Camping near Demorest, Georgia
Demorest sits in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Habersham County, about 85 miles northeast of Atlanta and within easy reach of Chattahoochee National Forest, Tallulah Gorge, and the Alpine-themed town of Helen. The town's elevation of roughly 1,345 feet means summer evenings feel a few degrees cooler than nearby Atlanta, an appreciable benefit for RV travelers running rooftop air conditioning.
The surrounding area is heavily oriented around outdoor recreation: hiking, tubing, trout fishing, waterfall viewing, and apple-country agritourism in nearby Cornelia. Private RV parks dominate the immediate vicinity. Yonah Mountain Camping Resort, just south near Cleveland, sits at the base of Yonah Mountain. Grove River Ranch, LLC - Equestrian Center and Retreat is an equestrian-focused property for travelers bringing horses. Creekwood Resort Campground and Cabins, Cherokee Campground, and Leisure Acres Campground round out the local options, all within a short drive of downtown Demorest and the Soque and Chattahoochee Rivers.
Georgia state parks at Tallulah Gorge, Unicoi, and Moccasin Creek add public-land alternatives within an hour's drive.
Things to do around Demorest
Tallulah Gorge State Park is the headline destination, with a two-mile-long, nearly 1,000-foot-deep canyon, a suspension bridge swaying 80 feet above the river, and a permit system that caps gorge-floor hikers at 100 per day. Helen, about 30 minutes west, draws families for tubing the Chattahoochee, Anna Ruby Falls, and Bavarian-style shops. Unicoi State Park offers a lake beach, paddle rentals, and miles of trails. Closer to town, Piedmont University and the Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art on Georgia Street give rainy-day options. Apple orchards along the US-441 and SR-365 corridor in Cornelia ramp up from late August through October. Trout fishing on the Soque River and at Smithgall Woods is popular catch-and-release water. Yonah Mountain itself is a steep, rewarding day hike.

North Georgia has four distinct seasons, and each shifts what makes sense for an RV trip. Spring brings wildflowers, rushing waterfalls, and comfortable highs in the 60s and 70s, but it is also a wet stretch of the year, with frequent thunderstorms by late spring. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon highs near 90 degrees and almost-daily pop-up thunderstorms; campgrounds with shaded sites and pools become important, and most local private parks operate at peak demand from Memorial Day through early August.
Fall is the prime window for many RV travelers. Mid-October typically delivers peak leaf color in the Blue Ridge, and Helen's Oktoberfest pulls heavy traffic and tight reservations through the month. September and early November are quieter shoulder periods with warm days and crisp nights. Winter is mild by national standards but cool, with overnight lows often below freezing in January, the coldest month. Many private parks stay open year-round, but pool and pavilion amenities close, and water hookups can be winterized during cold snaps.
How to book campsites near Demorest
Most campgrounds immediately around Demorest are privately owned and booked directly with the operator by phone or through their websites. Yonah Mountain Camping Resort, Creekwood Resort Campground and Cabins, Cherokee Campground, and Leisure Acres Campground all handle their own reservations; calling ahead is recommended, especially for holiday weekends and during Helen's Oktoberfest. Grove River Ranch, LLC - Equestrian Center and Retreat is reservation-only and oriented toward travelers bringing horses. Georgia state parks in the surrounding area, including Tallulah Gorge, Unicoi, and Moccasin Creek, are booked through the Georgia State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica or by calling 1-800-864-7275. Out-of-state visitors can reserve up to 13 months in advance, and Georgia residents up to 14 months ahead. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles at state parks and is separate from the campsite reservation fee.
What to expect on the ground
The terrain around Demorest is hilly, with winding two-lane roads as the standard approach to most campgrounds. Drivers in larger Class A or fifth-wheel rigs should map their route carefully and avoid shortcuts through mountain backroads. State park campgrounds in the area tend to have smaller, closer-spaced sites with gravel pads, while local private parks lean toward full hookups, pull-throughs, and family amenities such as pools and playgrounds. Cell service is generally reliable in town and along US-441 but drops off quickly in the gorges and forest. Black bears live throughout the surrounding national forest, so food and trash must be stored in vehicles or hard-sided storage. Summer thunderstorms can be intense but brief, and biting insects are most active from May through September.
