Camping near Leisure City, Florida

Leisure City sits in southern Miami-Dade County, minutes from the main Homestead entrance to Everglades National Park and close to the mainland gateway of Biscayne National Park. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want two national parks, the northern Florida Keys, and Miami all within a short drive. Options in the immediate area include private RV resorts such as The Boardwalk, Southern Comfort RV Resort, Miami Everglades RV Resort, and Goldcoaster RV Resort, all of which cater to full-size rigs with hookups. For campers who want to stay inside the national park, Long Pine Key - Everglades National Park sits within the pine rocklands about seven miles from the main park entrance near Homestead, offering non-hookup sites near the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center. The surrounding landscape is flat, subtropical, and dominated by sawgrass prairie, pine rockland, and mangrove coastline. Expect farm stands, tropical fruit groves, and quick access to US-1 heading south into the Keys.

Things to do near Leisure City

Everglades National Park is the main draw. From Long Pine Key - Everglades National Park, the Anhinga Trail, Pa-hay-okee Boardwalk, and Royal Palm area are all a short drive, and rangers run winter evening programs at the campground amphitheater. The main park road continues to the Flamingo area near the Guy Bradley Visitor Center, about 35 miles from the Long Pine Key Campground, where boat tours, kayak rentals, and wildlife viewing are based. Biscayne National Park, headquartered at the Dante Fascell Visitor Center in Homestead, is almost entirely water. Guided boat tours, snorkeling trips, and paddling excursions are booked through the park's institute at the visitor center. Other nearby stops include Shark Valley and its paved loop, the Homestead-Miami Speedway, tropical fruit stands such as Robert Is Here, and day trips into Key Largo and John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

When to visit Leisure City

spring
March - May
82° / 66°F 95 mm
Warming up; rains return in May; mosquitoes build.
summer
June - August
90° / 75°F 210 mm
Hot, humid; daily storms; Long Pine Key closed.
fall
September - November
84° / 72°F 165 mm
Hurricane peak in September; drier by November.
winter
December - February
77° / 61°F 50 mm
Dry season; peak RV bookings; mild and comfortable.

The dry season, roughly November through April, is the recommended window for RV travel. Temperatures are mild, humidity is lower, mosquitoes are far less aggressive, and wildlife concentrates around remaining water, which makes birding in the Everglades exceptional. This is also the busiest period, and private resorts fill with snowbirds on monthly stays. Late spring shifts quickly toward the wet season. From roughly May through October, expect hot, humid days, near-daily afternoon thunderstorms, standing water, and heavy mosquito pressure across the Everglades. Long Pine Key - Everglades National Park is open seasonally November through May and is one of two frontcountry camping options run by the Flamingo Adventures concession, while Flamingo remains the only campground in the park that is open year-round, with reduced services in summer. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August, September, and early October. RV travelers during those months should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories, keep an evacuation plan, and be aware that parks and private campgrounds can close on short notice for storms.

I recently had the pleasure of renting Mark and Cyndi's RV for a two-week vacation across Florida, and I cannot recommend them enough! The entire process, from the initial inquiry to returning the RV, was seamless, professional, and friendly. Here's what made my experience exceptional: Communication: Mark and Cyndi were prompt, clear, and informative in their communication. They made sure I knew everything I needed to before embarking on my adventure and were readily available to answer any questions I had during my trip. The RV: Their RV was in pristine condition and exceptionally clean. It was evident that they take great pride in maintaining their vehicle. Booking and reservations

Reservations for Long Pine Key and Flamingo are handled by Flamingo Adventures, the park's concessionaire, and can typically be made up to a year in advance through the online portal or by phone. A portion of sites is held for first-come, first-served campers, but in winter these can fill by early afternoon. The campground has flush restrooms with hot showers, potable water, and a dump station, but sites do not have electric, water, or sewer hookups. Private resorts near Leisure City, including The Boardwalk, Southern Comfort RV Resort, Miami Everglades RV Resort, and Goldcoaster RV Resort, book directly through their own websites and by phone. Winter demand is heavy, so reserve well ahead, particularly for stays of a week or longer. Biscayne National Park's island campgrounds are tent-only, boat-access, and first-come, first-served.

What to expect on the ground

Terrain is flat and easy to drive, with the Florida Turnpike and US-1 providing the main routes south to the Keys and west to the Everglades. Cell coverage is reliable in Leisure City and Homestead but drops off inside the national park. Grocery stores, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are all available in the Homestead-Florida City corridor. Everglades National Park charges a vehicle entrance fee that is valid for seven days, or visitors can use the America the Beautiful annual pass. Sites at Long Pine Key have flat, grassy terrain with some privacy between sites, though shade is limited. Pack insect repellent, sun protection, and freshwater. Alligators, wading birds, and the occasional crocodile near Flamingo are routine sightings, so keep food secured and follow park pet rules in developed areas.
