Campgrounds near North Merritt Island
North Merritt Island sits on Florida's Space Coast in Brevard County, wedged between the Indian River, the Banana River, and the Atlantic. It is the residential north end of Merritt Island, immediately south of the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Kennedy Space Center, and a short drive from Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, and Titusville. RV travelers use it as a base for rocket launch viewing, beach days, and wildlife trips.
Camping options in the area range from oceanfront port-run sites to full-service private resorts. Jetty Park Canaveral Port Auth sits inside Port Canaveral with beach and fishing pier access. The Great Outdoors RV-Nature and Golf Resort offers a large resort setting with an on-site golf course, while Sonrise Palms RV Park and Joy RV Park provide smaller, quieter stays inland. Whispering Pines rounds out the closer-in options.
There is no camping inside Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge itself, so RV travelers stay at nearby private and port-run parks and drive in for the day.
Things to do near North Merritt Island
Wildlife viewing is the headline draw. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge covers 140,000 acres of coastal dunes, saltwater marshes, freshwater impoundments, scrub, pine flatwoods, and hardwood hammocks, and provides habitat for more than 1,500 species of plants and animals. The one-way seven-mile Black Point Wildlife Drive is the most popular auto tour for spotting wading birds and alligators, and Bio Lab Road and additional dike roads add on-foot options.
A Refuge Pass is required to enter Black Point Wildlife Drive and Bio Lab Road, and to launch a boat at Bairs Cove, Beacon 42, and Bio Lab boat ramps. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is minutes away, Playalinda Beach at Canaveral National Seashore lies just north, and Port Canaveral offers cruise ship watching and a lighted fishing pier. Rocket launches are visible from many sites on clear days.

Winter and early spring are the prime RV seasons on the Space Coast. From roughly November through March, daytime highs are mild, humidity is lower, mosquitoes are more manageable, and wintering waterfowl and shorebirds fill the refuge impoundments. This is also peak season for snowbirds, so parks like Jetty Park Canaveral Port Auth and The Great Outdoors RV-Nature and Golf Resort fill many months in advance.
Late spring is a shoulder window. Temperatures climb, rainfall stays moderate, and launch schedules remain active. Summer, from June through August, brings hot, humid days, near-daily afternoon thunderstorms, and heavy mosquito and biting fly activity inside the refuge.
Early fall overlaps with the Atlantic hurricane peak in September and October, when tropical systems can force short-notice closures at coastal parks and beaches. October is the wettest month in the area. Booking becomes easier in late summer, and cooler, drier air returns by mid-November.

How to book campgrounds near North Merritt Island
Jetty Park Canaveral Port Auth is operated by the Canaveral Port Authority and booked through its CampLife reservation portal. The operator notes that the campground is extremely popular and booked many months in advance, and suggests reserving about a year out or targeting the slower July through September window. Check-in is strictly enforced at 2:00 PM for RV and tent sites and 3:00 PM for cabins.
The Great Outdoors RV-Nature and Golf Resort, Sonrise Palms RV Park, Joy RV Park, and Whispering Pines are private parks that book direct through their own websites or by phone. For refuge day-use, Merritt Island Annual, Daily, and Foot/Bicycle passes can be purchased online at Recreation.gov or in person at the Visitor Center.
What to expect on an RV trip here
The terrain is flat, sandy, and close to sea level, so driving and parking a rental RV is straightforward. Full hookups are common at the larger private parks, while Jetty Park Canaveral Port Auth mixes RV sites with tent areas and cabins next to the beach and fishing pier.
Expect strong sun, salt air, and biting insects, especially at dawn and dusk near the refuge and lagoons. Cell coverage is generally solid, but on-site Wi-Fi can be inconsistent at coastal parks. Rocket launch days bring extra traffic and altered park hours, so confirm road closures around Kennedy Space Center and Port Canaveral before travel days.
Inside the refuge, access is daylight only, and overnight camping is not permitted.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=North%20Merritt%20Island%2C%20FloridaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in North Merritt Island?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in North Merritt Island, Florida. The state does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally, no matter the size. You'll just need to be 25 or older, hold a valid driver's license, and verify your identity through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're ready to roll across the Max Brewer Causeway. flhsmv.gov/driver-licenses-id-cards/what-to-bring/What protection is included with my RVezy rental?
Every RVezy booking includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so your North Merritt Island RV trip starts with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle while you're on the road, and you choose your coverage level during checkout to fit your trip and comfort level. If a tire blows out on the Bennett Causeway or your battery dies at a Kennedy Space Center launch viewing pullout, one call to RVezy support gets help dispatched. It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it's substantial financial protection that lets you focus on rocket launches instead of worst-case scenarios.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my plans change?
Plans shift, especially on the Space Coast where rocket launches can scrub and reschedule, so RVezy applies a clear, consistent cancellation policy that protects you. Every booking includes a money-back grace period right after you reserve, with additional refund tiers depending on how far out from your trip you cancel. RVezy sets and administers all cancellation terms, so you get the same process no matter which listing you choose. In rare cases like hurricanes or other natural disasters, the RVezy support team works directly with you on solutions. Book your North Merritt Island RV trip with confidence, then review the full policy details in the Help Center before your departure date.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in North Merritt Island?
Absolutely, and your pup will love it. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in North Merritt Island, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see them instantly. On the road, leashed dogs are welcome along parts of Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, including the Black Point Wildlife Drive auto tour, and at Lori Wilson Park in nearby Cocoa Beach, which has a dedicated off-leash dog beach. Canaveral National Seashore does not allow pets on its beaches, so plan accordingly. Bring extra fresh water in summer, since Florida pavement gets very hot and your dog's paws will thank you for early morning walks.
fws.gov/refuge/merritt-island/visit-usCan the RV be delivered to my campground or vacation rental?
Yes, RV delivery in North Merritt Island is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect if you're nervous about driving a big rig over the Indian River bridges. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome rental in North Merritt Island directly to Manatee Hammock Park in Titusville, KARS Park near Kennedy Space Center, or even a private driveway, then set up the awning, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile each way, with most hosts within a 30-mile radius. Use the Delivery filter when searching, message the host with your exact address, and they'll quote you on the spot.

Each host sets their own mileage policy: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, others offer unlimited mileage. fdot.gov/Where should I stay during my RV camping trip in North Merritt Island?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping in North Merritt Island and the surrounding Space Coast. Manatee Hammock Park in Titusville (about 12 miles north) offers 166 full-hookup sites under shady oaks with a 198-foot fishing pier and front-row rocket launch views. KARS Park, run by the NASA Exchange just over the causeway, has 104 waterfront sites on the Banana River. Jetty Park Campground in Cape Canaveral sits right on the Atlantic with jetty fishing access. Sonrise Palms Christian RV Park in Cocoa and Encore Space Coast in Rockledge round out the best campgrounds near North Merritt Island. Pro tip: book Manatee Hammock through Brevard County WebTrac as soon as your dates are firm, it fills fast around launches.
brevardfl.gov/ParksAndRecreation/CampgroundsWhen is the best time to visit North Merritt Island in an RV?
The sweet spot is late October through April, when daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, humidity drops, mosquitoes back off, and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge fills with migratory birds, including roseate spoonbills near Haulover Canal. December and January nights cool to the 50s Fahrenheit, perfect for campfires at Manatee Hammock. Summer (June through September) brings 90 Fahrenheit heat, daily afternoon thunderstorms, and active hurricane season, though early mornings on the water are still beautiful. Check the launch schedule at Kennedy Space Center before booking, an Artemis or Falcon Heavy launch can turn any night into the most memorable evening of your Space Coast trip.
weather.gov/mlb/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I be okay driving around North Merritt Island?
You've got this. First time renting an RV in North Merritt Island is genuinely easier than most places, because the main roads (SR-3, SR-405, Courtenay Parkway) are flat, wide, and well-marked with no mountain passes or tight switchbacks. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering generator start-up, leveling, awning, slide-outs, and dumping tanks, and they're a text away during your trip. If even that feels like a lot, choose a host who offers delivery and setup so the RV is ready to enjoy when you arrive. Pro tip: avoid the NASA Causeway (SR-405) within four hours of a scheduled launch, traffic backs up for miles.
fdot.gov/safety/driving-safelyWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on the Bennett Causeway, a dead battery at KARS Park, or a tow off Highway A1A is one phone call away. RVezy's support team is also available before, during, and after your trip through the Help Center and direct messaging. Your host is usually the fastest first call for quirky vehicle questions (like how to relight a propane fridge), and most North Merritt Island hosts respond within minutes. Pro tip: snap a few photos of the dashboard and hookup setup during your walkthrough, it makes troubleshooting calls way faster if anything pops up later.
fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo/Can I take my RV across state lines or into Canada from North Merritt Island?
Yes, your RV road trip from North Merritt Island can absolutely cross state lines. Most hosts welcome travel throughout the continental United States, with popular routes heading north to Georgia's Cumberland Island (about 200 miles), the Great Smoky Mountains (around 600 miles), or up the East Coast to Washington D.C. Cross-border trips into Canada may be allowed with advance host approval and required documentation, so message the host before booking if that's your plan. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the insurance coverage does not extend there. Confirm each host's specific travel policy in the listing or by message, then start mapping your route, I-95 north and I-75 west open up endless adventures from the Space Coast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel during my Space Coast RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, so here's a realistic picture. Class B campervans get 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Florida gas prices typically hover around $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon, with diesel slightly higher. A 200-mile loop from North Merritt Island to Orlando and back in a Class C burns roughly 20 gallons (around $65). Fill up at the Wawa or Cumberland Farms on SR-3 before crossing the causeway, prices on the barrier islands trend a few cents higher. Pro tip: download the GasBuddy app and travel with a half-full tank to keep weight (and consumption) down on Brevard County's long flat highways.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near North Merritt Island?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best campgrounds near North Merritt Island. Manatee Hammock Park accepts reservations up to 180 days ahead for non-residents through Brevard County WebTrac, and waterfront sites with rocket-launch views sell out within minutes when the booking window opens. Jetty Park Campground takes reservations 11 months out through the Canaveral Port Authority site, and KARS Park books 6 months in advance. For state parks like Sebastian Inlet (about 50 miles south), use ReserveAmerica's Florida State Parks portal exactly 11 months ahead at 8 a.m. Eastern. Pro tip: if you strike out, set a calendar alert for cancellations 7 to 10 days before your dates, that's when most no-shows release their sites.
floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/sebastian-inlet-state-parkWhat are local driving conditions like around North Merritt Island?
Driving here is refreshingly mellow once you know a few quirks. North Merritt Island sits on a flat barrier island connected by the SR-3 Haulover Canal Bridge to the north, the Bennett Causeway (SR-528) to the south, and the Max Brewer Causeway to Titusville on the west. Bridges have generous clearance for any RV (no low overpasses to worry about) and crosswinds can pick up over the Indian River, so ease off the gas to 45 to 50 MPH on causeways during gusty days. Summer afternoon thunderstorms roll in like clockwork between 2 and 5 p.m., so plan driving in the morning. Watch for alligators and wading birds crossing roads in the Wildlife Refuge, especially at dawn and dusk.
fdot.gov/agencyresources/mapsWhat amenities can I expect at local campgrounds?
Most Space Coast campgrounds are well equipped for a smooth RV trip. Manatee Hammock Park offers 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups, hot showers, laundry, a pool, pickleball, and a fishing pier. Jetty Park provides full hookups plus beach access and a bait shop. KARS Park has electric and water at every site with a centralized dump station, plus boat ramps on the Banana River. For dumping and filling water mid-trip, you can use the public dump stations at Wickham Park in Melbourne and Long Point Park in Sebastian Inlet. Most parks include free Wi-Fi near the office, though it's spotty at sites, so download Netflix episodes before you go. Bring a bug zapper, Florida no-see-ums show up at dusk near the lagoons.
brevardfl.gov/ParksAndRecreation/Campgrounds/ManateeHammockParkWhat's inside a typical RV rental in North Merritt Island?
You'll feel right at home. A typical motorhome rental in North Merritt Island includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds, a full kitchen (3-burner stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink), a private bathroom with shower and toilet, roof-mounted air conditioning (essential for Florida), heating, a TV with DVD or streaming, and seatbelted seating for travel. Most rigs include a generator or solar package for off-grid use, fresh-water and gray/black holding tanks, and a propane tank for cooking. Campervan rental in North Merritt Island leans smaller and nimbler, perfect for two travelers heading to Cocoa Beach. Each listing spells out exactly what's included, so filter by sleeps count and amenities to match your group.
energy.gov/energysaver/rv-energy-efficiencyWhat add-ons can I get, and how does pickup work?
Hosts offer lots of extras to make life easier. Common add-ons include kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bed linens and towels ($15 to $35), camping chairs, generators, bike racks, paddleboards, and propane top-offs. Many North Merritt Island hosts also offer pre-stocked groceries and Kennedy Space Center launch viewing packages. Pickup typically happens at the host's home or a meeting point near SR-3 or the Bennett Causeway, with a 45 to 60 minute walkthrough covering every system. Mileage policies range from 100 free miles per night to unlimited, with extra miles billed at $0.30 to $0.50. Pro tip: book the delivery add-on if you want to skip driving entirely, the host brings the rig to your campground and picks it up when you're done.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/rv-rentersHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card at booking, and the rental cost is typically split into an initial charge and a balance due before pickup. A refundable security deposit (usually $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held before your trip starts and released within a few days of a clean return with no damage. All transactions stay on-platform, so never pay a host by cash, wire, or an external app, that's how disputes happen. Do a thorough timestamped photo walk-around with your host at pickup and dropoff through the RVezy messaging system, it makes the deposit return seamless and stress-free.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAny insider tips for a perfect family RV trip in North Merritt Island?
Here's the local secret: time your family RV trip in North Merritt Island around a Kennedy Space Center launch. Check the schedule on NASA.gov, then post up at Space View Park in Titusville or along the Max Brewer Causeway for free front-row views, no tickets needed. During the day, drive the 7-mile Black Point Wildlife Drive at Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge to spot alligators, roseate spoonbills, and bald eagles without leaving the comfort of your rig. Grab lunch at Dixie Crossroads in Titusville for their famous rock shrimp, picnic on Playalinda Beach, and end the day at Cocoa Beach Pier for sunset. It's the kind of day kids remember for life.
