Campgrounds near Homosassa Springs
Homosassa Springs sits on Florida's Nature Coast in Citrus County, about an hour and a half north of Tampa. The town is built around the Homosassa River and the spring-fed headwaters at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, a first-magnitude spring known year-round for its resident West Indian manatees. RV travelers use the town as a base for spring swims, saltwater fishing on the Gulf, and scalloping trips in summer.
RV parks cluster along the river and off US-19. Stillwater Preserve RV Resort and Covered Wagon Campground sit inland with full-hookup pull-throughs suited to bigger rigs, while Homosassa River RV Park, Sun Retreats Homosassa River, and Nature's Resort Campground put boat ramps, docks, and river access within walking distance of most sites.
Crystal River, Chassahowitzka, and Weeki Wachee are all within a short drive, so a single basecamp covers several springs and paddling runs.
Things to do in Homosassa Springs
The main draw is the water. Boat ramps at Homosassa River RV Park, Sun Retreats Homosassa River, and Nature's Resort Campground put renters on the river within minutes, with easy runs down to the Gulf for redfish, trout, and grouper. Kayak and pontoon rentals are available on the river and at nearby Crystal River for manatee tours in winter and scalloping in summer.
On land, Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park offers a floating observatory over the main spring, plus alligators, red wolves, and Florida panthers. The Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins and the Old Homosassa fishing village are within a few minutes of town. Stillwater Preserve RV Resort and Covered Wagon Campground provide quieter inland bases with pools and pet areas for downtime between outings.

The high season for RV travel runs November through April, when humidity drops, mosquitoes thin out, and daytime highs sit in the sixties and seventies. This is also manatee season: hundreds of animals move into the warm springs at Homosassa and nearby Crystal River from November through March, with the largest gatherings between December and February, and viewing conditions at the state park are at their best.
Late spring is warm and drier, and May is typically the sunniest month of the year. Bay scallop season on Florida's Nature Coast opens July 1 and runs through September 24 in Citrus and Hernando counties, and river campgrounds fill quickly on scallop weekends. Summer afternoons bring near-daily thunderstorms and heat-index values well over one hundred.
Hurricane season officially runs June through November, with peak activity from August into October. Some riverfront sites have flooded in past storm surges, so travelers in that window should watch NHC advisories and confirm access with the park before arrival.

How to book in Homosassa Springs
Private RV parks around Homosassa Springs, including Stillwater Preserve RV Resort, Homosassa River RV Park, Sun Retreats Homosassa River, Nature's Resort Campground, and Covered Wagon Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Winter snowbird sites are commonly booked months, and sometimes a full season, in advance.
Florida State Parks in the region, such as Rainbow Springs and Fort Cooper, use the state reservation system at reserve.floridastateparks.org. Florida residents can book up to 11 months in advance, while non-residents are limited to 10 months. Federal sites on the nearby Chassahowitzka and Crystal River national wildlife refuges do not offer RV camping, so plan overnights at a private park or state park nearby.
What to expect in Homosassa Springs
Most parks on the Homosassa River are older, tree-shaded properties with tight interior roads. Big rigs fit best at Stillwater Preserve RV Resort and Covered Wagon Campground, which are set up with wider pads and pull-throughs. Riverfront parks such as Homosassa River RV Park, Sun Retreats Homosassa River, and Nature's Resort Campground trade some maneuvering room for direct water access, docks, and boat ramps.
Full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are standard at these parks. Cell coverage is generally reliable along US-19 but can weaken along the river and in the surrounding wetlands. Expect mosquitoes and no-see-ums from late spring through fall, and bring bug spray, screen repair tape, and a plan for securing food and trash against raccoons.

visitflorida.com/places-to-go/central/citrus-county/Do I need a special license to rent an RV in Homosassa Springs?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Florida. The state's standard Class E license covers any non-commercial recreational vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating under 26,001 pounds, which includes nearly every motorhome and travel trailer on RVezy. No CDL or special endorsement required. RVezy approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and your ID is verified right inside the booking flow. Visiting from another country? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit. Most renters in Homosassa are surprised how quick the approval process is, often same-day.

At checkout, you choose the coverage level that fits your trip, whether you want lower out-of-pocket exposure or a leaner package to keep costs down. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Homosassa Springs RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets a standard cancellation policy that applies across every listing, so the terms are consistent no matter which host you book with. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your pickup date. If a hurricane or tropical storm threatens your Florida Gulf Coast trip, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options. If your host cancels, RVezy refunds you or offers travel credit. That safety net is one reason first-time renters feel comfortable planning an RV camping trip in Homosassa Springs months in advance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Homosassa Springs RV rental?
Yes, a pet-friendly RV rental in Homosassa Springs is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search. Many hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats), though a small cleaning fee may apply. Your pup will love this area: the Pepper Creek Trail near Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is a short paved path perfect for leashed walks, and nearby RV parks like Nature's Resort offer pet-friendly amenities. Bring a leash, current vaccination records, and plenty of water (Florida heat is no joke). Pro tip: pets are not allowed inside the wildlife park exhibits, so plan a shaded RV break during your visit.
floridastateparks.org/learn/pets-florida-state-parksCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Homosassa Springs?
Yes, RV delivery in Homosassa Springs is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers. Many local hosts will deliver the RV directly to your campsite at Nature's Resort, Sun Retreats Crystal River, or Chassahowitzka River Campground, then handle the full setup, hookups, slide-outs, and a walkthrough of everything inside. You skip the stress of driving a big rig down US-19 or navigating narrow campground roads. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's home base. Filter by Delivery when you search, message the host to confirm your campground, and your RV is waiting for you when you arrive.
floridastateparks.org/How far can I drive on a Homosassa Springs RV trip?
You've got serious range from Homosassa Springs. Most RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage on weekly bookings, just filter for it. From here, you're 80 miles north of Tampa, 90 miles west of Orlando, 130 miles to St. Petersburg beaches, and about 175 miles to the Cedar Key Gulf villages and beyond to Gainesville. A weeklong RV road trip from Homosassa Springs easily covers the Big Bend coast, Ocala National Forest, and the Crystal River springs without burning through your mileage allowance. Extra miles typically run $0.30 to $0.45 each, so just sketch your route in advance and pick a package that fits.
fdot.gov/agencyresources/mapsWhere are the best campgrounds near Homosassa Springs?
You have great options for the best campgrounds near Homosassa Springs. Top picks include Nature's Resort, on the Homosassa River with a marina, pool, and easy access to manatee tours; Sun Retreats Crystal River, a large full-hookup resort about 10 miles north; Chassahowitzka River Campground, a Citrus County park south of town with waterfront sites and kayak launches; and the Withlacoochee State Forest campgrounds about 30 minutes inland for a quieter, woodsy stay. Book 2 to 3 months ahead for winter manatee season, and confirm with your host that the RV's length and slide-outs fit your chosen site.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/ellie-schiller-homosassa-springs-wildlife-state-parkWhen is the best time to plan a Homosassa Springs RV trip?
November through March is the sweet spot. This is peak manatee season at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, when hundreds of manatees gather in the 72-degree springs to escape cooler Gulf waters. Daytime temperatures sit in the 65 to 78 degree range, humidity is low, and mosquitoes are minimal, perfect RV weather. April and May are also lovely (70s to mid-80s) and far less crowded. Summer (June through September) brings 90-degree heat, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and hurricane-season watchfulness, but waters are warm for scalloping and kayaking. For the classic Homosassa Springs RV trip with manatees, snowbird-quiet mornings, and zero bug spray, book a January or February week early.
weather.gov/tbw/I've never rented an RV before. How does it work in Homosassa Springs?
First time renting an RV? You're going to love how easy RVezy makes it. After you book, your host gives you a full hands-on orientation at pickup: how to run the propane stove, dump the tanks, level the rig, extend the awning, and connect to shore power. They'll share their cell number for trip-long questions. Plenty of Homosassa hosts also offer delivery and setup at your campground, so you never even drive the RV. Start with a smaller Class C motorhome or a campervan rental in Homosassa Springs if you're nervous about size, US-19 has wide lanes and the area's flat terrain is very beginner-friendly. Most first-timers say it's easier than they expected.
fmcsa.dot.gov/protect-your-move/rv-safetyWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never alone out there. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns. Whether you are on US-19, the Suncoast Parkway, or a quiet road near the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge, help is one call away. Your host is also a direct lifeline for quick questions like why the water pump is beeping, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center. Pro tip: save the roadside number to your phone at pickup, and snap a photo of the RV VIN and license plate for faster service.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV across state lines or to Canada from Homosassa Springs?
Absolutely, interstate road trips are encouraged. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental US, so you can head north to Georgia's Okefenokee Swamp (4 hours), the Smoky Mountains (8 hours), or even up the East Coast. Cross-border travel into Canada is sometimes allowed, just message the host first to confirm and verify insurance coverage applies. Important: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage stop at the border. Popular multi-state routes from Homosassa include the Florida Panhandle beaches, the Georgia coast via I-10, and a loop through the Florida Keys (about 7 hours south). Always coordinate longer trips with your host in advance.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel during my Homosassa Springs RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's manageable. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 miles per gallon, campervans (Class B) hit 14 to 18 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg). Florida gas prices typically run a few cents below the national average, and Citrus County stations along US-19 in Homosassa and Crystal River are reliably competitive. For a 4-day trip with 300 total miles, budget roughly $120 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Homosassa before heading south toward Tampa, where prices climb noticeably once you cross into Hernando and Pasco counties.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Homosassa Springs?
For winter (November through March), book 3 to 6 months ahead, that's peak manatee and snowbird season, and waterfront sites at Nature's Resort and Sun Retreats Crystal River disappear fast. Florida State Park campgrounds (like nearby Rainbow Springs and Manatee Springs) take reservations 11 months in advance through ReserveAmerica's Florida State Parks system, and the popular sites get snapped up the morning they open. Summer and shoulder season are much more relaxed, often 2 to 4 weeks is fine. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, set up calendar alerts on the Florida State Parks site for cancellations, you can score a riverfront spot 48 hours out more often than you'd think.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Homosassa Springs?
You're in luck: this area is one of Florida's easiest places to drive an RV. The terrain is pancake flat, US-19 (the main north-south route through Homosassa) is a divided four-lane highway with wide shoulders, and the Suncoast Parkway (toll road) offers a smooth, low-traffic shortcut to Tampa. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms in summer, they're brief but intense, so pull off if visibility drops. Hurricane season runs June through November; check the National Hurricane Center forecast before long trips. Avoid the narrow back roads in Old Homosassa with a large Class A, stick to US-19 and CR-490. Local insider tip: the Sunshine SunPass works on the Suncoast Parkway, ask your host if the RV has a transponder.
fdot.gov/traffic/trafficservicesweb.shtmWhat amenities can I expect at Homosassa Springs campgrounds?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for a smooth stay. Most full-service parks near Homosassa Springs (Nature's Resort, Sun Retreats Crystal River, Sweet Citrus Acres) offer 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer hookups, plus dump stations, potable water fills, laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi. State forest sites at Withlacoochee are more primitive (think water and electric only, no sewer). For dumping and water fills mid-trip, the Citrus County Landfill on County Road 491 has a public RV dump station, and many gas stations along US-19 cater to RVers. Pro tip: ask your host whether the RV has a built-in water filter, the area's well water can have a slight sulfur scent that's harmless but noticeable.
citrusbocc.com/departments/solid_waste_management/index.phpWhat features and amenities are inside a typical Homosassa Springs RV rental?
You will be impressed by what is packed inside. Most RVs on RVezy come fully equipped: a real bed (queens are standard), a kitchen with fridge, microwave, propane stove, sink and cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate-controlled AC and heat, a dinette, and seatbelts for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, and an outdoor awning, perfect for evenings overlooking the Homosassa River. Wi-Fi and generators are common add-ons (some hosts include them free, others charge a daily fee). Larger Class C and Class A motorhome rentals in Homosassa Springs often sleep 6 to 8 with bunk beds and convertible dinettes, ideal for a family RV trip in Homosassa Springs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Homosassa%20Springs%2C%20FloridaWhat add-ons and options can I include with my RV rental?
Hosts offer plenty of ways to customize. Common add-ons for a Homosassa Springs RV rental include linen and bedding packages ($25 to $50), kitchen kits, camp chairs and tables, bike racks, kayak racks (essential here, the Homosassa River is paddler's paradise), generators, propane refills, and grills. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Homosassa, Lecanto, or Crystal River, with most rentals running 24-hour to 48-hour minimums. Drop-off is at the same location, though delivery to Nature's Resort or another campground is widely available. Mileage policies are set by each host, typically 100 to 150 free miles per day. Pro tip: ask about a kayak add-on, paddling to the manatees from your campsite is the local highlight.
floridastateparks.org/things-to-do/paddlingHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, no cash, no checks, and no awkward handoffs with the host. You pay the rental total when you book, and a refundable security deposit is held separately on your card (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) shortly before pickup. As long as you return the RV in the same condition with the agreed fuel level and tanks handled per your host's instructions, the deposit is released back to you after the trip. To avoid deductions, take time-stamped photos of the RV at pickup and drop-off, follow your host's fuel and dump instructions, and report anything unusual right away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in Homosassa Springs outside campgrounds?
Good news: where to park an RV in Homosassa Springs isn't tricky. Beyond campgrounds, the Walmart Supercenter on South Suncoast Boulevard (US-19) is RV-friendly for one-night stays (call ahead to confirm), and Cracker Barrel locations along US-19 in Crystal River and Spring Hill permit overnight RV parking with management permission. For free dispersed camping, the Withlacoochee State Forest about 30 minutes east allows primitive RV camping with a permit. Avoid overnight parking in downtown Homosassa or at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park (day-use only). Local insider tip: Rogers Park on the Homosassa River has a free public boat ramp and day parking that's perfect for kayak launches, just not overnight.
