Campgrounds and RV parks near Mountain City, GA

Tallulah Gorge is one of the most dramatic canyons in the eastern United States. The two-mile chasm dips to nearly 1,000 feet and was sculpted by the Tallulah River over millions of years, marked by six steep waterfalls within. Scheduled whitewater releases occur the first two weekends in April and the first three weekends in November, drawing kayakers and spectators. Rabun County offers hiking on the Appalachian Trail and Bartram Trail, horseback riding, waterfall walks, trout and bass fishing, whitewater paddling on the Wild and Scenic Chattooga River, mountain biking, flat-water kayaking on several lakes, and rock climbing in Tallulah Gorge. The 17-acre lake at Black Rock Mountain features a wheelchair-accessible fishing pier for bass, bream, catfish, and rainbow trout. Families staying near Mountain City typically split time between waterfall day hikes, lake swimming, and short drives into downtown Clayton for restaurants and shops.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV trips to Mountain City. The park is known for its many spring wildflowers, including violets and flame azalea, early summer mountain laurel and rhododendron, and rich fall foliage. Moderate temperatures and the April dam release at Tallulah Gorge make April and May popular for hiking and paddling. Fall brings cooler nights, hardwood color across the Blue Ridge, and the November whitewater releases. Summer is peak booking season. At an elevation of 3,640 feet, temperatures at Black Rock Mountain are typically cooler than in other Georgia parks, which is good news for summer visitors looking to escape Georgia's heat and humidity, but in winter, snow and ice may force some sections to close and the trails can get muddy and slippery. Reserve well in advance for June through August, especially for holiday weekends. Winter is the quietest season and requires planning. Higher-elevation roads can be hazardous, while lower-elevation private RV parks near the valleys stay open more reliably. In the Northeast Georgia mountains, the driest months tend to be September and October, while March is typically the wettest.

Mountain roads are the defining feature of the area. From Clayton, take US-441 north for approximately 3 miles, then turn left onto Black Rock Mountain Parkway and follow it 3 miles to the park entrance; the road is steep and winding with sharp switchbacks. The 44 standard campsites accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs with water and 30-amp electric hookups, while 12 walk-in tent sites offer a more secluded experience with bear boxes provided for food storage. Drivers new to towing should factor in low gears and cooling stops. Tent campers will appreciate the walk-in and backcountry sites that allow extra privacy, and bear boxes are provided to protect food. Store food and coolers securely. Alcohol is prohibited on all Georgia State Parks property. Cell coverage is spotty at higher elevations, so download maps before heading up.
