Campgrounds and RV parks near Alma, GA

General Coffee State Park is the main outdoor draw, with a boardwalk over the Seventeen Mile River through cypress swamp, 13.4 miles of equestrian trails, a Heritage Farm with log cabins and farm animals, and a small lake for fishing and paddling. It is a good pick for families traveling with kids or horses, since the Equestrian sites at General Coffee State Park include hitching posts and access to riding trails, though stables are not provided. Laura S. Walker State Park, about 40 minutes south near Waycross, provides lake fishing, swimming, birding, and an 18-hole golf course on a 120-acre lake at the northern edge of the Okefenokee Swamp. In Alma itself, the annual Georgia Blueberry Festival each June draws crowds with a parade, 5K, car show, and cooking contests.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of Georgia. March through May brings warm days, cooler nights, and wildflowers in the wiregrass, while October and November offer dry, mild weather after peak hurricane season eases. These shoulder months line up with lower humidity and fewer biting insects. Summer runs long, hot, and humid, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and heat indices well into the upper 90s. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and peaks from mid-August through October, which can affect coastal and interior southeast Georgia. RV travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories when booking summer or early-fall trips. Winter is short and generally mild, with daytime highs often in the 60s and only occasional hard freezes. It is a workable season for snowbird stays and for visiting General Coffee State Park without crowds, though some private campgrounds may reduce services during the slower months.

Campgrounds in the Alma area range from quiet, small private RV parks with full hookups to a full-service state park with a Heritage Farm, cottages, and equestrian facilities. Drive-in sites at General Coffee State Park include water and electric hookups, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills, with a nearby comfort station offering hot showers and a dump station serving the campground. Expect flat, sandy terrain, tall pines, and mixed cypress-hardwood swamp habitat. Wildlife includes gopher tortoises, indigo snakes, and abundant birdlife, so leashed pets and caution on trails are important. Cell coverage is generally solid in town and along US 1, but can be spotty deeper in the woods. Come prepared for humidity, biting insects in the warm months, and occasional afternoon storms. Fuel, groceries, and RV supplies are available in Alma and Douglas.
