Camping near Waco, Georgia
Waco sits in Haralson County in west Georgia, roughly an hour west of Atlanta and just off I-20 near the Alabama line. The area is rural and wooded, with rolling foothills, small lakes, and quick highway access to Carrollton, Bremen, and Cedartown. That mix makes it a practical staging point for RV travelers heading to the Atlanta metro, west Georgia state parks, or the Talladega National Forest across the state line.
Options within a short drive range from family resort-style parks to off-road and adventure-focused campgrounds. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Bremen is the closest full-service family park, while Highland Park Off-Road Resort near Cedartown caters to ATV and dirt bike riders. Banning Mills RV Park in Whitesburg pairs full-hookup sites with the on-site Historic Banning Mills adventure resort, and The Rock RV Park in Rockmart sits within easy reach of the Silver Comet Trail.
For a state-park experience, Chattahoochee Bend State Park protects a large tract along the Chattahoochee River south of Waco and offers developed RV sites, walk-in tent sites, and cottages.
Things to do around Waco
Outdoor activities anchor most trips. Chattahoochee Bend State Park protects five miles of river frontage and features the Riverside Trail, a 5.5-mile route along the river with a total potential hiking distance of up to 11 miles, plus a boat ramp for paddling the Chattahoochee. The Silver Comet Trail, a paved rail-trail popular with cyclists and families, runs through nearby Rockmart and connects toward Atlanta.
Off-road riders head to Highland Park Off-Road Resort, which has 40 one-way trails offering about 85 miles of riding, with all trails rated in five levels of difficulty plus a PeeWee track and a 2.3-mile natural terrain MXGP track. Families with younger kids gravitate to Jellystone Park in Bremen for its pools and jump pad, and to Banning Mills for its zipline canopy tour, climbing wall, horseback rides, and kayaking on Snake Creek. Downtown Carrollton adds shops, restaurants, and the Adamson Square area.

West Georgia has a humid subtropical climate, so seasonality drives what a trip feels like more than whether campgrounds are open. Spring, from mid-March through May, is the most comfortable stretch: daytime highs run from the mid-60s to low 80s, wildflowers bloom, and river levels are usually strong for paddling. It is also a wetter part of the year, with March typically the peak rain month, so expect scattered thunderstorms.
Summer runs hot and muggy. Temperatures reach their pinnacle from June through August with average highs near 88°F, and afternoon storms are common. This is peak family-camping season at Jellystone Park in Bremen and other resort parks, and reservations at Chattahoochee Bend State Park fill weeks out for weekends and holidays.
Fall is arguably the best RV season: lower humidity, clear skies, and warm afternoons through October. Winter is mild but damp, with occasional freezes. Snow is rare, and most private parks and state parks stay open year-round, though river-based activities slow.

How to book campsites near Waco
Reservation systems vary by park type. Georgia State Parks, including Chattahoochee Bend, handle campsite reservations through ReserveAmerica, and the park has 37 RV and tent campsites arranged across two loops, plus walk-in tent sites, primitive paddle-in sites, cottages, and a group camping area. State-park sites can be booked up to 13 months in advance, and popular weekends between March and October typically sell out early.
Private parks book directly or through platforms like Campspot and RoverPass. Jellystone Park in Bremen and The Rock RV Park take online reservations, and holiday weekends should be locked in several months out. Banning Mills RV Park currently accepts long-term monthly reservations only by phone due to limited availability. Highland Park Off-Road Resort operates differently, with a dedicated RV lot and cabins alongside primitive tent camping tied to trail use, so call ahead to confirm space.
What to expect on-site
Terrain around Waco is gently rolling and heavily wooded, which means shady sites at most private parks but also uneven pads that may need leveling blocks. At Chattahoochee Bend, the two campground loops feature paved, well-spaced pads with 30- and 50-amp electric and water hookups, and most sites accommodate rigs up to 40 feet, with a dump station centrally located and full-hookup host sites available.
Hookups elsewhere vary. Banning Mills RV Park offers full-hookup graveled sites in a wooded, gated setting with 50-amp service, free WiFi at most sites, showers, and restrooms, though laundry is off-site. Cell service is inconsistent in the wooded gorges and river bottoms, so download maps in advance. Bring bug spray from late spring through early fall, and plan for firewood purchases on site since Georgia discourages transporting outside wood.
