Campgrounds near Gordon, Georgia
Gordon sits in Wilkinson County in middle Georgia, east of Macon and within reach of Milledgeville, Juliette, and the lakes of the Oconee and Ocmulgee River basins. RV travelers passing through the area have a small but useful mix of options: private full-hookup parks, a state-managed lakeside campground, and marina-style parks on Lake Sinclair.
The closest full-service RV base is Scenic Mountain RV Resort, a 112-acre property in the hills south of Milledgeville with paved roads, gravel sites, and full hookups. Little River Park Campground and Marina sits on Lake Sinclair between Eatonton and Milledgeville off Highway 441 and caters heavily to boaters and bass tournaments. 4 County RV Park and Camp Ground and the Shrine Park provide smaller, quieter alternatives nearby.
For a state-park experience, Dames Ferry Park on Lake Juliette is a drive west and is managed under the Georgia State Parks system through nearby High Falls State Park, giving it a different reservation process and fee structure than the private parks.
Things to do near Gordon
Water recreation dominates the region. Lake Sinclair, accessible from Little River Park Campground and Marina, is a popular bass-fishing reservoir with multiple public ramps and marinas along Highway 441, and Little River hosts frequent weekend fishing tournaments. Lake Juliette, reached from Dames Ferry Park, is a clear 3,600-acre reservoir with a 25-horsepower motor limit that keeps the water calm for kayaks, paddleboards, and swimmers.
On land, families can explore the Oconee River Greenway in Milledgeville, tour the antebellum downtown, or fish stocked ponds and walk short trails at Scenic Mountain RV Resort. The tiny town of Juliette, made famous by the film Fried Green Tomatoes, sits minutes from Dames Ferry and makes an easy half-day outing. High Falls State Park, farther west, adds waterfall hikes and a larger day-use area.

Middle Georgia has a humid subtropical climate, so the camping season effectively runs year-round, but conditions shift sharply by season. Spring is the strongest overall window: mild days, blooming dogwoods, and prime bass fishing on Lake Sinclair and Lake Juliette. Weekends from March through May tend to fill first at the state-managed sites, so reserve early.
Summer brings heat, high humidity, and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms. July is typically the wettest and hottest month. Lake sites are in demand for swimming and boating, and shaded sites go quickly. Note that many sites at Dames Ferry are fully exposed, so sun exposure through summer can be intense.
Fall cools off gradually and is a favorite among RV travelers for lower humidity and thinner crowds. Winter is mild by North American standards, with occasional freezes and rare snow. Scenic Mountain RV Resort operates year-round, and Dames Ferry is listed by Georgia State Parks as open year-round through its High Falls management office.

Rob is fantastic. His trailer is even better. Easy to “work with”. The couch is very nice. The kitchen is a wee small if you are used to a giant one. Made a full course meal for 10 in it. Took a little juggling. Bed was comfy. Tons of pillows.

Great RV for a weekend trip! It was plenty of room for 6 adults, and it was easy to get in touch with Rob if we needed anything.

Very nice camper. We used it for something that it was not intended to be used for and it fit our purpose exactly.

How to book campgrounds near Gordon
Reservation systems vary by campground type. Dames Ferry Park is managed by High Falls State Park within the Georgia State Parks system, and site-specific reservations can be booked at GaStateParks.org or by phone up to 13 months in advance. A daily ParkPass is required for each vehicle in addition to the site fee.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Scenic Mountain RV Resort accepts daily, weekly, and monthly stays and can be booked directly through the resort. Little River Park Campground and Marina takes reservations by phone through its own office and is Lake Sinclair's bass-tournament headquarters, so tournament weekends fill fast.
For summer weekends, holiday weekends, and tournament dates on Lake Sinclair, book several weeks ahead. Waterfront and pull-through sites go first at every park in the area.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a rural, wooded setting with red-clay soil, pine and hardwood cover, and rolling terrain rather than mountains. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Milledgeville and along I-75, but can weaken at lake sites tucked into coves. Most parks in the area accommodate mid-size and large rigs; Scenic Mountain RV Resort advertises pull-through sites for rigs up to 90 feet, while Dames Ferry has tighter turnarounds on its lakeside loops.
Insects are a real factor from late spring through early fall, so pack repellent and check for ticks after hikes. Summer thunderstorms can be intense and brief, and lake levels on Sinclair fluctuate with Georgia Power operations. Grocery, fuel, and pharmacy stops are easiest in Milledgeville, Gray, or Macon.
