Campgrounds near Clayton, Georgia
Clayton sits in Rabun County in the northeast Georgia mountains, surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest and several state parks. It is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the southern Blue Ridge, with access to lakes, waterfalls, and hiking within a short drive.
The closest state park campground is Black Rock Mountain State Park, west of Mountain City in Rabun County at an elevation of 3,640 feet, the highest state park in Georgia. The main campground has 44 standard sites for tents and RVs with water and electric hookups, plus 12 walk-in tent sites and 4 backcountry sites, with bear boxes provided at walk-in and backcountry locations. Private RV parks near Clayton include Cross Creek Campground and Cabins, Willow Valley RV Resort, River Campground and Lodge, and River Vista RV Park Mountain Village, which typically offer full-hookup sites and cabin rentals.
Booking systems vary by property. Georgia State Parks reservations run through the state system and can be made well in advance, while the private parks each handle their own bookings directly.
Things to do near Clayton
Tallulah Gorge State Park, about 20 minutes south, is the region's headline attraction. The Hurricane Falls Trail catches outstanding views from the Tallulah Gorge rim before descending to the gorge floor by stair and a suspension bridge, with up-close views of Hurricane Falls as it thunders through the gorge. Permit-holders can access the gorge floor, and seasonal whitewater releases on the Tallulah River draw paddlers in spring and fall.
Rabun County is a waterfall destination. Over 120 waterfalls are documented in Rabun County alone, more than twice the number in any other Georgia county. Nearby Lake Burton, Lake Rabun, and the Chattooga River add swimming, paddling, trout fishing, and whitewater rafting. Anglers can also fish the small lake at Black Rock Mountain State Park, though a valid Georgia fishing license is required.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in the Clayton area. Spring brings wildflowers, high waterfall flow, and moderate temperatures, though rain is frequent. October draws heavy leaf-peeping traffic across the north Georgia mountains, and weekend sites at state parks and popular private resorts fill weeks in advance.
Summer is warm and humid at lower elevations but noticeably cooler on the ridges. At an altitude of 3,640 feet, Black Rock Mountain is often cooler than other Georgia parks, which makes it a popular July and August retreat. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during this stretch.
Winter operations vary. Black Rock Mountain may close temporarily during icy weather, and RVers should be comfortable driving on steep, winding roads. Some private parks near Clayton stay open year-round with reduced services, while higher-elevation and national-forest campgrounds typically close or limit access from late fall through early spring.
How to book a campsite near Clayton
For Black Rock Mountain State Park, reservations are available through ReserveAmerica and the Georgia State Parks website. Reservations can be made up to 13 months ahead for the general public, with Georgia residents able to book 14 months out. Weekends during peak leaf season are the first to sell out.
Private parks near Clayton, including Cross Creek Campground and Cabins, Willow Valley RV Resort, River Campground and Lodge, and River Vista RV Park Mountain Village, are booked directly through each property by phone or website. For summer weekends and October foliage dates, reserve two to three months out where possible.
Before confirming a site, check length and slide-out limits. Due to the mountainous terrain, some parks have access restrictions and winding roads that may not be suitable for larger RVs.
What to expect
Terrain in this region is steep. Access roads to mountain campgrounds include grades and switchbacks that require careful driving with a trailer or motorhome. Reaching Black Rock Mountain State Park requires a steep, winding road with sharp switchbacks, and the narrow access route challenges larger RVs. Confirm turning radius and site pad length before arrival.
Black bears are active throughout the north Georgia mountains. At Black Rock Mountain, bear boxes are provided to protect food at walk-in and backcountry sites. Store food and coolers securely at all campgrounds in the area.
Cell service is inconsistent in the ridges and hollows around Clayton. Download maps offline, expect gravel pads and some unlevel sites at mountain parks, and note that alcohol is prohibited in all Georgia state parks.
