Campgrounds and RV parks near Toccoa, GA

Hiking is the main draw. Tallulah Gorge State Park features rim trails with overlooks, a suspension bridge sways about 80 feet above the rocky bottom, and a limited number of daily permits allow hikers to descend to the gorge floor. The park issues 100 permits per day for the gorge floor hike, given on a first-come, first-served basis, and permits cannot be reserved in advance. Water activities center on the Georgia Power lakes and the Tallulah River. Lake Yonah draws swimmers, paddlers, and anglers in summer and is well suited to fishing, boating, or camping. River Campground and Lodge sits along the Tallulah River with tubing, fishing, and cycling on site. The Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center inside the state park adds a rainy-day option with exhibits on the canyon's natural and cultural history.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. Daytime temperatures sit in a comfortable range for hiking the gorge rim, and foliage typically peaks in mid to late October across the surrounding ridges. Reservations for these shoulder months fill early, particularly weekends aligned with leaf color. Summer is hot and humid. Summers are hot and muggy, winters are short and cold, and it is wet and partly cloudy year round, with temperatures typically varying from 35°F to 91°F. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and rangers may restrict gorge floor access on high-heat days. Stair access is restricted at noon on days when the heat index reaches the Extreme Caution category, and because the heat index considers both temperature and humidity, there is no single temperature that triggers closure. Winter camping is viable at Tallulah Gorge, which stays open through the cold months, but expect frost and occasional freezing rain. Climbing permits are not issued from February 1 through the third week of March due to peregrine falcon nesting activity, and if nesting activity is confirmed the closure could extend into early June.

Tallulah Gorge's campground is compact and wooded. It offers 52 sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs, all equipped with electric and water hookups, fire rings or grills, and picnic tables. Modern comfort stations provide hot showers and flush toilets, and a dump station serves RV campers. Sites are small but some can handle larger rigs, and the roads in the campground are steep and hilly. Georgia Power sites are more rustic. Tugalo Park is primitive with about 10 gravel sites and a boat launch reached by a steep gravel access road. Note that the road, campground, and boat ramp at the upper end of Lake Yonah have been closed while Georgia Power upgrades the generators at Tugalo Dam, so call ahead to confirm access. The Terrora Day Use Area beach is closed for construction through August 2026, and kayaking will not be available until this project's completion. Cell coverage is spotty inside the canyon country.
