Camping near Sandersville, Georgia
Sandersville sits in Washington County in east-central Georgia, roughly halfway between Atlanta and Savannah along the Fall Line. The area is a small-town base for RV travelers exploring rural middle Georgia, with lakes, pine forests, and historic downtowns within a short drive. Local infrastructure is oriented around Highway 15 and Route 540, the Fall Line Freeway, making the region straightforward to reach by motorhome or trailer.
Campground options range from small private RV parks in and around town to a state-run lakefront campground nearby. Bailey Creek Campground and Sanwar RV Resort sit within Sandersville itself, offering hookups and easy access to shops and restaurants. Warthen RV Park lies just north of town, while Hamburg State Park provides a more traditional public campground on Hamburg Lake near Mitchell. D&D Outdoor Retreat, southeast of Sandersville near Wrightsville, rounds out the nearby options for travelers wanting a more rural setting.
Sandersville is known regionally as the Kaolin Capital of the World, and the surrounding countryside supports fishing, paddling, and short forest outings within a 30-minute radius.
Things to do around Sandersville
Hamburg State Park is the main outdoor draw within easy reach. The park sits on Hamburg Lake, fed by the Little Ogeechee River, and offers fishing for largemouth bass, crappie, and bream, plus a boat ramp and a fishing pier. Canoes, kayaks, jon boats, aqua cycles, and trolling motors are available for rent at the park office from March 15 through November 30. A restored 1921 water-powered gristmill on site is still operational and grinds corn during scheduled events, with public grinding held on selected Saturdays from March through October.
In town, downtown Sandersville centers on Haynes Street and features the historic Washington County Courthouse, the Brown House Museum, and the Old Jail Museum. The annual Kaolin Festival in October brings a parade, vendors, mine tours, and live entertainment to downtown.

Sandersville has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and short, mild winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV camping, with daytime highs generally in the 70s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than mid-summer. Wildflowers, longer daylight, and active fishing on Hamburg Lake make March through May a popular window, and October, timed to the Kaolin Festival and cooler evenings, is another strong choice.
Summer brings heat, high humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Rain is heaviest from May through September, and campers should expect brief but intense downpours. Shaded lakefront sites, such as those at Hamburg State Park, help moderate afternoon temperatures.
Winters are generally mild, though nighttime lows can dip below freezing. Measurable snow is rare, but cold rain and gusty fronts pass through. Hamburg State Park's boat and paddlecraft rentals typically run from March 15 through November 30, and the on-site visitor center is seasonal, so shoulder-season travelers should confirm hours before arrival.
How to book campgrounds near Sandersville
Hamburg State Park reservations are handled through the Georgia State Parks system, powered by ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked online at GaStateParks.org or by phone at 1-800-864-7275. Non-residents can book up to 13 months in advance, and Georgia residents up to 14 months. A 50 percent deposit confirms most reservations booked 15 or more days out, with the balance due at check-in, while bookings within 14 days require payment in full. A daily ParkPass fee applies per vehicle and is paid once for the length of an overnight stay.
Private parks in the area, including Bailey Creek Campground, Sanwar RV Resort, Warthen RV Park, and D&D Outdoor Retreat, are typically booked directly with the operator by phone or through the park's own website or Facebook page. Weekends around the Kaolin Festival and holiday weekends from spring through fall are the tightest for state park sites.
What to expect on the ground
Hamburg State Park offers shaded sites along the edge of Hamburg Lake with hot showers, water and electric hookups, and a dump station. Cell coverage on the campsite loop is very limited, and there is a single bathhouse, so campers used to full-service resorts should plan accordingly. Wildlife around the lake includes turtles, alligators, raccoons, deer, and a wide variety of birds.
Private parks in the Sandersville area tend to be small. Bailey Creek Campground, for example, is a compact RV park with roughly ten sites offering 30-amp electric, water, and sewer, and it operates year-round. Expect a quiet, small-town atmosphere rather than a large resort setting.
Sandersville itself has grocery stores, restaurants, and fuel a short drive from most nearby campgrounds, which makes provisioning straightforward between longer outings to the lake or state park.
