Campgrounds near Sardis, Georgia
Sardis sits in Burke County in east-central Georgia, roughly an hour south of Augusta and about an hour and a half northwest of Savannah. The area is flat pine-and-hardwood country cut by the Savannah River to the east and the Ogeechee River drainage to the west, which shapes most of the local camping options.
RV travelers passing through the region can choose between full-hookup private parks and a nearby state park with hookup sites and cottages. Ponderosa RV Park Inc. and Made In the Shade Campground and RV Park serve as convenient private-park stops, while Savannah River RV Park and Lakeview Plantation put campers close to the river corridor east of town.
The closest public land option is Magnolia Springs State Park near Millen, which occupies more than 1,000 acres and is built around a spring flowing 7 million gallons of water per day. It is the main draw for weekend campers looking for hookups, hiking, and lake fishing within a short drive of Sardis.
Things to do near Sardis
Magnolia Springs State Park anchors most trip itineraries. The park has a boardwalk over the clear spring where visitors watch for alligators, turtles, and other wildlife, plus a 28-acre lake for fishing and paddling. A bike loop tied to the Muddy Spokes Club and a network of flat trails suit families and casual riders, and the on-site Camp Lawton museum interprets the site's Civil War prison history.
Outside the park, the Savannah River corridor offers bank fishing, boat launches, and quiet paddling. Day trips reach Augusta to the north and Savannah's historic district to the southeast, both within about ninety minutes. Kayak, canoe, paddle-boat, and bike rentals are available at Magnolia Springs for guests without their own gear.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of Georgia. Daytime highs sit in the 70s, humidity is manageable, and wildflowers and hardwood color show up on the trails. March tends to be the wettest month across much of Georgia, so campers should plan for passing storms.
Summer is long, hot, and humid, with July highs averaging around 91°F in Millen and afternoon thunderstorms common. August is typically the wettest month locally. Campgrounds stay open, but shaded sites, electric hookups for air conditioning, and early-morning activity windows become important. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in late summer and early fall.
Winter is short and mild by North American standards. January highs average in the mid-50s and lows near 40°F, hard freezes are limited, and demand at both state and private parks drops sharply, making mid-week bookings easy to secure.
How to book
Magnolia Springs State Park is reserved through the Georgia State Parks system, operated by ReserveAmerica. Sites and cottages can be booked online at the Georgia State Parks reservations portal or by calling 1-800-864-7275. Reservations open up to 13 months in advance, and Georgia residents can book 14 months out.
A daily ParkPass is required for every vehicle and is not included in the site fee. Overnight guests pay the ParkPass fee once per vehicle for the duration of their stay. Check-in is between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., and park gates lock at 10 p.m., so late arrivals should call the park office in advance.
Private parks in the area, including Ponderosa RV Park Inc., Made In the Shade Campground and RV Park, Savannah River RV Park, and Lakeview Plantation, are booked directly with each property by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect on site
At Magnolia Springs State Park, the main RV loop offers 26 level sites with water and electric hookups; a small number of host or premium sites add sewer, and a dump station serves the rest. Three walk-in tent sites sit in a wooded area about 100 yards from the main loop, reached by a sandy single-lane road. Most sites accommodate rigs up to 40 feet, though a few back-ins are curved rather than straight.
The bath house has flush toilets, hot showers, and laundry. Kayak, canoe, paddle-boat, and bike rentals are handled through the park. Alligators are commonly seen along the lake shoreline, and campers should keep pets leashed and food secured. A 10-horsepower motor limit applies on the lake.
Private parks in the Sardis area generally offer full hookups and longer pull-throughs, so travelers wanting sewer service or extended stays often prefer them over the state park loop.
