Campgrounds near Thomson, Georgia
Thomson sits in east-central Georgia along the I-20 corridor between Atlanta and Augusta, putting RV travelers within a short drive of both Clarks Hill Lake and the Little Ogeechee River. The area is dominated by Georgia State Parks operating on the state reservation system, plus a small number of private RV parks close to town.
Mistletoe State Park is the closest state-run option, set on a peninsula of Clarks Hill Lake, also mapped as Lake Strom Thurmond. The main campground has 93 tent, trailer, and RV sites, plus walk-in tent sites and 10 lakeside cottages. Elijah Clark State Park lies farther up the same lake near Lincolnton, with roughly 170 campsites and 20 two-bedroom lakeside cottages.
West of Thomson, Hamburg State Park offers a quieter setting on Hamburg Lake, fed by the Little Ogeechee River. For travelers who prefer private parks with full hookups closer to town, Ted & Tracy's RV Campground and Heritage RV Park round out the local options.
Things to do around Thomson
Water recreation is the main draw. Clarks Hill Lake, one of the Southeast's largest reservoirs at more than 71,000 acres, supports boating, swimming, paddling, and some of the region's best largemouth bass fishing from launch points at Mistletoe State Park and Elijah Clark State Park. Both parks maintain boat ramps, an accessible fishing pier, and a sandy swimming beach for cooling off during Georgia summers.
On land, Mistletoe has miles of shaded hiking and biking trails through mixed pine and hardwood forest, and Elijah Clark features a replica log cabin museum and the graves of its Revolutionary War namesake. Hamburg State Park adds a different angle: a restored 1921 water-powered gristmill that is still operational and grinds corn during events, along with paddling on Hamburg Lake.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV travel in this part of Georgia. March through May brings warming days and manageable humidity, and September through November cools off after summer heat. The most pleasant windows generally run mid-March into May and mid-September through mid-November.
Summer is hot and humid. July is typically the warmest month, with average highs near 92°F and lows around 72°F, and the heat index can climb to dangerous levels on peak afternoons. Lakeside sites at Mistletoe and Elijah Clark are in strong demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and weekend availability tightens well in advance.
Winters are mild but wet, with occasional freezing nights. Georgia state park campgrounds in this region generally stay open year-round, though Hamburg operates as a self-registration campground open seasonally, so travelers should verify status before arriving. Hurricane Helene also caused damage across this corridor, and some trails at Elijah Clark have been slow to reopen.
How to book a site near Thomson
State park sites at Mistletoe, Hamburg, and Elijah Clark are booked through the Georgia State Parks reservation system, either online or by phone. Reservations open up to 13 months in advance for out-of-state visitors and 14 months in advance for Georgia residents. Sites book up fast for summer and holiday weekends, so booking several months ahead is recommended.
Lakefront sites at both Mistletoe and Elijah Clark are the first to go. When reserving, RV travelers should confirm site length, hookup type (many sites are water and electric only), and proximity to the bathhouse. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles and is not included in the reservation fee, though overnight guests pay it only once for the length of the stay.
Private options such as Ted & Tracy's RV Campground and Heritage RV Park are booked directly with the property and typically offer more full-hookup flexibility.
What to expect on the ground
Campgrounds in the Thomson area are wooded, generally well-shaded, and quiet outside of holiday weekends. Georgia state park sites tend to run water and electric rather than full hookups, with centralized dump stations, though a limited number of full-hookup sites exist at Mistletoe and Elijah Clark. Hamburg State Park has 32 pet-friendly campsites with water and electric hookups, and the RV length limit in the campground is 40 feet, which is typical for the region.
Cell coverage is usable at Mistletoe and Elijah Clark but can be spotty at Hamburg's more remote setting, where AT&T service is often unavailable. Groceries and fuel are easy in Thomson, though Elijah Clark is more rural, with limited services in nearby Lincolnton.
Expect biting insects in warm months, alligators in Hamburg Lake (swimming is not permitted there), and afternoon thunderstorms from late spring through summer. Pack for humidity and bring shade or awning gear for open lakeside sites.
