Campgrounds near Avondale Estates
Avondale Estates sits in DeKalb County just east of downtown Atlanta, roughly 15 miles from the granite dome and 3,200-acre grounds of Stone Mountain Park. That proximity shapes RV camping in the area: most sites are inside or minutes from the park, with the rest clustered along the metro Atlanta interstate corridors.
Stone Mountain Park Family Campground is the main draw, offering full and partial hookups, tent sites, yurts, and rental units on a wooded, partly lakefront property inside the park gates. Stone Mountain Campground refers to the same operation under its current Campspot branding. Stone Mountain Heights RV-Mobile Home Park sits just outside the park boundary and leans toward longer-term stays.
For travelers who want quicker access to west and north Atlanta, Jones RV Park and Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort provide standard hookup sites off the interstate, trading forested surroundings for shorter drives to Marietta, the Battery, and downtown attractions.
Things to do near Avondale Estates
Stone Mountain Park anchors most trips. Families can ride the Summit Skyride cable car or the Scenic Railroad, hike the walk-up trail to the top of the granite dome, and take in the seasonal laser show over the lawn. The park also includes a swimming pool, sand volleyball, playground, and general store within the campground area, plus historic sites elsewhere on the property.
Off-park options are close. Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area offers quieter granite-outcrop hiking a short drive south. Downtown Atlanta puts the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, Zoo Atlanta, and Centennial Olympic Park within about 20 to 30 minutes. Marietta-based stays add easy access to the Battery, Truist Park, and the Chattahoochee River.

Metro Atlanta camps year-round, but the shoulder seasons carry the trip. Mid-March through May and mid-September through October deliver mild days and reliable outdoor conditions. Spring brings frequent rain and rolling thunderstorms, so plan for wet afternoons. Fall is the driest stretch and lines up with Stone Mountain Park's Pumpkin Festival, which runs on weekends from mid-September into early November and pushes campground demand up.
Summer is hot and humid, with highs regularly in the upper 80s and low 90s and afternoon thunderstorms typical from June into August. Sites still fill, especially on holiday weekends, so booking early matters. Shaded and lakefront sites at Stone Mountain are the first to go.
Winter is mild by North American standards but variable. Freezing nights occur mainly from November through March, and hard freezes are uncommon, so most parks in the area stay open with hookups. Snow is rare and rarely lasts.

How to book
Stone Mountain Park Family Campground, listed on Campspot as Stone Mountain Campground, takes reservations through Campspot or the park's own site. Lakefront and full-hookup sites are the most competitive. The campground requires a two-night minimum on standard bookings and a three-night minimum on major holiday weekends, with a seven-night cap for tent campers and a two-week cap for motorhomes. A daily parking permit is charged separately from the site reservation and covers the rest of the stay after arrival.
Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort and Stone Mountain Heights RV-Mobile Home Park take reservations directly by phone or through their websites and carry a mix of overnight and monthly sites, so calling ahead confirms overnight availability. Jones RV Park is best reached by phone.
What to expect
Stone Mountain's campground is large, with more than 400 sites spread across the east side of the park off Stonewall Jackson Drive, including roughly 250 RV sites in premium, regular, and partial-hookup tiers. Sites range from primitive tent pads to paved full-hookup pads, and terrain varies, so leveling blocks and a longer hose and cord kit are worth packing. Comfort stations with showers are placed throughout the loops.
Cell service is generally strong across metro Atlanta, though on-site Wi-Fi at older parks can be spotty. Expect traffic to matter more than distance: a 15-mile trip to downtown can take 45 minutes at rush hour. Sites at the Marietta-area parks sit close together and near interstates, so highway noise is common. Pets are widely welcome, but check specific park rules before arrival.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Avondale Estates, GA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Avondale Estates, GA?
RV rental in Avondale Estates is surprisingly affordable, with travel trailers starting around $60 to $120 per night and motorhomes typically ranging from $150 to $250 per night depending on size and season. To score a cheap RV rental in Avondale Estates, book midweek (Sunday through Thursday), travel in the shoulder months of March, April, October, or November when Atlanta weather is mild, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: filtering for travel trailers and pop-ups instead of Class A motorhomes can cut your nightly rate nearly in half, leaving more room in the budget for Stone Mountain Park tickets and Decatur Square dinners.
visitdecaturgeorgia.com/What license do I need to rent an RV in Avondale Estates, Georgia?
Good news: a standard Georgia Class C driver's license (or its equivalent from any U.S. state) is all you need to rent an RV in Avondale Estates for virtually every RV on RVezy, including Class A motorhomes, Class C motorhomes, campervans, and towable trailers. Georgia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for personal-use recreational vehicles. You just need to be 25 or older and complete the quick ID verification step on RVezy when you book. Visiting from another country? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) before you fly into Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) and pair it with your home license. That's it, you're ready to roll.
dds.georgia.gov/license-classes-and-typesIs insurance and roadside assistance included with my RV rental in Avondale Estates?
Every RV rental in Avondale Estates booked through RVezy comes with a protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit I-285 or head up to the Blue Ridge with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level (not the host) during checkout, so you can match coverage to your comfort level, and the plan covers eligible damage to the RV during your trip. If a tire blows on I-75 or the battery dies at Stone Mountain Campground, one call to RVezy gets help dispatched. It's the kind of safety net that helps first-time renters relax and enjoy the trip.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat is the cancellation policy if my Avondale Estates RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and every booking includes a grace-period window where you can cancel for a full refund shortly after booking. After that, refund amounts depend on how far out your trip is, and you'll see the exact terms during checkout. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit so you can rebook. Pro tip: if severe weather is tracking toward Georgia and might disrupt your Tybee Island or Savannah leg, reach out to RVezy support early, the team is available before, during, and after your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Avondale Estates?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Avondale Estates is easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see dozens of hosts who welcome four-legged road trippers. Many Atlanta-area hosts are dog owners themselves and won't blink at a well-behaved pup. Once you're on the road, your dog will love Avondale Estates' own Dog Park at Willis Park, plus nearby Stone Mountain Park's pet-friendly walking paths and the off-leash areas at Piedmont Park in midtown Atlanta. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about their favorite local dog-friendly trails. Most are happy to share insider spots.
avondaleestates.org/parks-recreation/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Avondale Estates?
Yes, RV delivery in Avondale Estates is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a 30-foot motorhome through Atlanta traffic. Many hosts will deliver and set up your rental directly at Stone Mountain Campground, a nearby state park, or even your driveway in Avondale Estates, complete with leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough. Just use the Delivery filter when searching, and check each host's delivery radius and fee (typically a flat rate plus per-mile). Pro tip: delivery to Stone Mountain (about 7 miles east) is a popular, affordable choice that lets you focus on the fun instead of the freeway.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Avondale%20Estates%2C%20GeorgiaHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Avondale Estates?
You can go as far as you want, and Avondale Estates is one of the best launchpads in the Southeast. Each host sets their own mileage policy: some offer generous daily allowances, others provide RV rental with unlimited mileage (look for the unlimited-mileage badge on the listing). Popular drives include Stone Mountain Park (10 minutes), Helen, GA in the Bavarian-themed mountains (about 90 miles north), Chattanooga, TN (115 miles northwest), Savannah's historic district (250 miles southeast), and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (about 175 miles north). Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Smokies loop, prioritize unlimited-mileage listings to keep your budget predictable.
nps.gov/grsm/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Avondale Estates, GA?
You're spoiled for choice on RV camping in Avondale Estates. Top picks include Stone Mountain Campground (just 7 miles east, with full hookups, lake access, and the famous laser show within walking distance), Sweetwater Creek State Park's Yurt Village and RV-friendly day-use area (about 25 miles west), Atlanta South RV Resort in McDonough (35 miles south, big-rig friendly), and Margaritaville RV Resort at Lanier Islands (about 50 miles northeast on Lake Lanier). For a quieter escape, Hard Labor Creek State Park in Rutledge (60 miles east) has wooded sites with water and electric. Pro tip: Stone Mountain books up fast for summer weekends, so reserve 3 to 6 months ahead through the Georgia State Parks system.
gastateparks.org/StoneMountainWhen is the best time of year for an Avondale Estates RV trip?
Spring (mid-March through May) and fall (late September through early November) are the sweet spots for RV camping in Avondale Estates, with daytime highs in the comfortable 65 to 78°F range and crisp, bug-free nights. Summer is warm and humid, with highs around 88 to 92°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, perfect if you're heading to Lake Lanier or the cool waters of the North Georgia mountains. Winters are mild (50s by day, 30s at night), making December through February a quiet, affordable season for an Atlanta-area motorhome rental. Pro tip: time your trip for the dogwood bloom in early April or peak fall color in late October for unforgettable scenery.
weather.gov/ffc/I'm first time renting an RV. Will I get help learning how everything works?
You won't be left guessing. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery, if you choose that option), walking you through how to operate the generator, slide-outs, awning, water and sewer hookups, propane, AC, and the dashboard controls. Most walkthroughs take 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts are reachable by message throughout your trip. Combined with 24/7 roadside assistance and RVezy's support team, first time renting an RV in Avondale Estates feels totally doable. Pro tip: record the walkthrough on your phone, it's the cheat sheet you'll thank yourself for at your first campsite.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if my RV breaks down on a Georgia road trip?
You're covered. Every RV rental in Avondale Estates includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, so a flat tire on I-285, a dead battery at Amicalola Falls, or a tow needed off Highway 400 is just one phone call away. Dispatch can arrange towing, jump starts, tire changes, fuel delivery, and lockout service across Georgia and beyond. Your host is also a quick message away for vehicle-specific questions, and RVezy support is on standby. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and roadside-assistance contact info at pickup and save it to your phone, so you're not digging through paperwork on the shoulder of the highway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Avondale Estates RV rental across state lines or into Canada or Mexico?
Yes, interstate travel is fully allowed and one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Avondale Estates. You can cruise to Tennessee's Great Smoky Mountains, Florida's Gulf beaches, the Carolinas' Outer Banks, or all the way up to Washington, D.C., no problem. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed with some hosts, message them before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage do not extend there. Pro tip: a 7-day loop from Avondale Estates to Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and back through Chattanooga is a renter favorite, all within easy interstate range.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Avondale Estates?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but easy to estimate. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 MPG, Class A's around 6 to 10 MPG, campervans 15 to 20 MPG, and towables depend on your tow vehicle. Georgia gas prices usually run a bit below the national average, and you'll find competitively priced stations along I-20, I-75, and I-85 near Avondale Estates (the QuikTrip and RaceTrac chains are local favorites). For a 500-mile weekend loop in a Class C, budget roughly $180 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest diesel along your route, savings of 30 to 50 cents per gallon are common between Atlanta exits.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Avondale Estates?
For the best campgrounds near Avondale Estates, plan ahead: Georgia State Parks (including Stone Mountain, Sweetwater Creek, Hard Labor Creek, and Red Top Mountain) open reservations up to 13 months in advance through ReserveAmerica/the official Georgia State Parks site, and summer holiday weekends book out months early. Private parks like Atlanta South RV Resort and Margaritaville at Lanier Islands typically need 4 to 8 weeks for prime weekends. For shoulder-season midweek trips, 1 to 2 weeks is usually fine. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 13 months before Memorial Day or July 4th to grab Stone Mountain's lakefront sites the moment they release. They go in minutes.
gastateparks.org/ReservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Avondale Estates and metro Atlanta?
Avondale Estates sits just inside I-285 (the Perimeter), so the biggest local driving consideration is rush-hour traffic on I-285, I-20, and I-85 between roughly 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m., when a 30-foot motorhome is not where you want to be. Plan departures for mid-morning or after 7 p.m. and you'll glide right out of town. Watch for low-clearance bridges in downtown Atlanta (some are under 12 feet) and stick to interstate routes when possible. North Georgia mountain roads to Helen and Blue Ridge are scenic but winding, take them slow. Pro tip: if city driving makes you nervous, book a host who offers delivery to your first campground.
511ga.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Avondale Estates?
Most RV parks near Avondale Estates offer the full setup: 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer hookups (or convenient dump stations), hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and often pools or lake access. Stone Mountain Campground has 400+ sites with full hookups plus a camp store and shuttle to the park's attractions. Sweetwater Creek State Park has a dump station and potable water fill. For mid-trip dumping and refilling between stops, Jones RV Park and Atlanta Marietta RV Resort both offer dump-station access. Pro tip: download the Sanidumps or RV Life app before you leave Avondale Estates, it maps every dump station and fresh-water fill point along Georgia's interstates.
gastateparks.org/SweetwaterCreekWhat's actually inside the RV? Beds, kitchen, bathroom, Wi-Fi?
Comfort is the whole point. Most motorhome rental Avondale Estates options include a real queen or king bed, a convertible dinette and/or sofa bed (so a Class C easily sleeps 4 to 6), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, plus a private bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning, furnace, and a generator or shore-power hookup are standard. Many hosts include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, and basic kitchen supplies. Wi-Fi typically comes from your phone's hotspot since most campgrounds have spotty signal. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and confirm bed configuration with the host before booking, especially for a family RV trip Avondale Estates style.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Avondale%20Estates%2C%20GeorgiaWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my campervan rental Avondale Estates?
Hosts offer a great menu of extras to make your campervan rental Avondale Estates trip turnkey: bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, kitchen kits, propane fire pits, bike racks, generators, paddleboards, and even pre-stocked pantries. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Avondale Estates, Decatur, Stone Mountain, or Tucker, and many will meet you at a nearby parking lot for convenience. Each host sets their own mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day, with unlimited options available) and a clear pickup and dropoff window. Pro tip: add the linen package, you're on vacation, you don't want to be making beds with sheets from home.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Avondale%20Estates%2C%20GeorgiaHow does payment and the security deposit work when I rent an RV in Avondale Estates?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at checkout (no cash exchanged with the host), typically with a credit or debit card, and your booking total covers the nightly rate, service fee, and your chosen protection plan. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, the amount varies by host and RV type, and it's released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any hiccups, do a thorough walk-around with the host at pickup and dropoff, photograph the exterior and interior, and return the RV with the agreed fuel and tank levels. Pro tip: use a credit card with a high limit to keep the hold from squeezing your travel spending.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in an RV in Avondale Estates itself?
Avondale Estates is a charming residential city, so overnight RV parking on city streets is restricted, but you've got excellent options within minutes. Stone Mountain Campground is just 7 miles east with full hookups year-round. Many RVezy hosts can deliver right to your driveway or a friend's house in Avondale Estates for loading and unloading. For quick overnight stops, several Cracker Barrel and Walmart locations along I-285 and I-20 (such as the Lithonia and Stonecrest stores) traditionally allow self-contained RVs to overnight with manager permission. Pro tip: park-and-explore Avondale's walkable downtown Tudor Village for lunch at Little Tart Bakeshop, then head straight to Stone Mountain for the night, it's the perfect first-day combo.
