Camping near Wright, Florida
Wright is an unincorporated community in Okaloosa County, positioned just inland from Fort Walton Beach on the Emerald Coast of the Florida Panhandle. It sits between Choctawhatchee Bay and Santa Rosa Sound, giving RV travelers quick access to sugar-white Gulf beaches, bayfront parks, and the tourist corridor along U.S. Highway 98.
Most campgrounds serving Wright are private RV parks clustered around Fort Walton Beach, Mary Esther, and Okaloosa Island. Full-service parks in the area typically offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, laundry, hot showers, and on-site dump stations. Forest Grove RV Park, A COZY CORNER RV LODGE, Fort Walton Beach RV Park, Destin West RV Resort, and Bayview RV Campground are among the closest options.
For state-park camping, Henderson Beach State Park in Destin sits along Emerald Coast Parkway and offers beach access, nature trails, fishing, picnicking, swimming, and a developed campground. Topsail Hill Preserve State Park lies roughly a half-hour east in Santa Rosa Beach and is another popular booking for RV travelers using Wright as a base.
Things to do around Wright
The beaches on Okaloosa Island are the main draw. The island offers white sands and clear water for swimming and sunbathing, John Beasley Park has picnic areas and beach access, and the shoreline supports paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling. The Okaloosa Island Pier delivers a wide view of the Gulf, and anglers target Spanish mackerel, kingfish, and pompano from the deck.
Families with kids gravitate to the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, which features dolphin and sea lion shows, stingray touch experiences, and other marine exhibits. Other local landmarks include the Indian Temple Mound and Museum, the Air Force Armament Museum, and the Heritage Park and Cultural Center.
For a slower day, the boardwalk shops and waterfront restaurants along Destin Harbor are a short drive east on Highway 98.

The Emerald Coast is a year-round destination, but the shoulder seasons offer the easiest RV trips. Many campers prefer September to October or April to May to avoid peak humidity, though most private parks stay open year-round. Spring brings warm days without peak crowds, and Gulf water temperatures climb into swimmable ranges by late May.
Summer is the busiest window. School-break demand fills coastal parks quickly, daytime highs push into the low 30s Celsius, and afternoon thunderstorms are common. Late July and August are typically the warmest months for sea temperatures, and swimming conditions are usually most pleasant during this stretch.
Fall cools gradually and stays pleasant through November, but hurricane season overlaps a large part of the calendar. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, so keep an eye on National Hurricane Center forecasts and have your park host's number handy. Winters are mild and quieter, drawing snowbirds to long-stay sites at private resorts along the coast.
How to book a campsite near Wright
Private RV parks around Fort Walton Beach take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Book waterfront and full-hookup sites months ahead for summer weekends and spring break, and confirm rig-length limits and pet policies before locking in dates.
For state-park sites, reservations run through the Florida State Parks system at the Florida State Parks reservations website or by calling 800-326-3521. Florida residents may book up to 11 months in advance, and non-residents up to 10 months in advance. Campsites not reserved or occupied may be rented to walk-in visitors on a first-come, first-served basis.
Henderson Beach campsites book out well ahead for summer weekends, especially June through August, so start looking several months out and be ready when the reservation window opens.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a coastal, resort-style feel rather than remote wilderness. Private parks in the Fort Walton Beach area tend to run paved or gravel pads with concrete patios, pool access, and easy walks or shuttles to the beach. State-park campgrounds are more natural in setting but still well developed. Henderson Beach State Park has 60 campsites arranged in loops with water, 30 and 50-amp electric service, sewer hookups, picnic tables, ground grills, and clothesline posts, with a mix of back-in and pull-through sites and heated, air-conditioned bathhouses.
Traffic along U.S. Highway 98 backs up in summer, so plan grocery runs and beach trips outside peak hours. Cell coverage is generally reliable through the corridor, though it can dip inside dune areas near the shoreline.
Gulf sun is strong, biting insects appear near marshes at dusk, and afternoon storms roll in quickly, so pack shade, repellent, and awning tie-downs.

weather.gov/mob/I'm a first-time renter. Will I really be okay driving an RV around Wright, FL?
Yes, and you are in great hands. If this is your first time renting an RV, your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, awning, generator, tanks, and hookups. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008834-Where-can-I-travel-with-an-RVezy-rentalHow much should I budget for fuel on a Wright, FL RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest line items, but it is easy to plan for. Florida gas prices typically run between $3.00 and $3.50 per gallon, which is friendlier than the national average. Class C motorhomes get roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A rigs around 6 to 8 MPG, campervan rental Wright options around 14 to 18 MPG, and trucks towing travel trailers around 10 to 12 MPG. For a typical 300-mile loop through Destin, 30A, and Panama City Beach, expect $90 to $130 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at Pilot or Love's just off I-10 before heading south, prices on Highway 98 near the beaches run higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Wright, FL?
Book early and you will thank yourself. Florida state parks like Henderson Beach, Topsail Hill Preserve, and Grayton Beach open reservations 11 months ahead through the Florida State Parks reservation system (powered by ReserveAmerica), and prime summer weekends sell out the day the window opens. Private parks like Destin West and Emerald Beach RV Park usually book 3 to 6 months ahead for June through August. For a spring or fall family RV trip Wright, 4 to 8 weeks ahead is usually enough. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder at 11 months out for July 4th week, those sites disappear in minutes.
floridastateparks.org/learn/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around Wright, FL?
Driving around Wright is genuinely RV-friendly. The terrain is flat, the roads are wide, and the main routes (US-98, Highway 85, and Interstate 10) handle big rigs comfortably. Watch for two things: summer afternoon thunderstorms can dump heavy rain quickly between June and September, and tourist traffic on US-98 through Destin can crawl on summer weekends, so plan beach-area drives before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. Hurricane season runs June through November, so monitor the National Weather Service Mobile office before any extended trip. Bridges over Choctawhatchee Bay (Mid-Bay Bridge and Brooks Bridge) are wind-sensitive for tall RVs on gusty days.
weather.gov/mob/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Wright, FL?
Most campgrounds near Wright are well-equipped for a smooth stay. Expect 30 and 50 amp electrical hookups, potable water fill stations, and dump stations at parks like Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park, Destin West RV Resort, and Emerald Beach RV Park. Many private parks throw in free WiFi, laundry, hot showers, pools, and fishing piers, while state parks lean more toward natural beauty, hiking, and Gulf access. Dump stations are easy to find at most full-hookup parks, and Eglin AFB Camp Robbins offers a dedicated dump station for guests. Pro tip: top off fresh water at your campground before heading to any boondocking sites in Blackwater River State Forest.
floridastateparks.org/learn/campingWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Wright, FL?
Local RVs come stocked for comfortable Gulf Coast living. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning (essential for Florida summers) and furnace heat, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 depending on the rig, and dining areas with seatbelts for travel. Most listings include a TV, many offer WiFi or hotspot capability, and larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often have generators for off-grid power, which is handy if you camp at primitive sites in Blackwater River State Forest. Check the listing's amenities list before booking and message the host to confirm anything specific like outdoor showers or kayak racks.
flhsmv.gov/motor-vehicles-tags-titles/recreational-vehicles/What add-ons and pickup options do hosts in Wright offer?
Hosts in the Wright and Fort Walton Beach area get creative with add-ons that make your trip easier. Common extras include bedding and linen packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor mats, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, paddleboards or kayaks (perfect for Choctawhatchee Bay), and beach gear like umbrellas and coolers. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Wright, Fort Walton Beach, Niceville, or Mary Esther, but delivery to local campgrounds, airports (VPS is 5 minutes away), and vacation rentals is widely offered. flyvps.com/How do payments and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Florida through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash changing hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (amount varies by RV) and released after the trip ends, assuming no damage or excessive cleaning. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround video at pickup and dropoff with your host, empty the black and gray tanks if required, refuel to the original level, and return the RV reasonably tidy. Keep all receipts for fuel and dump station fees in case any questions come up after your trip.
