Campgrounds near Wadley, Georgia
Wadley sits in Jefferson County in east-central Georgia, roughly midway between Augusta and Dublin along the Ogeechee River basin. The area is rural and flat, dominated by pine plantations, farmland, and blackwater creeks, which keeps traffic light and campground demand steady rather than seasonal-spike heavy. RV travelers passing through on I-16 or US-1 use Wadley as a quiet overnight stop or a base for exploring south Georgia state parks.
Campground options near Wadley range from small private RV parks to a full-service state park. Warthen RV Park and Sanwar RV Resort offer straightforward hookup sites close to town, while D&D Outdoor Retreat and Bailey Creek Campground cater to travelers looking for a more rural setting.
The closest developed public campground is George L. Smith State Park, about a half-hour drive southeast near Twin City. It anchors the region's outdoor recreation and is the main draw for RV travelers planning more than a one-night stop.
Things to do near Wadley
George L. Smith State Park is built around a cypress- and tupelo-filled mill pond and the historic Parrish Mill, a combination gristmill, sawmill, covered bridge, and dam built in 1880. Paddling the pond by canoe or kayak is the signature activity, and the park rents boats at the office.
Fishing is popular for bass, bream, and catfish, and the park's remote setting makes it strong for birding, with resident species including great blue heron and white ibis. Roughly seven miles of trails loop through pine flatwoods around the pond, and alligators are commonly seen on the water.
Beyond the state park, day trips reach Magnolia Springs State Park to the east, the Ogeechee River for paddling and shoal fishing, and the small-town squares of Louisville, Sandersville, and Swainsboro for local diners and antique shops.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping around Wadley. From mid-March through May, daytime highs sit in the seventies, humidity is manageable, and wildflowers and dogwoods bloom in the pine understory. October and November bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and reliable dry stretches, which is why weekend sites at George L. Smith State Park book out earliest in those months.
Summer is hot and humid. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent from June through August, and biting insects, including mosquitoes and yellow flies near the mill pond, are at their peak. Sites with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing for air conditioning.
Winters are short and mild. Freezing nights occur but hard freezes are uncommon, so most private RV parks around Wadley stay open year-round. State park cottages and campsites remain bookable through winter, and demand is at its lowest between December and mid-February.
How to book near Wadley
George L. Smith State Park uses the Georgia State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Sites can be booked online up to thirteen months in advance, and lakeside pads with water views tend to go first for spring and fall weekends. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles and is not included in the reservation.
New yurts are currently under construction in the campground loop and some RV campsites may be closed, so more information can be obtained by calling the park office before locking in travel dates.
Private campgrounds such as Warthen RV Park, Sanwar RV Resort, Bailey Creek Campground, and D&D Outdoor Retreat generally take reservations by phone or through their own websites, and monthly stays are common.
What to expect on-site
Expect small, quiet campgrounds rather than resort-style properties. George L. Smith Campground features 23 pet-friendly campsites available for RVs, trailers, and tents, with four designated as premium and the remaining nineteen as standard. All campsites have electric and water hookups, the RV length limit is 40 feet, and amenities include a fish cleaning station, comfort stations, playground, and trailer dump station. Cottages are also available in the wooded areas of the park.
Private parks near town typically offer full hookups, gravel or grass pads, and basic amenities such as laundry and Wi-Fi, though cell coverage in the surrounding countryside can be spotty depending on carrier.
The landscape is flat with sandy soil, so leveling is straightforward, and tree cover from loblolly and longleaf pines provides partial shade. Stock up on groceries, propane, and RV supplies in Swainsboro or Louisville, since Wadley itself has limited retail.
