Campgrounds near Union City, Georgia
Union City sits in south Fulton County, roughly 15 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta and about 10 miles from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. For RV travelers, the location works as a base camp: interstates I-85 and I-285 are minutes away, and the city is within an hour of most major Atlanta attractions, Six Flags Over Georgia, and the North Georgia foothills.
Options close to town lean toward full-hookup private parks rather than public campgrounds. Atlanta South RV Resort and Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort cover the metro area with pull-through sites and standard resort amenities, while Sweetwater Creek RV Reserve puts campers near Sweetwater Creek State Park in east Douglas County, about 15 miles from downtown Atlanta.
For motorsport-oriented trips, Atlanta Motor Speedway offers on-site camping just south in Hampton, roughly 30 miles from Union City. Banning Mills RV Park sits farther west near Whitesburg, closer to the Chattahoochee River corridor and adventure attractions in Carroll County.
Things to do near Union City
Sweetwater Creek State Park is the standout day trip. The park offers roughly 15 miles of hiking trails and the 215-acre George Sparks Reservoir, with kayaks and canoes available for rent. The signature trail follows the creek to the ruins of a Civil War-era textile mill, though guided tours are required to enter the ruins themselves.
In town, families use Union City as a jump-off for Six Flags Over Georgia, the College Football Hall of Fame, the Georgia Aquarium, and Zoo Atlanta. Race weekends at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton draw NASCAR crowds.
For outdoor days, the Chattahoochee River corridor and Cochran Mill Park offer waterfalls, trails, and fishing within a short drive of Union City.

Union City has a humid subtropical climate. Spring, from mid-March through May, is generally the most comfortable window for RV camping, with mild days, blooming wildflowers along the Sweetwater trails, and creek levels running high after winter rains.
Summers are hot and humid. From June through August, afternoon thunderstorms are common and daytime highs regularly reach the upper 80s, so full-hookup sites with 50-amp service and shade are worth prioritizing for air conditioning. Autumn brings cooler evenings, lower humidity, and steady demand at state parks and speedway events, with peak foliage typically arriving in November.
Winter camping is possible year-round at most private parks in the area, and Sweetwater Creek State Park stays open through the winter. Georgia State Parks accepts reservations up to 13 months in advance, with Georgia residents able to book up to 14 months out. Hard freezes are infrequent in the metro area but do occur, so winterizing hookups is still smart.
