Campgrounds near North Decatur
North Decatur sits in DeKalb County just east of downtown Atlanta, putting RV travelers inside the metro but within a short drive of the state's most-visited campground. The closest full-service option is Stone Mountain Park Family Campground, a metro-Atlanta property with more than 400 wooded sites offering a mix of full hook-ups, partial hook-ups with water and electricity, and primitive tent sites. It sits inside a 3,200-acre park roughly fifteen miles east of the city.
Additional nearby options include Stone Mountain Campground, Jones RV Park, and Stone Mountain Heights RV-Mobile Home Park, all clustered on the east side of the metro. On the northwest side, Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort offers an alternative base closer to I-75 and Kennesaw.
North Decatur itself has no campgrounds within its immediate boundaries, so travelers should expect a short highway drive to reach a site. The trade-off is straightforward access to Atlanta attractions, Emory University, and the CDC corridor while parking the rig outside the urban core.
Things to do near North Decatur
Stone Mountain Park anchors the area. The park offers hiking, a scenic railroad, and a summit skyride to the top of the granite dome, along with a lake, biking trails, and seasonal festivals. Several marked hiking trails give kids and adults a mix of easy loops and a walk-up route to the summit.
Inside Atlanta, families can reach the Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta, the Atlanta Botanical Garden, the World of Coca-Cola, and the BeltLine trail system in under thirty minutes from most east-side campgrounds. Piedmont Park and Fernbank Museum of Natural History sit especially close to North Decatur.
For a slower day, Arabia Mountain National Heritage Area and the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area offer paddling, fishing, and shaded trails without the theme-park crowds.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around North Decatur. March through May brings blooming dogwoods and mild afternoons, while September through November delivers cooler nights and lighter humidity. Both shoulder seasons align with lower rainfall risk and the widest campground availability. Atlanta has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and cool, wet winters, and rainfall is spread across the year with a drier tilt in autumn.
Summer is peak family-travel season, but expect heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. Stone Mountain Park's seasonal attractions, laser show, and warm-weather activities run at full schedule during this period, so sites near the lake book earliest. Independence Day and Labor Day weekends fill months ahead.
Winter is the quietest stretch. Freezing nights occur but are not constant, and measurable snow is rare. Most private parks stay open year-round, and holiday light events at Stone Mountain draw steady December traffic.

How to book a site
Stone Mountain Park Family Campground and Stone Mountain Campground both use the Campspot platform for reservations. Book directly through the park's website or the Campspot listing, and confirm site type before finalizing: full hook-up, partial hook-up, primitive, yurt, or safari tent. A two-night minimum applies to most reservations, with a three-night minimum on major holiday weekends such as Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Seven nights is the general maximum, with a longer allowance for motorhomes.
Private parks such as Jones RV Park, Stone Mountain Heights RV-Mobile Home Park, and Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort take reservations by phone or through their own websites. For summer weekends and any date around Stone Mountain's seasonal festivals, reserving eight to twelve weeks ahead is prudent, and lakefront sites go earliest.
What to expect on arrival
At Stone Mountain, plan for a daily per-vehicle parking fee at the gate in addition to the campsite reservation. Campers with reservations receive a parking pass covering the length of their stay once they register at the campground. The east gate off Highway 78 gives the most direct route to the campground; after entering, follow Stonewall Jackson Drive to the campground registration area.
Sites vary in levelness and tree cover, so bring extra blocks and check site notes at booking. The central part of the campground has restrooms with showers, a general store, playground, swimming pool, and sand volleyball court, with additional comfort stations spread around the loops and laundry facilities available on site. Cell coverage is strong across the metro; onsite Wi-Fi can be inconsistent.
