Camping near Hazlehurst, Georgia
Hazlehurst sits in Jeff Davis County in south-central Georgia, surrounded by longleaf pine forest, pecan groves, and the Ocmulgee and Altamaha river corridors. The area draws RV travelers looking for quiet, small-town stops between Macon and the Georgia coast, and it works well as a base for exploring nearby state parks, farm country, and blackwater rivers.
RV options within roughly an hour of town range from small private parks to full-service state park campgrounds. JB's RV Park and Pecans & Pines RV Park cover practical highway stops with hookups, while Hidden Forest RV Club offers a more tucked-away setting. For families who want more to do on site, Little Ocmulgee State Park and Lodge adds a 265-acre setting with lakeside camping, and the Equestrian - General Coffee State Park sites add horse-friendly infrastructure and access to Heritage Farm exhibits.
Most visitors come for slower-paced outdoor time: fishing, paddling, birding, and easy hikes through cypress swamp and pine flatwoods. Traffic is light, roads are generally flat, and larger rigs can navigate the area without difficulty.
Things to do around Hazlehurst
Little Ocmulgee State Park and Lodge is the biggest draw for families. The park centers on a lake with bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish fishing, kayaking and canoeing, plus the Wallace Adams Championship Golf Course, a swimming pool, splash pad, and the 2.6-mile Oak Ridge Trail Loop. Kids gravitate to the lakeside playgrounds and splash pad in warmer months.
At General Coffee State Park, near Douglas, the Heritage Farm exhibit features log cabins, a corn crib, tobacco barn, and cane mill, and children can feed goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, and donkeys. A boardwalk winds through cypress swamp along the Seventeen-Mile River. Horse owners can trailer in and use 13.4 miles of equestrian trails, though stables are not provided.
Closer to Hazlehurst, the Ocmulgee and Altamaha rivers offer bass and bream fishing, and small county parks provide boat ramps. Baxley, Alma, and McRae-Helena add local diners, produce stands, and hardware stores useful for a longer stay.

South-central Georgia has a humid subtropical climate with short, mild winters and long, hot summers. Winter daytime highs in the Hazlehurst area typically sit in the upper 50s Fahrenheit, and hard freezes are brief, which keeps most private RV parks open year-round. State park campgrounds also take reservations year-round, and winter is a quiet, comfortable time for tent and RV camping under Spanish moss.
Spring is the strongest all-around season. Wildflowers bloom in the wiregrass and longleaf pine communities at General Coffee, bass and crappie fishing picks up at Little Ocmulgee, and daytime temperatures are warm without being oppressive. Reserve early for spring weekends; state park sites fill quickly.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and near-daily afternoon thunderstorms, along with heavy mosquito and biting-insect activity in swampy areas. Splash pads, pools, and shaded lake sites are the main draw for families. Late summer and early fall overlap with the Atlantic hurricane season, and remnant tropical systems can bring several days of heavy rain to interior Georgia.
How to book campgrounds near Hazlehurst
Georgia State Parks, including Little Ocmulgee State Park and Lodge and the Equestrian - General Coffee State Park sites, are reserved through the Georgia State Parks reservation system online or by phone. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance, and Georgia residents may make reservations up to 14 months in advance. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles and is not included in the reservation fee. A 50 percent deposit is required to confirm a reservation in advance, with the remaining balance due at check-in, and reservations booked 14 days or fewer in advance require full payment at booking.
Private parks in the area, including JB's RV Park, Pecans & Pines RV Park, and Hidden Forest RV Club, are booked directly with the campground by phone, through their websites, or via partner booking platforms. For spring weekends, holidays, and any event weekend in nearby towns, book several weeks ahead to secure a full-hookup pull-through site.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat, wooded terrain with tall pines, hardwoods, and Spanish moss. Sites at Little Ocmulgee are shaded and can be closely spaced with minimal barriers between them, and uneven terrain means some spots require leveling boards. The forested campground accommodates RVs up to 50 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer connections. General Coffee's equestrian sites offer 30/50-amp electrical hookups with a shared public water spigot rather than site water, and stables are not provided.
Private parks in the area tend to be smaller, quieter, and rural, with full hookups, gravel or grass pads, and easy big-rig access. Cell coverage is generally reliable on major carriers along US 341 and US 221. Bring bug spray from late spring through early fall, and watch for ants and the occasional snake in wooded sites.
