Campgrounds and RV parks near Gibson, GA

Hamburg State Park sits on the 225-acre Hamburg Lake, which is the main draw for anglers and paddlers near Gibson. Fishing targets include largemouth bass, crappie and bream, and the park has boat ramps and a fishing pier. The park offers a boat ramp and rental facility for pedal boats, surf bikes, fishing boats, and electric motors, and private boats are permitted on Hamburg Lake with a 10-horsepower limit. On land, the park is home to a 1921 water-powered grist mill still operating today, along with a museum of antique agricultural tools and appliances used in rural Georgia. Wildlife watchers routinely see turtles, alligators, raccoons, deer, and birds along the lake edge. Day trips reach Clarks Hill Lake to the northeast for larger-water boating, and Augusta for restaurants, riverwalk paths, and family attractions.

Central Georgia has a humid subtropical climate, so the RV season effectively runs year-round, but conditions vary sharply. Spring, from mid-March through May, is often the sweet spot: comfortable daytime temperatures, moderate humidity, and generally reliable conditions on the water. This also lines up with the main operating season at Hamburg State Park's campground. Summer is hot and muggy, with July averaging highs near 91°F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Lake fishing and paddling shift to early morning to beat the heat. Late summer into early fall also carries residual tropical-storm risk from systems tracking inland from the Atlantic or Gulf, which can bring heavy rain and short-notice closures. Fall, roughly October into mid-November, brings cooler nights, lower humidity, and reliable dry stretches, and it is often the best all-around RV window. Winters are mild, with hot humid summers and mild winters, and temperatures ranging from around 39°F in winter to 91°F in summer; hard freezes are uncommon.

Roads into Gibson and the surrounding campgrounds are two-lane rural highways and county roads. They are generally in good condition and easy to tow on, though shoulders are narrow and night driving means watching for deer. Fuel and grocery runs are easier from Sandersville or Wrens than from Gibson itself. Hamburg State Park's campground provides hot showers, water and electric hookups, and a dump station, but no sewer at the site. The RV length limit in the campground is 40 feet. Private parks in the area are more likely to offer 50-amp full hookups and longer pads suited to larger rigs. Expect thick pine and hardwood cover at most sites, which helps in summer heat but can limit satellite reception and solar. The Hamburg campground has one centrally located bathhouse serving all sites, which is worth planning around with kids.
