Porterdale sits in Newton County along the Yellow River, about 35 miles east of Atlanta and roughly six miles south of Interstate 20. The location puts RV renters within a short drive of several full-service campgrounds and a large Georgia state park, making it a practical base for Piedmont-region trips that mix water recreation, trails, and easy highway access.
The closest option is Riverside Estates RV Park, followed by the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers, which offers a full-service RV park with more than 140 sites equipped with water, electric, and sewer service near the Stable Complex and the Walker Arena Complex. Brooks Lake, a privately owned campground located about 25 miles east of Atlanta and 5 miles north of I-20 in Conyers, provides another nearby stop with a 50-acre spring-fed lake.
For a state-park experience, Hard Labor Creek State Park sits about 30 minutes east via I-20 near Rutledge. Its modern campground includes tent, trailer, and RV sites, 20 cottages, and a separate equestrian camping area with stalls, along with two lakes, a swim beach, and The Creek Golf Course.
Things to do near Porterdale
Water and trail activities dominate the area. Hard Labor Creek State Park offers a wide range of recreational opportunities in a wooded setting, with a lakeside beach popular for swimming in summer, more than 24 miles of trails for hikers and horseback riders, and a private camping area near stalls for horse owners. Two lakes on the property support fishing and non-motorized boating.
At the Georgia International Horse Park, RV guests have direct access to a large equestrian and events complex on roughly 1,400 acres, with more than 15 miles of horse trails and Olympic-designed mountain bike trails from the 1996 Games. The 18-hole Iron Hoof Disc Golf Course sits inside the park, and an Arnold Palmer-designed golf course is on the same grounds. Brooks Lake adds fishing for bass, bream, crappie, and catfish, plus canoe rentals. Downtown Covington and the Yellow River corridor add walkable dining within a short drive of Porterdale.

The Porterdale area has a humid subtropical climate under the Köppen Cfa classification. Summers are hot and muggy, winters are short and cool with steady rain, and precipitation is spread across every month of the year. That pattern shapes when RV renters should book and what to expect on arrival.
Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV camping. Daytime highs from mid-March through May typically run in the 60s and 70s Fahrenheit, and September through early November brings similar comfortable ranges as humidity eases. These shoulder seasons line up with wildflower and foliage conditions on Piedmont trails and with lighter competition for state-park sites outside holiday weekends.
Summer draws families for lake swimming at Hard Labor Creek, but afternoon thunderstorms are frequent and highs regularly reach the upper 80s to low 90s. Winter camping is possible with a heated RV, though rain is common, December is the wettest month locally, and seasonal facilities such as the swim beach are closed. Verify group-camp and cottage availability before booking off-season.

Working with Rob was wonderful. We had a medical issue that required a shift in dates and possible postponement and he could not have been more accommodating. We are new to rv travel and he gave thorough walk through, let me record it, and was also very available via text as we had questions on the trip. The rv itself is older, which greatly helped with containing the price and Rob is generous with mileage limits. Despite an older model, everything is clean and in good working order. The beds were very comfortable. We loved getting to try out the rv life and Rob was the perfect host to let us do so.

Perfect size RV with an awesome host! We take a yearly RV camping trip with friends (12 years running). This was my second time renting from Rob and of all the hosts we have used, he is the best!!! Not only is he on top of everything, his RV has everything we need and is so easy to drive. Great experience from start to finish!

How to book a campsite near Porterdale
State-park sites use the Georgia State Parks reservation system. Reservations at Hard Labor Creek State Park Campground are available up to 13 months in advance and are highly recommended, especially for summer weekends and holidays when the beach and golf course draw heavy traffic. Equestrian sites at Hard Labor Creek and the cottages book through the same portal on separate inventory.
The Georgia International Horse Park handles bookings directly rather than through a state system. Individuals wanting to overnight who are not associated with a particular event should contact the park office directly. Due to limited capacity and show schedules, guests must call in advance to reserve a space, and those staying for a specific event or show need to contact the event promoter. Riverside Estates RV Park and Brooks Lake are private operators; book through their own websites or by phone, and call ahead during major Atlanta-area events.
What to expect at campgrounds near Porterdale

Eleven premium sites add water and sewer, both pull-through and back-in configurations are available, and restrooms with showers serve the loop. Sites are pet friendly.
At the Georgia International Horse Park, the RV park has more than 140 sites, is open all year, accepts big rigs, and offers water, electric, and sewer service along with showers and a dump station. Reservations are required and the park is RV-only, with no tent camping. Cell service is generally reliable across the area, and grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Covington and Conyers within a short drive.
