Campgrounds and RV parks near Port Richey, FL

The Gulf coastline anchors most trips. Boat ramps and fishing piers line the lower Pithlachascotee and Anclote rivers, and paddlers can launch for the barrier islands offshore. Anclote Key Preserve State Park sits a short boat ride from shore and offers a quiet beach experience for day trips. Inland, Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park includes a 7.3-mile paved multi-use trail that connects to the 42-mile Suncoast Trail, plus roughly 32 miles of marked hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Day trips are easy: Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks sit about 10 miles south and preserve the area's Greek sponge-diving heritage with shops, restaurants, and boat tours. Honeymoon Island State Park is roughly 25 miles south in Dunedin, with beaches, nature trails, and bird watching. Weeki Wachee Springs State Park is about 30 miles north in Spring Hill, known for live mermaid shows and clear-water paddling.

West-central Florida runs on a two-season calendar: a mild, dry cool season and a hot, wet warm season. From roughly November through April, daytime highs are comfortable, humidity drops, and mosquitoes ease. This is snowbird season, and private parks around Port Richey fill with monthly guests. State park sites in the region are also hardest to book in these months. Late spring is a sweet spot for shorter trips. May is the sunniest month, averaging about 10.4 hours of sunshine per day. By June the rainy season begins. A distinct rainy season runs from July through September, and July averages about 251 mm of precipitation across roughly 20 rainy days. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily and heat indices climb, with August heat index values often approaching 104°F. Hurricane season officially spans June through November, with peak activity from August into early October. Travelers in that window should build flexibility into bookings and monitor National Hurricane Center advisories. November is the driest month, averaging about 47 mm over 5 rainy days, and marks the start of the busy cool-season stretch.

Expect flat, largely paved or shell sites at private parks, with mature oaks providing partial shade. Full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp) are standard at the RV resorts around Port Richey, along with laundry, restrooms, and often a pool or clubhouse geared toward long-stay residents. Sites can be tight side-by-side; measure awning clearance. At Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Park the setting shifts to pine flatwoods, cypress domes, and open prairie, with tent sites and simple cabins rather than full-hookup pads. Cell service varies throughout the region, with more remote areas having limited connectivity. Wildlife is part of the deal: expect alligators in freshwater ponds, wading birds, armadillos, and heavy insect pressure in the warm months. Bring bug spray, a rain plan for summer afternoons, and a surge protector, and secure food and trash against raccoons.
