Campgrounds near Clarkston
Clarkston sits in DeKalb County just east of downtown Atlanta and inside the I-285 perimeter, which makes it a practical base for RV travelers who want city access without staging inside Atlanta itself. Stone Mountain Park is roughly a fifteen-minute drive east, and the Georgia 78 corridor connects Clarkston to a cluster of full-hookup RV parks in Stone Mountain, Lithonia, and Snellville.
Closer-in options include Jones RV Park and Stone Mountain Heights RV-Mobile Home Park, both of which cater to longer-stay renters and travelers who want short commutes into the city. Brooks Lake adds a quieter, water-adjacent alternative within reasonable driving range.
For travelers willing to trade a longer drive for resort-style amenities, Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort sits northwest along I-75, and Atlanta South RV Resort covers the southern approach near the airport. Together these parks give renters coverage on every side of the metro, which is useful when weekend traffic on the perimeter is a factor.
Things to do near Clarkston
Stone Mountain Park is the anchor attraction, with hiking to the summit, a scenic railroad, lake paddling, and seasonal laser shows. The park's 3,200 acres absorb crowds well and give RV families a full day of activity without leaving the property.
Inside Atlanta, families can reach the Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, and the World of Coca-Cola in under thirty minutes from Clarkston outside rush hour. The BeltLine's Eastside Trail is popular for cycling and walking.
Outdoors, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area offers paddling, tubing, and shaded trails north of the city. Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area, south of Clarkston, provides granite-outcrop hiking that is less crowded than Stone Mountain and works well for shoulder-season visits.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Clarkston. From late March through May, daytime highs sit in the seventies, dogwoods and azaleas bloom, and campgrounds around Stone Mountain fill on weekends without hitting the summer heat wall. Autumn, from mid-September through early November, brings similar temperatures with lower humidity and reliable foliage in the north Georgia foothills within a short drive.
Summer is the busiest booking season because school is out and Stone Mountain runs its full events calendar, but afternoon highs regularly reach the upper eighties to low nineties with high humidity, and thunderstorms are common late in the day. Sites with shade and 50-amp service book earliest.
Winter is mild by regional standards and campgrounds around Atlanta typically stay open year-round. Freezes happen but are usually brief, and January and February offer the lowest occupancy and easiest last-minute booking.

How to book campgrounds near Clarkston
Stone Mountain Park Campground takes reservations through its own online booking system and by phone. Weekend and holiday stays typically require a two-night minimum, with major holidays such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day requiring three nights. Booking two to three months ahead is advisable for peak-season weekends.
Private parks in the area, including Jones RV Park, Stone Mountain Heights RV-Mobile Home Park, Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort, and Atlanta South RV Resort, each run their own reservation systems by phone or website. Many private parks in metro Atlanta accept monthly stays, which affects nightly availability during peak weeks.
Georgia State Parks farther afield use the ReserveAmerica platform and open bookings up to thirteen months in advance, with Georgia residents eligible to book up to fourteen months ahead.
What to expect
Most RV parks near Clarkston offer full hookups with water, electric, and sewer, and Stone Mountain Park Campground provides a mix of full and partial hookup sites across roughly 250 RV spots, including pull-through, head-in, and back-in configurations. Big-rig access is generally good at the larger resorts, but confirm length limits at older properties.
Traffic is the practical constraint. I-285, I-20, and I-85 all slow significantly during weekday commutes, so plan arrivals outside 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. windows. GPS routing into Stone Mountain Park can send RVs toward a low underpass at the West Gate, so use the East Gate off US-78.
Expect leash rules for pets, quiet hours after 10 p.m., and paid day-use or parking fees at Stone Mountain Park separate from the campground stay.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Clarkston, GA
How much does an RV rental in Clarkston, GA typically cost?
RV rental in Clarkston is one of the most affordable ways to experience metro Atlanta and north Georgia. On RVezy, you'll typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, campervans and Class B motorhomes from $150 to $250, and larger Class C motorhomes from $175 to $300. Delivered rentals (where the host drops the RV at Stone Mountain Park Campground or your driveway) cost a bit more but skip the towing learning curve. For a cheap RV rental in Clarkston, book midweek shoulder-season dates in March or October, filter by travel trailers, and message a few hosts. Pro tip: weeklong bookings often unlock automatic discounts from owners.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clarkston,GeorgiaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Clarkston, GA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Clarkston for personal travel. The Georgia Department of Driver Services classifies recreational vehicles outside the commercial category, so your standard Class C Georgia license, or any valid US or Canadian license, covers Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels used recreationally. No CDL, no special endorsement. You'll just need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and we'll verify your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas? Bring your home country license (an International Driving Permit is recommended if it is not in English) and you're set to roll out of Clarkston onto I-285.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Clarkston?
Every RVezy booking in Clarkston comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can hit the Atlanta interstates with confidence. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind. You'll choose your coverage level during the booking process, not the host, so you control how much protection you want. Whether you're parking at Stone Mountain Park Campground or driving up to the Blue Ridge, you'll know help is one call away if anything happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Clarkston RV rental?
Booking your Clarkston RV trip is low-risk. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy for every reservation, and it includes a money-back grace period after you book so you have time to lock in plans without pressure. If something unexpected comes up, like severe weather in north Georgia or a family emergency, our support team can walk you through your options. Refund amounts depend on how close to your trip start date you cancel and the conditions involved. The easiest move is to book the RV you love now and reach out to RVezy support if plans change. Most renters never need to.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Clarkston?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Clarkston is easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you'll see listings whose owners welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Stone Mountain Park Campground allows leashed pets at most sites, and the park's wooded trails are a dream for your pup. Closer to home, the Clarkston Community Center Park and PATH trails along the South Fork Peachtree Creek give your dog great pre-trip walks. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, and ask about any cleaning fee so there are no surprises at pickup.
stonemountainpark.com/things-to-do/stay/campgroundCan the RV be delivered to me in Clarkston instead of picking it up?
Yes, RV delivery in Clarkston is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers nervous about driving a big rig out of metro Atlanta. Many local hosts will deliver your motorhome rental in Clarkston directly to Stone Mountain Park Campground, Sweetwater Creek State Park, your driveway, or even Hartsfield-Jackson area hotels. They'll level the RV, hook up power and water, walk you through every system, and pick it up when you're done. Just filter listings by Delivery on the RVezy search page and enter your destination. It's the easiest way to enjoy RV camping in Clarkston without ever sitting behind the wheel of a 30-foot vehicle.
gastateparks.org/SweetwaterCreekHow far can I drive on a Clarkston RV trip, and how does mileage work?
You've got serious road-trip range from Clarkston. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), and some listings offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is perfect for longer trips. Popular drives from Clarkston include Blue Ridge, GA (about 95 miles north), Savannah (about 250 miles southeast), the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee (about 165 miles north), Chattanooga (about 115 miles northwest), and Charleston, SC (about 300 miles east). Every listing shows the mileage policy clearly before you book, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-state loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings to keep your budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clarkston,GeorgiaWhere are the best campgrounds near Clarkston, GA?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Clarkston. The closest and most iconic is Stone Mountain Park Campground (about 6 miles east), with hundreds of wooded sites, full hookups, a lake, pool, and the famous laser show. Sweetwater Creek State Park in Lithia Springs (about 25 miles west) offers quiet, scenic sites near a waterfall trail. Atlanta South RV Resort in McDonough (about 30 miles south) has big-rig pull-throughs and a pool. For mountain views, Vogel State Park (about 95 miles north in Blairsville) is a classic. Pro tip: lakefront sites at Stone Mountain book up fast in spring and fall, so reserve 3 to 6 months out for weekend stays.
gastateparks.org/StoneMountainWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Clarkston?
Clarkston's climate gives you a long camping season, so you've got flexibility. The sweet spots are mid-March through May (highs 65 to 80F, dogwoods and azaleas in bloom) and mid-September through early November (highs 70 to 85F, crisp nights, fall color in north Georgia). Summer is warm and humid, with highs around 88 to 92F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so plan early starts and bring a strong AC. Winters are mild (highs 50 to 58F, occasional dips into the 20s overnight), making it one of the few US metros where RV camping in Clarkston is genuinely a year-round activity. Pro tip: late October is peak leaf-peeping for a drive up to Blue Ridge.
weather.gov/ffc/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Clarkston?
You'll do great, and first time renting an RV is exactly who RVezy is built for. Every host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery), covering the generator, slide-outs, water, propane, dump valves, and driving tips. You'll have their phone number for any questions during your trip, plus 24/7 RVezy support and roadside assistance. For your first Clarkston RV trip, consider a Class C motorhome or a delivered travel trailer (it stays parked at your campground while you explore in your own car). Pro tip: pick a calm destination like Stone Mountain Park for your first night so you can settle in before tackling longer drives.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RV rental in Clarkston booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on I-285, a dead battery in the Stone Mountain parking lot, or a tow on the way to the north Georgia mountains is just a phone call away. You'll also have your host's direct number for quick mechanical questions (most issues are simple fixes like resetting a breaker or checking the propane valve). RVezy's customer support team is available around the clock too. Most trips go smoothly, but it's reassuring to know help is built in from the moment you pick up the keys.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Clarkston RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, multi-state travel is one of the joys of an RV road trip from Clarkston. Most RVezy hosts allow travel anywhere in the continental US, and cross-border trips to Canada are sometimes permitted depending on the host's insurance, so just message before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not allowed on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular interstate routes from Clarkston include Atlanta to Asheville, NC (about 200 miles), Atlanta to the Florida Panhandle (about 320 miles), and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Pro tip: confirm the mileage policy and any out-of-state rules with your host in writing through the RVezy chat before you hit the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Clarkston RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Most Class C motorhomes get 8 to 10 mpg, Class B campervans get 16 to 20 mpg, and a truck towing a travel trailer averages 10 to 13 mpg. Georgia's gas prices typically run a bit below the national average. For a 500-mile loop from Clarkston up to Blue Ridge and back, budget roughly $150 to $225 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: GasBuddy and warehouse club fuel stations around metro Atlanta usually have the cheapest fill-ups before you head out.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Clarkston?
For the most popular spots, book early and you'll be golden. Stone Mountain Park Campground accepts reservations well in advance, and weekend lakefront sites from April through October fill 3 to 6 months out. Georgia State Parks (Sweetwater Creek, Vogel, Red Top Mountain) take reservations online at gastateparks.org up to 13 months ahead, and weekends sell out quickly in spring and fall. For private parks like Atlanta South RV Resort, 4 to 8 weeks is usually fine. Pro tip: weekday stays are far easier to grab last-minute, and many RVezy hosts who deliver will help you secure a site if you're stuck. Always confirm your campground before booking your rental.
gastateparks.org/ReservationsWhat's it like driving an RV around Clarkston and Atlanta?
Metro Atlanta driving is manageable in an RV, especially if you plan around traffic. I-285 (the Perimeter) and I-85 through Clarkston get heavy from about 7 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. weekdays, so aim to drive midday or after 8 p.m. Watch for low clearances on surface streets downtown and stick to interstates with your RV. Surrounding terrain is gently rolling, with no challenging mountain passes until you head north past Dahlonega. Pro tip: nervous about city driving? Book a host who offers RV delivery in Clarkston and skip the metro traffic entirely, you'll be set up before you arrive.
511ga.org/What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Clarkston?
Most campgrounds within an hour of Clarkston offer solid hookups and clean facilities. Stone Mountain Park Campground has full-hookup sites (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), plus dump stations, propane filling, laundry, hot showers, a pool, and Wi-Fi at select sites. Georgia State Parks like Sweetwater Creek and Red Top Mountain typically offer water and 30/50-amp electric, with centralized dump stations and bathhouses. Free or low-cost dump stations are also available at several truck stops along I-20 and I-85. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the campground because rural pull-offs in north Georgia rarely have potable water access.
stonemountainpark.com/things-to-do/stay/campgroundWhat's actually inside the RV I'm renting in Clarkston?
You'll be impressed at how loaded modern RVs are. A typical Class C motorhome rental in Clarkston sleeps 4 to 7 with a queen bed, dinette and sofa conversions, plus an overhead cab bunk. Expect a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, microwave, propane stove, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof AC, furnace, dual house and chassis batteries, and seatbelts for travel. Many rentals include cookware, linens, and outdoor chairs, sometimes as add-ons. Many hosts also offer Wi-Fi hotspots, generators, and outdoor TVs. Pro tip: each RVezy listing shows photos and an amenities checklist, so filter by sleeps count and features (like generator or solar) to match your trip exactly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clarkston,GeorgiaWhat add-ons and options can I get with my RV rental?
Hosts in the Clarkston area offer a great mix of add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include delivery and setup (often priced per mile from the host's location), generator use (often a per-hour rate beyond a free daily allowance), linens and kitchen kits, bike racks, camping chairs, outdoor grills, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in DeKalb or Gwinnett County, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough included. Mileage policies vary by listing (often 100 to 150 free miles per day with extras at a per-mile rate). Pro tip: bundling delivery plus a setup at Stone Mountain Park Campground saves you the towing learning curve completely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Clarkston,GeorgiaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Clarkston, you'll pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card, never directly to the host. Your booking total includes the nightly rate, RVezy service fee, and your selected protection plan. A refundable security deposit (amount set by each listing) is held a few days before pickup and released after a clean return, assuming no damage or extra cleaning. Pro tip: take dated photos and a quick video of the RV inside and out at both pickup and drop-off, it's the easiest way to keep your deposit return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Clarkston?
An RV road trip from Clarkston puts some of the South's best scenery within a day's drive. Head about 95 miles north to Blue Ridge, GA for mountain towns, the Toccoa River, and Mercier Orchards. Drive about 115 miles northwest to Chattanooga for Lookout Mountain and Ruby Falls. Cruise about 165 miles north to Great Smoky Mountains National Park for unbeatable family RV trip memories. Savannah's historic squares and Tybee Island beaches sit about 250 miles southeast, and Charleston, SC is roughly 300 miles east. Local insider tip: take US-76 instead of the interstate from Blue Ridge to Clayton, it's one of Georgia's most underrated scenic drives and easy for first-time RV drivers.
