Interlachen sits in Putnam County in north-central Florida, roughly midway between Gainesville and Jacksonville, in a rural landscape of small lakes, pine flatwoods, and sandhills. The town is a practical base for RV travelers who want quiet lakeside camping without the coastal crowds, with several public and private campgrounds within a short drive. Options close to town range from full-service RV parks to state-managed reservoir camping and off-road recreation resorts. Cooper Lake RV Community and Hog Waller Campground and ATV Resort are among the closest private options, while Fort McCoy / Lake Oklawaha KOA Holiday sits southwest toward the Ocala National Forest. Rodman Campground is located approximately 9 miles southwest of Palatka along the Rodman Reservoir, and Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park lies north near Keystone Heights. Gold Head Branch State Park preserves rolling sandhills, marshes, ravines, lakes, and scrub on the north central ridge of Florida, with the park entrance about six miles north of Keystone Heights on State Road 21, giving the area a mix of freshwater lake, spring-fed ravine, and reservoir environments within an hour of Interlachen.

State-run sites use the Florida State Parks reservation system. For reservations at Rodman Campground, visit the Florida State Parks reservations website or call 800-326-3521, and the same system handles Mike Roess Gold Head Branch State Park. Florida residents may book up to 11 months in advance, while non-residents may book up to 10 months in advance, and winter weekends often sell out the day sites become available. Private parks such as Cooper Lake RV Community, Hog Waller Campground and ATV Resort, and Fort McCoy / Lake Oklawaha KOA Holiday take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. KOA properties also accept bookings through the KOA app and central reservation line. For state park stays, campers who plan to arrive after sunset should call the park on the day of arrival for gate instructions, and all campers must be set up before 11 p.m.
