Campgrounds near Hamilton, Georgia
Hamilton sits in Harris County in west Georgia, on the southern flank of the Pine Mountain ridge and within easy driving distance of Columbus, Callaway Gardens, and Warm Springs. The area is anchored by F.D. Roosevelt State Park, at 9,049 acres Georgia's largest state park, with more than 40 miles of trails including the 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail, which draws RV travelers year round.
Named campgrounds close to Hamilton include FD Roosevelt State Park inside the park itself, Pine Mountain RV Resort just north near Callaway Gardens, and Blanton Creek Park Georgia Power on Lake Harding to the west. Lake Pines Campground and RV Park and Happy Trails Homestead round out the nearby options, giving travelers a mix of state park, utility-managed, and private-resort settings.
The terrain here is rolling hardwood and pine forest rather than flat coastal plain, and in Columbus, the summers are long, hot, and muggy; the winters are short, cold, and wet; and it is partly cloudy year round, which shapes how families plan their trips.
Things to do near Hamilton
Hiking is the headline activity. The popular 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail winds through hardwood and pines, over creeks and past small waterfalls, with shorter loops and connector trails suitable for kids and day hikers. Above King's Gap is Dowdell's Knob, where President Franklin D. Roosevelt sometimes picnicked, and a life-size sculpture of the president now welcomes visitors to the overlook.
Water recreation centers on the Georgia Power lakes and small park lakes. Visitors can rent kayaks, canoes, and jon boats at the park and have some aquatic fun on Lake Delanor, and there is a fishing dock where anglers are known to catch largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish from the shore. Families also gravitate to Callaway Gardens for gardens, trails, and Robin Lake Beach, and to Wild Animal Safari in Pine Mountain for a drive-through animal park. Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site in nearby Warm Springs adds a rainy-day option for history-focused trips.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Hamilton. Daytime highs sit in a comfortable range, humidity is lower, and campgrounds are open across the board. Wildflowers along Pine Mountain and azaleas at Callaway Gardens peak in mid-spring, and the park has been named as one of Georgia's best state parks for leaf peeping, with November often considered a peak time to see the changing leaves.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, but it is also when family demand is highest, so lakefront sites at Blanton Creek Park Georgia Power and shaded loops at FD Roosevelt State Park book out earliest. Blanton Creek Park Georgia Power is open from March 1 to October 31, so it is not a winter option.
Winter is quieter and cooler, with occasional freezes. Georgia Power periodically conducts a lake drawdown on Lake Harding, where Blanton Creek Campground is located, which can affect boat ramps and shoreline access, so verify lake levels before booking a water-focused trip.

How to reserve a site
State park sites at FD Roosevelt State Park are booked through the Georgia State Parks reservation system. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance, online or by calling 1-800-864-7275, and Georgia residents can book accommodations 14 months in advance, one month earlier than out-of-state visitors. A 50% deposit is required to confirm a reservation in advance, with the remaining balance due at check-in, and reservations booked 14 days or fewer in advance require full payment at time of booking.
Blanton Creek Park Georgia Power is reserved through the Georgia Power lakes reservation portal at reservations.gplakes.com. Pine Mountain RV Resort books through its own site, and Lake Pines Campground and RV Park and Happy Trails Homestead each maintain their own reservation channels. Holiday weekends and the Callaway Gardens Fantasy in Lights window in late fall fill fastest, so lock in dates early.
What to expect on arrival
Site formats vary by property. The FD Roosevelt campground offers 140 campsites and a bathhouse with hot showers, with some sites overlooking the lake and others nestled among pines and hardwoods. Big rigs should confirm site length when booking.
Blanton Creek offers campgrounds and primitive campsites, with amenities including a playground, boat ramps, fishing piers, laundry facilities, restrooms, hot showers and a dump station. Campsites 9, 24, 25, 26, 28, 37, 39, 44, 45, 46 and 47 have asphalt pads where tent stakes are not allowed, which matters for travelers planning to add a screen tent. Pine Mountain RV Resort skews toward a resort experience and is a short drive from Callaway Gardens, while Lake Pines and Happy Trails Homestead offer smaller, privately run settings.
