Campgrounds and RV parks near Fitzgerald, GA

Downtown Fitzgerald is the main draw. Wild chickens roam the streets and parks of the city and can be spotted at any time of day, a quirk tied to a mid-20th-century wildlife release that never fully took hold as intended. The Blue and Gray Museum occupies a historic railroad depot and tells the story of Fitzgerald's unusual founding by Union and Confederate veterans after the Civil War. Families often add a day trip to General Coffee State Park. The park is known for agricultural history shown at Heritage Farm, with log cabins, a corn crib, tobacco barn, cane mill and other exhibits, and children enjoy seeing the farm animals, which usually include goats, sheep, chickens and pigs. Seventeen-Mile River and a boardwalk wind through cypress swamp where rare and endangered plants grow. Golfers can play the course attached to Wanee Lake Golf Course and RV Park, and Tifton, about 30 minutes west, adds the Georgia Museum of Agriculture and Historic Village to the itinerary.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in Ben Hill County. Daytime highs run comfortable, humidity is manageable, and campgrounds have wider site availability. Spring also brings festival traffic to downtown, including the annual Wild Chicken Festival, so weekends near event dates fill earlier than midweek stays. Summer is hot and humid. July, the hottest month, sees typical highs near 92°F (33°C) and lows around 73°F (23°C). Afternoon thunderstorms are routine, and shaded, full-hookup sites with reliable 50-amp service for air conditioning are the priority for renters traveling in June through August. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, and remnants of tropical systems occasionally track over south Georgia. Winter is mild by North-American standards. January, the coldest month, has typical highs near 59°F (15°C) and lows around 38°F (4°C). Hard freezes happen but are short. Snowbird traffic on I-75 keeps interstate-adjacent parks like Tifton KOA Journey busier from January through March, while smaller in-town parks tend to stay open year-round with easier availability.

The landscape around Fitzgerald is flat pine-and-farmland country, not mountains or coastline. Most local RV parks are compact, level, and easy to navigate with a rental rig, and roads into town are two-lane state highways rather than steep grades. Expect full hookups at private parks like The Trolley Stop RV Park, Georgia Peanut RV Park, and Wanee Lake Golf Course and RV Park, with laundry and Wi-Fi commonly offered. Cell coverage on major carriers is generally solid in and around town. State-park sites at General Coffee tend to be more wooded and quiet, with a mix of pull-through and back-in sites. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV supply runs are easiest in Fitzgerald itself or in Tifton off I-75. Insects are active from late spring through early fall, so screens, bug spray, and awning lights matter. Downtown is compact and walkable, and the wild chickens have the right of way.
