Camping near Scottdale, Georgia
Scottdale sits in DeKalb County just inside I-285, roughly 10 miles east of downtown Atlanta and a short drive from Stone Mountain Park. RV renters use it as a low-traffic staging point for the metro area: close to Decatur, Emory University, and the CDC, with quick access to US-78 east toward Stone Mountain and I-20 west into the city.
Most overnight options are private RV parks rather than public campgrounds, since DeKalb County itself has no public RV camping. Stone Mountain Heights RV-Mobile Home Park and Jones RV Park sit closest to Scottdale, while Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort covers the northwest metro and Atlanta South RV Resort serves travelers coming up I-75. Brooks Lake offers a smaller, quieter alternative nearby.
The largest camping destination in the area is Stone Mountain Park itself, a 3,200-acre attraction park just outside Atlanta with a large family campground about 15 minutes east of Scottdale.
Things to do around Scottdale
Stone Mountain Park is the dominant draw. The park sits on 3,200 acres and includes recreational activities and family-friendly attractions and events available seasonally, along with hiking trails, a lake, a walking and cycling loop around the mountain, and a summit skyride. It works well as a full-day outing from any of the local RV parks.
In Scottdale itself, families use the PATH Foundation's Stone Mountain Trail, a paved multi-use path that runs from Atlanta out to the park. Downtown Decatur is a few minutes west with restaurants and a walkable square.
For a full Atlanta day, MARTA rail stations at Avondale and Kensington are close by, which lets RVers leave the rig at the campground and ride into the city for the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, or Zoo Atlanta.

The Atlanta metro has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, and Scottdale follows the same pattern. Camping is a year-round activity here, but the shoulder seasons are the most comfortable for RV travel. March through May brings warm days, blooming dogwoods and azaleas, and lower humidity than mid-summer. October and November offer cool nights, fall color, and easier site availability.
Summer, June through August, is peak family season and the wettest season, with heavy downpours or afternoon thunderstorms and highs regularly near 90. Book Stone Mountain and the closer-in parks well in advance for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends.
Winters are mild but variable. Daytime highs are often in the 50s, and freezing temperatures happen during 36 nights a year on average, from November to March, and once a year the temperature does not make it above freezing all day. Most private RV parks in the area stay open all winter.

How to book near Scottdale
Private parks near Scottdale, including Stone Mountain Heights RV-Mobile Home Park, Jones RV Park, Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort, and Atlanta South RV Resort, are booked directly with the property by phone or through their websites. Many also list on aggregator platforms such as Campspot, RoverPass, and Good Sam. Monthly and extended stays are common in this market, so nightly inventory can be tight.
Stone Mountain Park Campground, with over 400 RV, pop-up, and tent sites plus yurt, safari tent, and RV rentals, can be booked through Campspot or the park's own booking page. Holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill early.
A one-time parking fee is required and can be purchased online in advance or at the park entrance gate upon arrival, separate from the campsite reservation.
What to expect on the ground
Scottdale is a built-up suburban area, so campgrounds here feel more like RV parks than wilderness sites. Expect paved or gravel pads, full hookups at most locations, and easy access to grocery stores, fuel, dump stations, and propane. Big-rig access is generally good, though a few older parks have tight interior roads and overhanging trees.
Atlanta traffic is the main planning factor. I-285, I-20, and US-78 back up sharply during weekday rush hours, so arrivals and departures are easier mid-morning or early afternoon. GPS routing to Stone Mountain Park should be double-checked, since some routes send RVs toward a low underpass at the West Gate; the East Gate off US-78 avoids it.
Cell coverage is strong across the metro, and most parks offer Wi-Fi, though speeds vary.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Scottdale, GA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Scottdale, GA?
RV rental in Scottdale, GA is one of the more affordable ways to explore the South. On RVezy, you can typically find travel trailers from about $90 to $175 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A coaches from $225 to $375 per night. Travel trailers are the cheap RV rental Scottdale option most first-timers pick, especially if you already have a tow vehicle. For the best deals, book mid-week, target shoulder months like March or November, and use the price filter to sort by budget. Bundling delivery to a nearby campground often saves more than driving yourself, since you skip Atlanta traffic entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Scottdale,GeorgiaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Scottdale, GA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Scottdale, GA. Georgia does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and trailers listed on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, and fifth wheels under typical recreational weights. You'll just need to be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the booking platform, so there's no in-person paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly the whole verification process wraps up, often the same day you book.
dds.georgia.gov/license-classes-and-feesWhat protection is included with my RVezy booking in Scottdale?
You're covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Scottdale, GA on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out toward Stone Mountain or the North Georgia mountains with real peace of mind. The protection plan helps cover physical damage to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level (Essential, Standard, or Premium) during checkout, not the host. Higher tiers lower your out-of-pocket responsibility if anything unexpected happens on your Georgia RV trip. Pro tip: review each coverage tier carefully on the RVezy insurance and protection page before confirming your booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I cancel my Scottdale RV rental if my plans change?
Yes, and that flexibility is one of the best parts of booking through RVezy. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every rental in Scottdale, so the experience is consistent no matter which RV you pick. There is a money-back grace period right after you book, and depending on how far out your trip start date is, you may still be eligible for a partial or full refund. If a host cancels, RVezy refunds the guest or provides travel credits so your plans stay on track. Before you confirm your Scottdale RV trip, review the cancellation details in the RVezy Help Center so you know exactly where you stand.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Scottdale, GA?
Absolutely, and your pup will love it. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental Scottdale options, and you can find them in seconds using the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy. Once you're on the road, Georgia is dog-welcoming: Stone Mountain Park allows leashed dogs on most trails, Sweetwater Creek State Park's Red Trail is a local favorite, and Piedmont Park in nearby Atlanta has a dedicated off-leash dog park. Most pet-friendly hosts ask that you keep pets off furniture and clean up before drop-off. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed; many will even leave a welcome treat for your travel buddy.
gastateparks.org/StoneMountainCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Scottdale?
Yes, RV delivery Scottdale is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig through metro Atlanta. Many hosts will deliver the RV directly to your campground, a friend's driveway, or even an event venue. They'll level it, hook up water, power, and sewer, and walk you through every system before they leave. Common delivery destinations include Stone Mountain Park Campground (about 10 minutes east), Sweetwater Creek State Park (about 30 minutes west), and Atlanta South RV Resort (about 35 minutes south). Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, along with their per-mile delivery fees. Pro tip: bundle delivery with setup for a true turn-key Georgia RV trip.
gastateparks.org/StoneMountainHow far can I drive on my RV road trip from Scottdale?
Pretty far, and Scottdale's location just inside I-285 makes it an ideal launchpad. From your Scottdale RV trip starting point you can reach Helen and the Blue Ridge foothills in about 90 minutes (around 90 miles), Chattanooga, TN in about 2 hours (about 120 miles), Savannah's coast in about 4 hours (around 250 miles), the Great Smoky Mountains in roughly 3.5 hours (about 180 miles), and Charleston, SC in about 5 hours (around 300 miles). Each host sets their own mileage policy, with many offering 100 to 150 free miles per night and some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage if you're planning a multi-state loop, otherwise prepay a mileage bundle, it's usually cheaper than per-mile overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Scottdale,GeorgiaWhere are the best campgrounds near Scottdale, GA?
You've got fantastic options within an hour of Scottdale. Stone Mountain Park Campground (about 6 miles east) offers 400+ sites with full hookups, a lakefront, and the famous laser show in summer. Sweetwater Creek State Park's Yurt Village and RV sites (about 30 minutes west) put you next to Civil War mill ruins and beautiful riverside trails. Atlanta South RV Resort in McDonough (35 minutes south) is a Good Sam favorite with a pool and pull-throughs for big rigs. For mountain views, Don Carter State Park on Lake Lanier (about 70 minutes north) has lakeside full-hookup sites. Pro tip: state park campgrounds book up fast on weekends, so reserve early through the official Georgia State Parks reservation system, especially March through October.
gastateparks.org/CampingWhen is the best time of year for RV camping near Scottdale?
The sweet spot is spring (mid-March through May) and fall (late September through early November), when daytime highs sit in the 65 to 80°F range and nights cool to the 50s, perfect for campfires. Summer in Scottdale runs hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but the trade-off is long daylight and lake season at Lake Lanier and Allatoona. Winters are mild, usually 35 to 55°F, which means RV camping Scottdale is genuinely a year-round activity. Dogwood blooms in April and peak fall color in late October to early November are the local insider highlights. Pro tip: book your RV rental Georgia at least 6 to 8 weeks ahead for spring and fall weekends.
weather.gov/ffc/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, first time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in Scottdale. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup (or at delivery): they'll walk you through driving basics, the propane system, water and waste tanks, the awning, generator, and all the appliances, then leave you with a cheat sheet and their phone number. You can also message your host any time during the trip. If you're nervous about Atlanta traffic, choose a host who offers delivery so the RV arrives ready to use at your campground. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C or campervan rental Scottdale for your first trip, they drive much like a large SUV and fit easily into Georgia state park sites.
dot.ga.gov/DriveSmartWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat tire on I-285, a dead battery at Stone Mountain, or a mechanical hiccup heading up to the Blue Ridge Mountains, help is one phone call away. Roadside covers towing, lockouts, tire service, jump-starts, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a quick text away for questions about quirks specific to their RV, like how the awning retracts or where the inverter switch lives. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after the trip too. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pulling out of the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Scottdale RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Absolutely. Most hosts welcome interstate travel, which makes a Scottdale-based motorhome rental a great base for exploring Tennessee, the Carolinas, Florida, and Alabama. Popular cross-state routes include Scottdale to the Great Smoky Mountains (TN/NC), Scottdale to Charleston, SC, and Scottdale down to St. Augustine, FL. Cross-border trips to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance terms, so message the host directly from the listing before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: tell the host your route upfront so they can confirm mileage allowance and any state-specific requirements in one quick conversation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat's the fuel budget like for an RV rental in Georgia?
Fuel in Georgia is friendlier on the wallet than in most of the country. Georgia regularly has gas and diesel prices below the national average, often $0.20 to $0.40 cheaper per gallon. Expect realistic mileage of 7 to 10 mpg for a Class A, 10 to 14 mpg for a Class C, 15 to 20 mpg for a campervan rental Scottdale, and 12 to 16 mpg for your tow vehicle with a travel trailer. For a 3-night trip staying within 200 miles of Scottdale, most renters budget $150 to $300 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up before re-entering metro Atlanta where prices spike, and use the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest stations along I-85 or I-75.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Scottdale?
For the most popular spots, sooner is better. Georgia State Parks like Stone Mountain, Sweetwater Creek, and Don Carter accept reservations up to 13 months in advance through the official Georgia State Parks reservation portal or by calling 1-800-864-7275. Spring and fall weekends, plus any holiday weekend, can sell out 3 to 6 months out. Private parks like Atlanta South RV Resort usually have more flexibility but still fill on race weekends and major Atlanta events. Pro tip: if your dates are sold out, check the reservation site daily; cancellations open spots regularly, especially mid-week.
gastateparks.org/ReservationsWhat's it like driving an RV around Scottdale and metro Atlanta?
Honestly, it's very manageable, especially if you avoid the I-285 perimeter during rush hour (roughly 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m.). Scottdale itself sits just outside the perimeter near Decatur, with relatively easy access to I-285 and US-78. Watch for low clearances on older bridges in Decatur and downtown Atlanta, most RVs are 10 to 13 feet tall, so stick to interstate routes and Georgia DOT-approved truck routes. Summer afternoon thunderstorms can drop heavy rain fast, so plan longer travel days for mornings. Pro tip: nervous about driving in the city? Book a host who delivers, or aim straight north on I-85 toward the mountains where traffic eases up about 45 minutes outside town.
dot.ga.gov/DriveSmart/SafetyOperationWhat amenities do campgrounds near Scottdale typically offer?
You'll find excellent facilities at almost every campground within an hour of Scottdale. Georgia State Parks all have dump stations, and most offer 30/50-amp electric, water hookups, modern bathhouses with hot showers, laundry, and on-site camp stores. Private parks like Atlanta South RV Resort add full sewer hookups, pools, Wi-Fi, and propane refill. Stone Mountain Park Campground has a marina, beach, and seasonal laser shows right on property. To dump tanks or top off fresh water mid-trip, Stone Mountain, Sweetwater Creek, and most KOAs around Atlanta all have dedicated dump stations open to overnight guests. Pro tip: a ParkPass is required for all vehicles in Georgia State Parks ($5/day or $50/year) and isn't included in your camping fee, so grab one at the visitor center.
gastateparks.org/CampingWhat's inside a typical RV rental in Scottdale?
More than you'd think. A typical RV rental in Scottdale, GA comes fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible sofa or dinette beds for extra sleepers, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, stovetop, microwave, sink, and cookware, plus a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet. Most Class C and Class A motorhomes have rooftop air conditioning (essential for Georgia summers), a furnace, TV, and often a generator for boondocking. Larger units include outdoor speakers, awnings, and exterior kitchens. Seatbelted seating varies by RV, so confirm sleeps versus seatbelts when booking a family RV trip Scottdale. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities tab for Wi-Fi hotspots, solar panels, and pet bowls, lots of hosts include extras you'd otherwise have to pack.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehicle-rv-safetyWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Scottdale?
Hosts in Scottdale offer lots of ways to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and kitchen kits ($40 to $90), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, generators (often $25 to $50/night), bike racks, kayaks, portable grills, and pet packages. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Scottdale, with delivery available from many hosts for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles billed at $0.30 to $0.45 each, while some advertise unlimited mileage, perfect for an RV road trip from Scottdale to the coast or the Smokies. Pro tip: confirm pickup time, dump station instructions, and fuel return policy in writing through the RVezy chat before your trip.
dot.ga.gov/DS/TravelHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the secure RVezy platform, no cash, no awkward driveway exchanges. When you book your RV rental in Scottdale, GA, you pay the rental total (including the protection plan and any add-ons) by credit card through the site. A refundable security deposit is held separately before pickup; the amount varies by RV and is clearly displayed on each listing before you confirm. As long as the RV comes back in the agreed condition, mileage, and fuel level, the hold is released after the trip. Pro tip: take a quick video walkaround at both pickup and drop-off and send it to your host through RVezy chat, it's the easiest way to keep your deposit return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best RV road trip ideas from Scottdale?
Scottdale's central Georgia location makes it a launchpad for incredible loops. The North Georgia Mountains Loop (Scottdale to Helen to Blue Ridge to Amicalola Falls, about 250 miles) is the classic fall-color drive. The Coastal Georgia Run (Scottdale to Savannah to Jekyll Island, about 300 miles one way) delivers beaches, marshes, and historic squares. The Tennessee River Route (Scottdale to Chattanooga to the Smokies, about 350-mile loop) packs in waterfalls and mountain hikes. For a quick weekend, head to Lake Lanier or Lake Allatoona, both under 90 minutes from your pickup. Pro tip: weekday departures dodge Atlanta traffic completely, leave Scottdale before 6 a.m. or after 7 p.m. on Fridays for the smoothest start to your Georgia RV trip.
