bucket-list experience. Fall falls within hurricane season, so monitor forecasts, but October often delivers quiet camping conditions and shoulder-season discounts.
weather.gov/tbw/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I actually know what I'm doing in Homosassa?
Yes, and you are in good company because many RVezy guests in Homosassa are first-timers. Every host provides a full walkthrough at pickup (or at your campground if you choose delivery) covering leveling jacks, slide-outs, the water pump, propane, generator, and dump procedures. You will have their phone number throughout the trip, plus RVezy's 24/7 support and roadside assistance for any issues that come up. Driving around Homosassa itself is forgiving since US-19 is wide and straight and the back roads to Halls River or Chassahowitzka are low-traffic. Ask your host for a quick photo or video walkthrough before pickup day so you can review it at the campsite. Confidence builds fast on a first Homosassa RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I break down or have a problem during my Homosassa RV trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on US-19, a dead battery at Fort Island Gulf Beach, or a hookup issue at Chassahowitzka River Campground is one quick call away from help. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for RV-specific questions like resetting the inverter or finding the spare propane tank. RVezy's customer support team backs you up before, during, and after your trip. Citrus County also has RV service shops in Crystal River and Inverness if anything needs hands-on attention, so help is genuinely close by.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Homosassa RV rental on a multi-state road trip?
Yes, an RV road trip from Homosassa opens up the entire Southeast. Most hosts allow travel throughout Florida and into neighboring states like Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas. Confirm your route in your booking message so hosts can plan mileage and confirm insurance coverage. Popular routes include Homosassa to the Florida Keys (about 380 miles), Homosassa to St. Augustine and the Atlantic coast (about 150 miles), and Homosassa up to the Smoky Mountains (about 600 miles). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Hosts offering unlimited mileage are especially valuable for longer hauls, so filter for them when planning a multi-state loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Homosassa RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable in your trip budget, but Homosassa is friendlier on the wallet than you might expect. Florida gas prices typically run close to or just below the national average, and Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and larger Class A rigs 6 to 9 MPG. A typical week of local exploring (Homosassa, Crystal River, Weeki Wachee, Tampa) covers about 300 miles, so a Class C would burn roughly 30 gallons. Fill up at larger stations along US-19 in Homosassa or Crystal River where it is easy to pull in a 30-foot rig. Avoid the smaller stations on Halls River Road where access is tight.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Homosassa?
For manatee season (November through March), book your Homosassa campground 2 to 3 months ahead since weekends at Nature's Resort and other popular parks often sell out by October. Florida State Park campgrounds use ReserveAmerica through FloridaStateParks.org and open reservations 11 months in advance, which is the secret weapon for snagging waterfront sites. County-run Chassahowitzka River Campground books through Citrus County's reservation portal. Summer and shoulder seasons are much easier, and a site is often available a week or two out. If your top campground is full, message an RVezy host that offers delivery since they can often set you up on private land or at a smaller park that does not appear on the big booking sites.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reserve-campsiteWhat are the driving conditions like around Homosassa?
Driving an RV around Homosassa is refreshingly easy compared to bigger Florida metros. US-19 (Suncoast Boulevard) runs right through town with wide lanes, generous shoulders, and plenty of RV-friendly turn-offs, and it is the main artery for nearly every trip you will take. The Suncoast Parkway (Toll 589) connects Homosassa to the Tampa area in about 90 minutes with smooth, straight driving. Watch for sudden afternoon thunderstorms June through September and pull off and wait them out since visibility can drop quickly. Halls River Road and the side streets of Old Homosassa are narrow with overhanging oaks, so larger Class A rigs should stick to main routes or use delivery. Try to avoid I-275 and I-75 through Tampa during weekday rush hours.
fdot.gov/Where can I dump waste and fill fresh water near Homosassa?
You have plenty of options for dumps and fills, which makes RV camping near Homosassa stress-free. Most full-hookup sites at Nature's Resort and Rock Crusher Canyon RV Park include sewer and water right at your site, so no separate dump trip is needed. If you are at a partial-hookup or boondocking spot, Chassahowitzka River Campground has a public dump station, and many Flying J and Pilot truck stops along I-75 (about 30 minutes east near Ocala) offer dump services for a small fee. Freshwater fills are available at most campground entrances and select RV-friendly gas stations. Ask your host where they typically dump since locals know the easiest spots and can save you a wrong turn with a full tank.
citrusbocc.com/departments/parks_and_recreation/index.phpWhat's included inside a typical Homosassa RV rental?
Most Homosassa RV rentals come fully equipped so you can roll in and start enjoying the Nature Coast. Expect a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and basic cookware; a bathroom with toilet and shower; comfortable beds with linens (often offered as an add-on); a dinette, air conditioning (essential here), and a furnace. Many campervans and motorhomes also include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, outdoor chairs, and a propane grill. Seatbelts are installed at the legal passenger seats so the whole family can ride safely. Generators are common on Class A and Class C motorhomes for off-grid power, which is great if you are scalloping all day and want AC at lunch. Each listing spells out exactly what is included, so review the amenities list before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Homosassa%2C%20FloridaWhat add-ons can I get with my Homosassa motorhome rental?
Hosts on RVezy offer useful add-ons that make a motorhome rental in Homosassa feel like a turnkey trip. Common options include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits with full cookware, bikes or kayaks (perfect for paddling Homosassa Springs or Chassahowitzka), generators, portable fire pits, outdoor grills, and even fishing gear for the river. Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's home address in the Homosassa, Crystal River, or Lecanto area, or you can pay for delivery to your campground. Mileage policies range from a daily cap with per-mile fees to fully unlimited. Bundling delivery, setup, and a kayak add-on for a stay at Nature's Resort essentially eliminates every logistics headache from your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Homosassa%2C%20FloridaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, with no cash, checks, or off-platform payment requests (a great fraud safeguard). You pay your rental total at booking using a credit or debit card. A separate security deposit hold is placed on your card before pickup, and the amount is shown clearly on the listing before you confirm. As long as you return the RV in the condition you received it, with the tanks handled per the host's instructions, the deposit is released back to you after the trip. Take date-stamped photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at both pickup and dropoff to easily avoid any deposit disputes on your Homosassa RV trip.
