Campgrounds near Heron Bay
Heron Bay sits in south metro Atlanta, within a short drive of two of Georgia's oldest state parks and several private RV parks that cater to travelers along the I-75 corridor. The area works well as a base for weekend trips, race weekends at nearby motorsports venues, or an overnight stop between Atlanta and Macon.
Closest options include Atlanta Motor Speedway, which opens its infield and outer lots to RVs around race events, and Atlanta South RV Resort, a full-hookup private park geared to longer stays. Farther south, High Falls RV Park and Tiny Home Community offers hookups near the falls, while River - High Falls State Park and Indian Springs State Park provide state-run sites with lake and river access.
Indian Springs sits conveniently near I-75 in middle Georgia and is one of the oldest state parks in the United States, making it a practical and historic anchor point for trip planning.
Things to do near Heron Bay
Water recreation drives most trips. High Falls State Park offers boat rentals, ramps, and fishing docks with access to a lake known for hybrid and white bass fishing, and visitors can hike along the river's edge and through hilly forest to the remains of an old hydroelectric power plant foundation.
At Indian Springs, the 105-acre McIntosh Lake anchors the recreation with fishing, boating, and a sandy beach for swimming. A trail connects the park to nearby Dauset Trails, adding mileage for hikers and cyclists. Families can also sample the spring water flowing inside the stone Spring House built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, visit the seasonal museum, or make the short drive to Atlanta Motor Speedway for race events and driving experiences.

Indian Springs State Park is open for camping year-round, and the most popular time to visit is spring and summer, which is the best time for swimming and boating in the lake, so reservations during that period should be booked well ahead. Spring is the sweet spot with mid-60s to low-80s during the day and 50s to low-60s at night, trails and lake edges bloom with dogwood and wildflowers, fish move shallow so fishing and boating pick up, and bugs and humidity are lower than in summer.
Summer hits 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit with Georgia humidity, and most people stick to the lake or creek to cool off. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, so shaded sites fill first.
Fall brings turning leaves in rich reds and golds, and cooler nights make evenings around the fire more comfortable. Winter days are mild around the mid-50s, but nights drop to the low 40s, and heated bathhouses at Indian Springs keep the park usable through the cold months.

Working with Rob was wonderful. We had a medical issue that required a shift in dates and possible postponement and he could not have been more accommodating. We are new to rv travel and he gave thorough walk through, let me record it, and was also very available via text as we had questions on the trip. The rv itself is older, which greatly helped with containing the price and Rob is generous with mileage limits. Despite an older model, everything is clean and in good working order. The beds were very comfortable. We loved getting to try out the rv life and Rob was the perfect host to let us do so.

Perfect size RV with an awesome host! We take a yearly RV camping trip with friends (12 years running). This was my second time renting from Rob and of all the hosts we have used, he is the best!!! Not only is he on top of everything, his RV has everything we need and is so easy to drive. Great experience from start to finish!

How to book campgrounds near Heron Bay
State park sites are managed through the Georgia State Parks system. Bookings can easily be secured online or by phone, up to 13 months in advance. Same-day reservations are possible, but sites are not available on a first-come, first-served basis. Booking in advance is recommended, especially on weekends.
Overnight guests pay only one ParkPass fee for the duration of their stay. Price for ParkPasses are not included with the reservation, so add the pass at checkout. Private options like Atlanta South RV Resort and High Falls RV Park and Tiny Home Community book directly through the property, and Atlanta Motor Speedway camping is tied to event calendars, which sell out well before race weekends.
What to expect on-site
State park campgrounds in this area typically offer a mix of back-in and pull-through sites with water and electric hookups. The campground at Indian Springs features multiple loops with wooded, shaded sites that offer good privacy, and facilities include clean restrooms and bathhouses. Amenities include showers, electric hookups, a dump station, and a small camp store.
At High Falls, the check-in office is at a separate location within the park rather than in the campground itself, so stop there first upon arrival. During summer, guests may cool off in the park's swimming pool. Private RV resorts in the area lean toward full hookups, laundry, and longer-stay layouts, while speedway camping is closer to open-lot parking with limited services.
