Campgrounds near Oak Park, Georgia
Oak Park is a small town in Emanuel County in southeast Georgia, about midway between Macon and Savannah and a short drive from Vidalia and Swainsboro. RV travelers use it as a quiet base for exploring the Ohoopee and Altamaha river country, with a mix of private RV parks and Georgia state park campgrounds within roughly an hour's drive.
The closest full-hookup options are private parks oriented around Vidalia, including Runway Retreat RV Resort and Hidden Forest RV Club, both geared to longer RVs with 30 and 50-amp service. Ohoopee River Campground sits along the Ohoopee River and offers a more rustic riverfront experience. For state-managed sites, George L. Smith State Park near Twin City is best known for its refurbished Parrish Mill and Pond, a combination gristmill, sawmill, covered bridge and dam built in 1880, with paddling through cypress stands as the main draw. Jack Hill State Park in Reidsville was renamed from Gordonia-Alatamaha in 2020 and pairs camping with an 18-hole golf course, a 12-acre lake, and a splash pad.
Things to do near Oak Park
Paddling is the headline activity. At George L. Smith State Park, visitors can hop into a kayak or canoe and explore the thick stands of cypress and tupelo trees draped with Spanish moss, with park boats available for rental and seven miles of trail for those who prefer to stay on land. The Ohoopee and Altamaha rivers offer flat-water floats and bank fishing for bass and bream.
Families with kids often anchor a trip at Jack Hill State Park for the splash pad, miniature golf, paddle boats, and the Brazell's Creek course. The Par 71 layout plays to just under 7,000 yards from the tips, boasting five sets of tees, with a signature Par 3 that plays over scenic wetlands to a large island green. Cyclists and hikers can use the short nature trails at both state parks; short nature trails offer walking opportunities when not closed for storm damage, so check trail status before arrival. In town, Vidalia hosts the Vidalia Onion Museum and a sweet-onion festival each spring.
