Camping near Covington, Georgia

Covington sits in Newton County along Interstate 20, about 35 miles east of Atlanta in Georgia's Piedmont region. The town is best known as a filming location for several television series, and it works well as a base for RV travelers who want quick highway access to Atlanta while staying in a smaller community surrounded by hardwood forest and rolling farmland. Camping options within roughly 30 minutes of town cover most trip styles. Riverside Estates RV Park and Brooks Lake serve travelers looking for private-park amenities close to the interstate. The Georgia International Horse Park in nearby Conyers offers a full-service RV park situated near the Stable Complex and Walker Arena Complex, originally built for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. For a state-park experience, Hard Labor Creek State Park is located near Rutledge, off I-20 between Madison and Covington, with a separate Equestrian area for guests traveling with horses. Between these options, RV travelers can pick a wooded state-park setting, a large equestrian venue with hookups, or a smaller private park near town.

Things to do around Covington

Hard Labor Creek is the main outdoor draw in the area. The park sits in a wooded setting and features a renowned golf course, a lakeside beach popular for swimming in summer months, and over 24 miles of trails available for hiking and horseback riding. Fishing is popular in the park's two lakes, and boats without gas motors are allowed, while a swimming beach is available in the summer months for cooling off. Closer to Conyers, the Georgia International Horse Park hosted equestrian events during the 1996 Atlanta Centennial Olympic Games and still runs a busy calendar of horse shows, disc golf, and mountain-bike trails. Downtown Covington itself offers walkable historic squares, film-location tours, and easy day trips to Stone Mountain and Atlanta.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV camping around Covington. Daytime temperatures are moderate, humidity is lower than in midsummer, and Piedmont hardwoods put on strong color from late October into November. Weekends in these shoulder seasons book earliest at Hard Labor Creek, so plan ahead. Summer brings hot, humid days with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but it is also when park amenities are in full swing. The lakeside beach is popular with swimmers, and lake-based activities peak between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Sites with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing for air conditioning in July and August. Winter is mild by North American standards, with occasional freezes and cold rain. The campground is open year-round, crowds thin out, and equestrian visitors often prefer this window. Some seasonal amenities scale back, so confirm hours and group-camp availability with the park before making reservations.

Working with Rob was wonderful. We had a medical issue that required a shift in dates and possible postponement and he could not have been more accommodating. We are new to rv travel and he gave thorough walk through, let me record it, and was also very available via text as we had questions on the trip. The rv itself is older, which greatly helped with containing the price and Rob is generous with mileage limits. Despite an older model, everything is clean and in good working order. The beds were very comfortable. We loved getting to try out the rv life and Rob was the perfect host to let us do so.

Perfect size RV with an awesome host! We take a yearly RV camping trip with friends (12 years running). This was my second time renting from Rob and of all the hosts we have used, he is the best!!! Not only is he on top of everything, his RV has everything we need and is so easy to drive. Great experience from start to finish!

How to book campsites near Covington

Georgia state park sites, including standard and equestrian campsites at Hard Labor Creek, are booked through the state's ReserveAmerica-powered system. Reservations at the Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground are available up to 13 months in advance and are highly recommended, since this is a popular place to stay. Tent and pop-up sites are not available to reserve online, so callers need to phone the park directly. The Georgia International Horse Park handles its own RV bookings. Individuals looking to stay overnight who are not associated with an event should contact the park office directly, and guests planning to attend a specific show should coordinate with the event promoter. Private parks such as Riverside Estates RV Park and Brooks Lake take reservations directly. Book early for holiday weekends and any weekend that overlaps a major horse show in Conyers.

What to expect on site

Hookup standards vary by property. Hard Labor Creek is home to 51 campsites, all of which are suitable for RVs under 45 feet in length. Each site has electric hookups plus a picnic table, fire ring, and pet-friendly policy, and 11 of the 51 sites are designated as premium and add water and sewer hookups. Both pull-through and back-in sites are available, and restrooms with showers are on site. The separate equestrian area has 11 pull-through equestrian campsites, each with a gravel parking pad, 30-amp electrical service, and water hookups. The Georgia International Horse Park offers a full-service RV park near the Stable Complex and Walker Arena Complex. Expect a busy, event-driven atmosphere when shows are running, and quieter conditions midweek.
