Camping near Helen, Georgia
Helen sits in the North Georgia mountains along the Chattahoochee River, about 90 minutes north of Atlanta. The small Bavarian-themed town is surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest and serves as a base for tubing, waterfall hikes, and Oktoberfest travel. RV renters have several campgrounds within a short drive, from state park sites to private resorts with full hookups.
Unicoi State Park And Lodge is the closest large public campground, located about two miles from downtown Helen inside the Chattahoochee National Forest boundary. The park has nearly 100 campsites, including 30-foot and 40-foot RV pads, along with a lake, a swim beach, hiking trails, and a lodge and restaurant. Private options nearby include Unicoi Springs RV Resort, Cherokee Campground, Creekwood Resort Campground and Cabins, and Yonah Mountain Camping Resort a bit further south.
Most sites in the area are gravel or paved pull-throughs and back-ins on rolling terrain, and roads leading to downtown Helen are narrow and can get congested during festival weekends.
Things to do near Helen
Tubing the Chattahoochee River is the signature summer activity, typically running between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with local outfitters running shuttles from downtown. Families also visit the Georgia Mountain Coaster, Nora Mill Granary, and Anna Ruby Falls, a twin waterfall reached by a paved trail managed by the U.S. Forest Service.
At Unicoi State Park, guests can hike a short lake loop, fish the stocked lake for bass, bream, and catfish, ride the mountain-bike singletrack, or take the roughly three-mile trail from the campground into downtown Helen. The park also offers zip lining, archery, paddle boarding, and boat rentals.
Day trips include Yonah Mountain Vineyards, Hardman Farm State Historic Site, the Nacoochee Indian Mound, and the Appalachian Trail crossing at Unicoi Gap.

Fall is the busiest season by a wide margin. Helen's Oktoberfest is the longest-running Oktoberfest in the United States and typically stretches from early September through early November, drawing large crowds each weekend. Peak weekends center on October, when leaf color starts to turn. Campgrounds within driving distance often sell out months in advance for October Saturdays.
Summer is the tubing season, roughly Memorial Day through Labor Day, with warm days in the mid-80s and afternoon thunderstorms common. Water temperatures on the commercial tubing stretch typically run in the 60s. Spring brings mild weather, waterfall flow, and lighter crowds from March through May.
Winter is the quietest camping season. Downtown Helen decorates heavily for Christmas, but overnight lows can drop below freezing and some private campgrounds reduce services or close loops in January and February.
How to book a campground near Helen
Unicoi State Park And Lodge is reserved through the Georgia State Parks system. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance online or by calling 1-800-864-7275, and Georgia residents can book up to 14 months out. A 50 percent deposit is required to confirm a reservation booked 15 or more days out, with the balance due at check-in; bookings inside 14 days require payment in full. A ParkPass is required for every vehicle and is not included in the site fee.
Private campgrounds such as Unicoi Springs RV Resort, Yonah Mountain Camping Resort, Cherokee Campground, and Creekwood Resort Campground and Cabins are booked directly through each property. For Oktoberfest weekends, plan to book six to nine months ahead.
What to expect on-site
Roads to Helen follow narrow, winding mountain highways, and GA-75 through downtown backs up on festival weekends. RV renters should plan arrival before Friday afternoon during peak season and avoid parking on the shoulder of GA-75.
At Unicoi State Park, powered sites accept tents, trailers, and RVs, and comfort stations with restrooms and showers are placed throughout the loops. Some pull-ins are tight and gravel, and larger rigs generally do best on the full-hookup loop. Tent-only areas are walk-in.
Cell service is spotty once inside the national forest, but downtown Helen has Wi-Fi at most cafes. Black bears are active in the area, so food and trash must be stored in the RV or a hard-sided container overnight.

The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout based on how much peace of mind you want. While it isn't traditional auto insurance, it provides meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on a winding mountain road near Unicoi Gap or Brasstown Bald. gastateparks.org/UnicoiWhen is the best time for an RV trip to Helen, GA?

Spring brings rhododendron blooms and the start of Chattahoochee River tubing season, with daytime highs typically in the low 70s F. Fall is legendary: Helen's Oktoberfest runs from September into early November, and leaf color peaks mid-to-late October with crisp 60 to 70 F days. Summer (highs in the mid 80s F) is great for tubing but busy. Winter is mild with daytime highs around 50 F, occasional light snow, and far fewer crowds. Pro tip: book a weekday October stay for cooler weather, full Oktoberfest vibes, and lower campground rates.
weather.gov/ffc/I've never driven an RV. Is Helen, GA a good place to start?
Helen is one of the friendliest spots in the Southeast for a first-time RV trip. The drive in from Atlanta is mostly highway (I-985 to GA-365 to GA-75), with just the last 20 minutes on a gently winding mountain road. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering propane, water, slide-outs, and dumping, and RVezy's 24/7 support is one tap away. If you're nervous, choose Delivery and skip driving the RV entirely until checkout day. Pro tip: pick a campervan or small Class C (under 25 feet) for your first trip; they handle like a large van and fit easily into Unicoi State Park and Cherokee Campground sites.
dot.ga.gov/What happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, fuel delivery, and towing if needed anywhere in the Helen area or along your route. One phone call gets a technician dispatched, often quickly in populated corridors like GA-75 and US-23/441. Your host is also reachable directly through the RVezy app for quick questions about systems like the awning, generator, or slide-outs, so small hiccups rarely slow your trip down.

You're less than 30 miles from the North Carolina border and about 90 miles from Tennessee and South Carolina, making multi-state RV road trips from Helen easy to plan. Popular routes include the Blue Ridge Parkway up to Asheville, NC, the Great Smoky Mountains loop through Cherokee, NC and Gatlinburg, TN, and a Lowcountry run down to Charleston, SC. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed with host approval, but travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental due to insurance coverage. Pro tip: message the host before booking with your route, most are happy to confirm and may share favorite stops along the way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Helen, GA RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest trip cost after the rental itself, and Georgia gas prices typically run below the national average. Expect roughly 8 to 10 mpg for a Class C, 6 to 8 mpg for a Class A, 12 to 18 mpg for a campervan, and 10 to 14 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer. A 250-mile weekend loop around the North Georgia mountains in a Class C usually runs around $90 to $125 in fuel at current prices. Pro tip: fill up in Cleveland or Cornelia before heading into Helen, prices in the village itself can run noticeably higher per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Helen, GA?
For peak season (October weekends, Oktoberfest, and holiday weeks) book 6 to 12 months ahead. Georgia State Parks open reservations up to 13 months in advance and Unicoi State Park's lakeside RV sites are the first to go. For summer weekends, 2 to 3 months ahead is usually safe. Spring and winter midweek you can often grab a site a week or two out. Book Unicoi through the Georgia State Parks reservation system, use Recreation.gov for Chattahoochee National Forest sites like Andrews Cove, and call privately owned parks like Cherokee Campground or Jenny's Creek directly. Pro tip: if Unicoi is full, check for cancellations 7 to 14 days before your dates, last-minute openings appear daily.
gastateparks.org/ReservationsWhat are driving conditions like around Helen, GA?
Driving in and around Helen is mostly easy, with one fun twist: the mountain roads. GA-75, GA-17, and GA-348 (the Richard Russell Scenic Highway) feature tight curves, steep grades, and switchbacks, beautiful but slower in an RV. Plan on 25 to 35 mph through curves and use lower gears on descents to save your brakes. Weather is usually mild, but summer thunderstorms roll in fast and winter can bring brief icy patches on shaded mountain bends. The village itself has narrow alpine-style streets, so park at your campground and walk or use the local trolley. Pro tip: avoid GA-75 northbound on Saturday mornings in October, traffic into Helen can crawl, leave early or arrive Friday.
511ga.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Helen offer?
Campgrounds near Helen are well-equipped for any RV rental. Unicoi State Park offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer) at most RV sites, a dump station, potable water fills, hot showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi near the lodge. Cherokee Campground has full hookups plus a pool and is walking distance to downtown Helen. Andrews Cove (US Forest Service) is more rustic, with no hookups but a central water spigot and vault toilets, perfect for self-contained campervans. For dumping and freshwater fills mid-trip, Unicoi State Park's dump station is open to non-guests for a small fee. Pro tip: ask your host to top off freshwater before delivery so you can settle in immediately without hunting for a fill station.
gastateparks.org/UnicoiWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Helen, GA?
Most motorhome rental Helen listings come fully equipped so you can roll in and start your trip. Expect a queen or king bed, a convertible dinette or bunks (Class C motorhomes typically sleep 5 to 7), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink, and basic cookware, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, and a furnace for cool mountain nights. Many include a TV, awning, outdoor camp chairs, and seatbelts for every traveler. Wi-Fi and generators vary by listing, so check the amenities section. Pro tip: October nights in Helen can dip near 40 F, so confirm the RV has a working furnace or propane heater and ask the host to demo it during your pickup walkthrough.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for Helen RV rentals?
RVezy hosts in the Helen area offer a range of add-ons to customize your trip: linens and towel packages, kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and grills, bike racks, generators, fishing gear, tubing equipment, and stocked propane tanks. Pickup is usually from the host's home base in or near Helen, Cleveland, Sautee Nacoochee, or Gainesville, or you can request delivery directly to your campground. Mileage policies vary by listing (often 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extras priced per mile), and some hosts offer unlimited mileage for an upcharge. Pro tip: bundle linens plus a tubing add-on so you can skip a store run and start floating the Chattahoochee within an hour of pickup.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Helen%2C%20GAHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy directly (never to the host in cash) using a credit or debit card at checkout. Your total includes the nightly rate, cleaning fee, chosen protection plan, taxes, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before the trip starts, with the amount set per listing, and released after a clean return. To avoid any deposit issues on your Helen RV trip, do a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff, dump tanks before return, and refuel to the level noted on the agreement. Pro tip: a clean RV inside and out is the single biggest factor in getting your full deposit back fast.
