Camping near Baxley, Georgia
Baxley sits in Appling County in southeast Georgia, on the coastal plain between the Altamaha and Ohoopee Rivers. It works well as a base for RV travelers heading to the Georgia coast, the Okefenokee, or Savannah, and it has a small cluster of private RV parks close to town along with a state park option within an easy drive.
Private options near the city include Pecans & Pines RV Park, JB's RV Park, and Hidden Forest RV Club, which typically cater to full-hookup travelers, longer stays, and pull-through big rigs. For a public-land experience, Jack Hill State Park, formerly named Gordonia-Alatamaha State Park, is a 662-acre Georgia state park located in Reidsville, about a 45-minute drive north of Baxley.
Ohoopee River Campground offers river-adjacent camping in the same wiregrass region. Together these options give RV renters a mix of hookups, quiet rural settings, and access to fishing, paddling, and golf without long transit times.
Things to do around Baxley
Water recreation drives most trips in this corner of Georgia. At Jack Hill State Park, picnic tables and shelters surround a small lake where visitors can rent aqua cycles, kayaks and fishing boats during warmer months, and the nearby Altamaha and Ohoopee Rivers add paddling, bank fishing, and wildlife viewing to the itinerary.
Golfers can play the on-site course at Jack Hill. The park's Brazell's Creek Golf Course offers a pro shop and junior/senior discounts. The Par 71 layout plays to just under 7,000 yards from the tips, boasting five sets of tees.
Land-based options include hiking, biking, geocaching, a family playground with a seasonal splash pad, and mini golf at Jack Hill. Around Baxley itself, families use the town for groceries, fuel, and quick meals between longer day trips to the coast or Okefenokee.

Southeast Georgia has a long RV season. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows, with warm days, cool nights, and lower humidity. Wildflowers and mild river conditions make March through May a favorite for paddlers, and October and November bring drier air and easier hiking weather.
Summer is hot and humid. Baxley's July weather is marked by an average high temperature of 90.3°F (32.4°C) and an average low temperature of 73.2°F (22.9°C), and afternoon thunderstorms are common. The month with the most rainfall is August, when the rain falls for 15.9 days, so plan indoor breaks and awning-friendly sites if traveling in peak summer.
Winters are short and mild. January tends to be the coldest month in Baxley, with temperatures averaging a daily high of 57.7°F (14.3°C) and a low of 41°F (5°C), which keeps most parks open year-round. Check for occasional fire bans during dry stretches, as Jack Hill State Park is currently under a total fire ban for campfires, cooking fires, and charcoal grills at all sites.
How to book campsites near Baxley
Georgia State Parks use a central reservation system for Jack Hill. Sites can be booked online through the Georgia State Parks website or by phone. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance. Georgia residents may make reservations up to 14 months in advance. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles. ParkPasses are not included in reservations fees and may be purchased at the Visitor Center at check-in.
Private parks near Baxley, including Pecans & Pines RV Park, JB's RV Park, and Hidden Forest RV Club, generally take reservations by phone or through their own websites. Ohoopee River Campground bookings are handled directly with the campground. For spring, fall, and holiday weekends, book several weeks ahead, and confirm rig length, hookup type, and pet policy at the time of booking.
What to expect on site
Expect small, quiet campgrounds rather than resort-style parks. Jack Hill State Park is open year-round with 29 campsites plus 5 cottages, and sites accommodate RVs up to 60 feet with full hookups, though several reviewers note the close spacing between spots, particularly sites 4 and 5, and 13 and 14. Cell coverage is generally usable in the area, and a dump station is available on the way out of the campground.
Baxley and Reidsville are small towns. Basic groceries, fuel, and fast food are close by, but larger supply runs may mean a drive to Vidalia or Douglas. Alligators are present at Jack Hill's lake and along area rivers, so keep pets leashed and children supervised near the water.
