Campgrounds near Canon, Georgia
Canon sits in northeast Georgia's upper Piedmont, in Franklin County, roughly midway between Atlanta and Greenville and a short drive from Lake Hartwell on the Georgia-South Carolina border. The area combines rolling hardwood hills, small creeks, and a large Corps of Engineers reservoir, giving RV travelers a mix of quiet state-park camping and lake-focused resorts within a 30- to 45-minute radius.
The closest developed campground is Victoria Bryant State Park, a small Georgia State Parks site near Royston, set in the foothills of northeast Georgia, with a compact RV loop. Rock Springs RV Park offers a nearby private option. Toward Lake Hartwell, Hartwell Lakeside KOA Holiday and Carolina Landing RV Resort provide larger, amenity-heavy properties, and Lake Hartwell State Park on the South Carolina side adds another public option.
Most travelers use Canon as a quiet base between Atlanta, Athens, and the Blue Ridge foothills, with Lake Hartwell as the main recreational draw.
Things to do near Canon
Lake Hartwell anchors most trips. The reservoir covers roughly 56,000 acres with 962 miles of shoreline across Georgia and South Carolina, supporting boating, water skiing, swimming, and fishing for largemouth and hybrid bass, striper, crappie, bream, and walleye. Public boat ramps, day-use areas, and swim beaches are spread across both sides of the lake.
At Victoria Bryant State Park, families can hike the short nature trail or the longer perimeter trail through hardwoods and creek crossings, fish two small ponds, and use the seasonal swimming pool. The park also hosts the Highland Walk Golf Course. Athens and the University of Georgia are within roughly a half-hour drive, and Tallulah Gorge is reachable as a day trip.

The Victoria Bryant State Park campground is open year-round, and most private campgrounds on Lake Hartwell operate year-round as well. Several U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds around the lake run on a seasonal schedule; for example, Paynes Creek Campground and its amenities are open seasonally from May 1 to September 30.
Spring and fall bring the most comfortable weather, with mild days, cool nights, and peak leaf color from late October into early November. Summer is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and it is the busiest window for lake recreation and family camping. Reservoir water levels typically drop several feet over the winter, so some shoreline ramps and beaches may be less usable during colder months.
Winters are mild but wet, with brief cold snaps and occasional light snow. Sites are easier to book, but expect shorter days and cooler nights that call for a well-insulated RV.
How to book campsites
Georgia State Parks sites, including Victoria Bryant State Park, are booked through the Georgia State Parks reservation system online or by phone. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance, and Georgia residents may book up to 14 months in advance. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles, is not included in reservation fees, and overnight guests pay only one daily parking fee for the duration of their stay.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds on Lake Hartwell are reserved through Recreation.gov, which lists a mix of full-facility and more primitive sites around the lake. South Carolina's Lake Hartwell State Park uses the South Carolina State Parks reservation system.
Hartwell Lakeside KOA Holiday books directly through KOA, and Carolina Landing RV Resort is a Thousand Trails property with member and public booking options. Book several weeks ahead for summer weekends and holidays.
What to expect on-site
Victoria Bryant State Park has 27 sites with water and electric hookups that can accommodate RVs up to 50 feet in length, each with a picnic table and fire ring. A dump station is available, and the park also offers hot showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities, with pets allowed on leash.
Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Lake Hartwell generally offer water and 50-amp electric, dump stations, and shoreline or lake-view sites, though not every campground has showers or sewer hookups.
Hartwell Lakeside KOA Holiday sits at the former Hart State Park on Lake Hartwell, with lakefront RV and tent sites offering electric and water hookups, plus access to a campground beach, boat ramp, and courtesy docks; many sites do not have sewer. Carolina Landing RV Resort is heavily wooded and hilly, so leveling blocks are commonly needed and larger rigs should expect tight turns.

For a 3-night, 200-mile loop in a Class C, plan roughly $80 to $120 in fuel. For private parks like In The Woods Campground in Canon, 2 to 4 weeks notice usually does the trick. US Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds along Lake Hartwell (like Paynes Creek and Watsadler) are booked through Recreation.gov up to 6 months out. Payment is simple and secure, everything runs through the RVezy platform with no cash exchanged at pickup. You pay your trip total (rental rate, fees, protection plan, and any add-ons) by credit or debit card when you book. A refundable security deposit, separate from your booking payment and typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV, is pre-authorized on your card before pickup rather than charged outright. As long as you return the RV in the agreed condition with no new damage, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: do a quick video walk-around with your host at pickup and drop-off, it protects everyone and keeps deposit returns smooth for your RV rental Georgia trip.
