Campgrounds and RV parks near Deenwood, GA

The Okefenokee Swamp is the main draw. From Stephen C Foster State Park, visitors can join guided pontoon boat tours and rent canoes, kayaks, or jon boats to paddle among cypress knees and Spanish moss. The park is a certified International Dark Sky Park, so clear nights bring dense star views and a visible Milky Way. Wildlife includes alligators, wood storks, herons, black bears, and red-cockaded woodpeckers. Closer to Deenwood, Laura S Walker State Park has a swimming beach, a fishing lake, hiking trails, and boat rentals. The Lakes Golf Course sits on park grounds. Waycross itself offers grocery stores, a Walmart, and chain restaurants for restocking between trips into the swamp.

South Georgia's humid subtropical climate shapes the camping calendar. Late fall through early spring is the most comfortable window for RV travel: daytime highs are mild, humidity drops, and mosquito and biting-fly pressure eases sharply. This is also a strong visibility season for wildlife in the Okefenokee, since lower water levels concentrate alligators and wading birds along accessible waterways. Spring brings warming temperatures, blooming pitcher plants, and heavier weekend demand at both state parks. Summer is hot and wet, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August and the highest monthly rainfall totals of the year. Heat, insects, and storm activity make midday paddling less pleasant, though early mornings remain usable. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and can force temporary closures or evacuations at Stephen C Foster and other low-lying sites. Fire risk in the Okefenokee peaks in dry stretches of late spring and can also trigger closures. Check park status before travel.

Cell service is limited at Stephen C Foster State Park, and the swamp interior has little to no coverage. Wi-Fi at that park is concentrated near the Trading Post and lodge areas, so plan for offline navigation and downloaded maps. Laura S Walker has better connectivity in the campground and visitor center area. Site hookups vary. Laura S Walker offers electric and water with a central dump station rather than full sewer at the site. Stephen C Foster's campground has been renovated with updated RV and tent hookups. Larger rigs should confirm site length with the park before booking. Expect alligators near any water body in this region, including inside campgrounds and along trails. Keep pets leashed, keep children close to water's edge, and store food securely. Insect repellent is essential from spring through fall.
