Campgrounds and RV parks near Inverness Highlands South, FL

Cycling is the marquee activity. The Withlacoochee State Trail is a 46-mile paved rail-trail, one of the longest in Florida, and runs along the northeast edge of Inverness with easy access to downtown. Riders can pedal south toward Floral City and the Withlacoochee State Forest, or north toward Hernando and Citrus Springs, on flat, shaded terrain. Fort Cooper State Park adds hiking, paddling, and history along Lake Holathlikaha, with nearly 5 miles of self-guided trails and canoe and paddleboat rentals. Private watercraft are not permitted on the lake. A half-mile paved connector links parking lot #2 to the Withlacoochee State Trail. Day trips reach Crystal River, Homosassa Springs, Rainbow Springs, and the Gulf coast, all within about an hour by vehicle.

Peak RV season runs from late fall through early spring, when temperatures are mild and humidity is low. Snowbirds fill private parks along the Withlacoochee River from December through March, so long-stay sites at properties like Riverside Lodge RV Resort and Trails End RV Park should be booked months ahead. Spring brings warm days and heavier trail use. Fort Cooper Days, a re-enactment of the 1836 Second Seminole War skirmishes, is held each March at the state park. Wildflowers, birding, and spring-fed river paddling peak between March and May before summer heat arrives. Summer is hot, humid, and stormy. August is the wettest month, with around 248 mm of precipitation distributed over about 22 rainy days, and afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and can force state-forest campground closures under tropical storm or hurricane warnings. Fall cools gradually; November is drier and sunnier, with around 49 mm of rainfall over 6 rainy days, making it a strong shoulder-season window for RVers.

Terrain is flat, sandy, and heavily wooded with oak, pine, and cypress. Sites at private parks along the Withlacoochee River tend to be level with full hookups and suit larger rigs; state-forest sites are more rustic with basic facilities. At Mutual Mine, sites sit next to a man-made lake with potable water and a centrally located restroom, and fishing and hiking are on site. Fort Cooper is tent-only: there are no showers or electricity, portolets and potable water are available, and each site has a picnic table, grill, and fire ring. Expect wildlife including alligators, wading birds, and snakes near lakes and rivers. Cell service is generally reliable in and around Inverness but can drop inside the state forest tracts. Bring insect repellent from spring through fall.
