Gray camping overview
Gray sits in Jones County in central Georgia, roughly 15 miles northeast of Macon and within easy reach of the Ocmulgee River, Lake Juliette, and Lake Sinclair. The area gives RV travelers a base for exploring middle Georgia without the traffic of Atlanta, and most nearby campgrounds are reachable within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Campground options range from state-managed lakefront sites to full-service private resorts. Dames Ferry Park is the only campground on 3,600-acre Lake Juliette and is operated by nearby High Falls State Park. Scenic Mountain RV Resort sits south of Milledgeville on a 112-acre property with paved roads and full hookups, and Little River Park Campground and Marina fronts Lake Sinclair with a mix of waterfront back-in and interior pull-through RV sites.
Closer to Macon, the Shrine Park offers RV pull-through sites with hookups, and L and D RV Park near Forsyth provides a straightforward stop off I-75 with full hookups and a pool.
Things to do around Gray
Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Juliette allows boating with a 25-horsepower motor limit, along with fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, bream, redear, and perch. Lake Sinclair is larger and open to unrestricted boating, with bass tournaments running out of Little River Park on many weekends.
History and small-town stops fill out an itinerary. The town of Juliette, made famous by the film Fried Green Tomatoes, is minutes from Dames Ferry Park, and Jarrell Plantation State Historic Site is close by. In Macon, families can visit Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park and the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Milledgeville adds the Oconee River Greenway, Lockerly Arboretum, and historic downtown walking routes.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in central Georgia. From March through May, daytime highs climb from the 60s into the 80s with generally clear skies, and October and November bring dry, mild afternoons that pair well with lakeside sites. These shoulder seasons are the busiest for weekend bookings at Dames Ferry Park and the Lake Sinclair campgrounds.
Summer runs hot and humid. July and August highs sit near 90 degrees with afternoon thunderstorms common, and July is typically the wettest month. Shaded sites fill first, and pools at Scenic Mountain RV Resort and L and D RV Park see heavy use.
Winter is mild but damp. Lows in January and February hover in the mid-30s, hard freezes are brief, and snow is rare. Private parks stay open year-round, and Dames Ferry Park also operates through winter, though bathhouse conditions and site availability can vary.
How to book near Gray
Reservation systems differ by campground type. Dames Ferry Park is a Georgia State Parks property managed by High Falls State Park, and reservations are booked through the Georgia State Parks system up to 13 months in advance. Sites are booked site-specifically, and a two-night minimum typically applies on weekends.
Private parks handle bookings directly. Scenic Mountain RV Resort takes reservations by phone or through its website and offers daily, weekly, and monthly stays. Little River Park Campground and Marina books through its own office, and lakefront sites are often held by long-term residents, so interior pull-through sites are the more reliable option for short visits.
For weekend trips in spring and fall, book six to eight weeks ahead. Weekday stays year-round are usually available on shorter notice.
What to expect on-site
Hookups and site layouts vary. Dames Ferry Park offers water and 30/50-amp electric at all sites with a dump station on-site but no sewer hookups, and roughly 90 percent of sites are on the Lake Juliette shoreline. Cell service is generally usable but can be spotty in parts of the loop.
Scenic Mountain RV Resort provides full hookups with 20/30/50-amp service, paved roads, a saltwater pool, a laundry, six stocked fishing ponds, and nature trails, and it accepts big rigs up to 90 feet. Little River Park has 130 full-hookup RV sites with 30/50-amp service and cable TV, a marina with boat ramps, wet slips, a camp store, and a bait and tackle shop.
The Shrine Park runs on a simpler model with pull-through sites and laundry. L and D RV Park is small, RV-only, and best treated as a clean interstate overnight stop with a pool and full hookups.
