Campgrounds and RV parks near Hogansville, GA

Hiking is a headline activity. At 9,049 acres, Georgia's largest state park is a hiker's and backpacker's haven, with more than 40 miles of hiking and multi-use trails, including the 23-mile Pine Mountain Trail, plus two lakes for fishing and paddling. Dowdell's Knob, at 1,395 feet, is an overlook along the Pine Mountain Trail with picnic tables and sweeping views of the valley. Paddling and fishing anchor the water side of the trip. Chattahoochee Bend State Park showcases a tract of wilderness in northwest Coweta County, and located in a graceful bend of the Chattahoochee River, the park is a haven for paddlers, campers, and anglers. West Point Lake, adjacent to Highland Marina Resort, adds boating and bass fishing. Families also use the area as a base for Callaway Gardens, Wild Animal Safari in Pine Mountain, and the FDR Little White House historic site.

Spring and fall are the peak RV seasons in west-central Georgia. Wildflowers, mountain laurel, and dogwood bloom from late March into May, and daytime temperatures stay comfortable for hiking. Fall color across the Pine Mountain ridge typically peaks from late October into mid-November, drawing weekend crowds to state park loops. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Humidity can be quite high at times and thunderstorms are common during the late spring and summer months. Tick pressure runs high on wooded trails, so long pants and repellent are useful. Weekends fill quickly at state parks, and shaded sites move first. Winter is the quietest stretch. Freezes occur but rarely last long, and the FD Roosevelt Campground is open year-round, as are the other properties in the area. Rainfall is heaviest in late winter and early spring, so paddlers should watch river levels on the Chattahoochee. Most of the river is flat, but water levels and current vary. Holiday weekends and spring break drive the strongest booking demand.

Expect wooded, rolling terrain and a mix of paved and gravel roads. Chattahoochee Bend is off the beaten path, making it a quiet and secluded escape, though some approach roads are described as challenging for larger vehicles. Cell service is inconsistent, and the nearest full-service supplies are 25 to 30 minutes away in Newnan or LaGrange, so arrive stocked. State park sites typically include water and electric with a central dump station rather than full sewer hookups at every site. At FD Roosevelt, every site has access to 30- or 50-amp electrical hookups, water hookups, a fire pit, a picnic table, and a grill, though host campsites are the only sites that also provide sewer hookups. The campground offers dumpsters, picnic shelters, overflow parking, restrooms with showers, a laundry facility, and a dump station, and each loop has a grey water disposal station. The campground offers 115 tent, trailer, and RV sites with electrical hookups, including 30- and 50-amp connections, pull-through sites, and water hookups, with some sites overlooking the lake and others among pines and hardwoods.
