Campgrounds near Franklin, Georgia
Franklin sits in Heard County in west Georgia, on the Chattahoochee River just north of West Point Lake and about an hour and a half southwest of Atlanta. The area is rural, wooded, and shaped by the river and the Corps of Engineers reservoir, which together anchor most of the camping options within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
RV travelers have a mix of state park, private lakefront resort, and family-oriented options nearby. At 2,910 acres, Chattahoochee Bend is one of Georgia's largest state parks, protecting five miles of river frontage. It sits on a wide meander of the Chattahoochee northeast of Franklin and offers pull-through and back-in RV sites, riverfront platform sites, walk-in sites and traditional developed campsites, plus cottages. Highland Marina Resort offers RV pads and cabins on West Point Lake, while 3 Creeks Campground, Banning Mills RV Park, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Bremen round out the closer private options.
Expect wooded, hilly terrain, warm humid summers, and reservoir-driven recreation as the main draws.
Things to do around Franklin
Water is the main event. West Point Lake extends 35 miles along the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama-Georgia state line, and with nearly 26,000 acres of water surface and 525 miles of shoreline it provides excellent opportunities for fishing, camping, hiking, mountain biking, boating, and birding. Abundant largemouth bass, managed under special regulation to maintain a high population, makes West Point Lake an excellent choice for anglers, and the lake also hosts Major League Fishing events, with plentiful spotted bass, striped bass, catfish, crappie, and bream. Highland Marina Resort offers boat and paddlecraft rentals on the lake.
At Chattahoochee Bend State Park, the Riverside Trail offers a 5.5-mile hike along the river, allowing for a potential total hiking distance of up to 11 miles, and an observation platform provides nice views of the river and forest. A boat ramp gives paddlers direct river access. Families staying at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Bremen typically build days around on-site pools, splash areas, and character programming.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in west Georgia. From March through May and again from September into November, daytime temperatures generally sit in the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit, hardwoods and wildflowers show along the Chattahoochee, and both state park and lakefront sites book heavily on weekends.
Summer brings hot, humid conditions with highs near 90 degrees Fahrenheit in July and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The river and West Point Lake stay busy through the season, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day carry the peak booking pressure of the year. Bring shade, insect protection, and expect thunderstorm delays.
Winter is short, cool, and damp rather than harsh. LaGrange usually has the most precipitation in February, August and December, so plan for muddy sites and pack rain gear. Chattahoochee Bend State Park and most private parks around Franklin remain open year-round, with lower crowds and lower demand from December through February.

How to book near Franklin
Chattahoochee Bend State Park is reserved through the Georgia State Parks system. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance. Georgia residents may make reservations up to 14 months in advance. The campsite has 37 RV-friendly sites spread across two loops. Most offer 30- and 50-amp electric hookups and water hookups. There are also several host campsites that offer full hookups, which include electric, water, and sewer connections. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles. ParkPasses are not included in reservations fees and may be purchased at the Visitor Center at check-in. Overnight guests pay only one night parking fee for the duration of their stay.
Highland Marina Resort, 3 Creeks Campground, Banning Mills RV Park, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Bremen are booked directly through each property. For spring and fall weekends, and any summer holiday, reserve 8 to 12 weeks ahead. Some unreserved campsites may still be available on a first-come, first-served basis at Chattahoochee Bend, but with only 37 RV and trailer spots, reservations are advised, especially during the busiest times of year.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Franklin skew wooded and shaded. All Chattahoochee Bend campsites are pet-friendly, and most can accommodate RVs up to 40 feet long, with a fire pit, grill, and picnic table provided at each site. The park has central showers, restrooms, and a dump station on site.
Cell service is patchy in the river bottoms and around parts of West Point Lake, so download maps and confirmations in advance. Summers are humid with active mosquitoes near the water, so screens and repellent matter. Bring a leveling kit for the older lakefront properties, and expect a rural feel: grocery runs and full-service fuel stops are generally back in LaGrange, Newnan, or Bremen rather than in Franklin itself.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Franklin%2C%20GeorgiaDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Franklin, GA?

RVezy makes it low-risk to book your motorhome rental in Franklin. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in dates without stress. Estimate your total mileage upfront so you can pick the policy that saves the most.

weather.gov/ffc/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Franklin?
You have got this, and Franklin is one of the easier places to learn. Rural highways like US-27 and GA-100 are wide, lightly trafficked, and free of the steep mountain passes you would find further north. Every RVezy host does a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, slide-outs, water, propane, and dumping, so you leave knowing how everything works. Many first-time renters in Franklin also choose delivery so the host handles parking and setup at your campsite. Take a short practice drive in town before heading to West Point Lake, and remember your host is just a text away the entire trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are covered. Every RV rental in Franklin, GA booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Highway 34 or a dead battery at R. Shaefer Heard Campground is just a phone call away from help. Your host is also your first line of support and can usually troubleshoot small issues like a tripped breaker or finicky water pump over text. The RVezy support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the driveway for instant peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are popular road trip routes from Franklin, GA?

Top routes: head 70 miles east to Atlanta for city sights and Stone Mountain Park; drive 110 miles northeast to Helen and Unicoi State Park for Bavarian charm and mountain hiking; cruise about 45 miles south to Callaway Resort and FDR State Park on Pine Mountain; venture roughly 250 miles southeast to Savannah's historic squares; or cross into Alabama just 25 miles west to Cheaha State Park, the state's highest point. exploregeorgia.org/things-to-do/road-tripsWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I plan for?
Realistic numbers help you plan smart. Travel trailers do not burn fuel themselves, but the tow vehicle will average 10 to 14 MPG when towing. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A coaches average 7 to 10 MPG. Gas prices in West Georgia tend to track near or slightly below the national average. Check current Georgia gas prices on the U.S. EIA site before your trip. For a 4-night Franklin RV trip with about 300 miles of driving in a Class C, budget roughly $100 to $150 for fuel at current prices. Fill up in Franklin or LaGrange before heading to remote lake campgrounds where stations are scarce.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Franklin?
For the best lakefront spots, plan ahead. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds like R. Shaefer Heard and Whitetail Ridge on West Point Lake book through Recreation.gov and open reservations 6 months in advance; popular summer weekends and holidays (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often fill within hours. Chattahoochee Bend State Park reserves through GeorgiaStateParks.org, also up to 13 months out for Georgia residents. For spontaneous trips, aim for Sunday-through-Thursday arrivals when even prime lakefront sites are often available, and ask your RVezy host if they have a favorite first-come, first-served spot they recommend.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2725What are the local driving conditions like around Franklin?
Driving around Franklin is refreshingly low-stress. The town sits on US-27, a wide federal highway, with GA-34 and GA-100 connecting to I-85 just east of town. Roads are mostly flat to gently rolling through pine forest and farmland, with no tight switchbacks. Watch for occasional deer at dawn and dusk, slow-moving farm equipment on rural stretches, and brief but heavy thunderstorms on summer afternoons that can flood low spots near the Chattahoochee. Cell coverage is solid in town and along I-85 but thins out at remote Corps of Engineers campgrounds. Download offline maps before you leave Franklin so you are never guessing at a backroad turnoff toward West Point Lake.

Here is the local secret: most visitors head to the southern end of West Point Lake near the dam, but the headwaters near Franklin are where the crappie and bass fishing actually shine, and the crowds are smaller. Launch from a public ramp early, then stroll the paved Old Town Chattahoochee Greenway Trail along the river. Grab lunch in downtown Franklin (a small, friendly community), then catch sunset back at your campsite. Weekday camping at R. Shaefer Heard often comes with bald eagle sightings and lakefront sites you would never snag on a Saturday.
