RV camping near Washington, Georgia
Washington sits in Wilkes County in east-central Georgia, roughly halfway between Athens and Augusta and a short drive north of Interstate 20. The town is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the state's Antebellum Trail, small-lake fishing spots, and the woodlands of the upper Piedmont. It works as a quieter alternative to the busier corridors around Lake Oconee and Clarks Hill Reservoir.
Campground options range from small private RV parks to a Georgia state park property. Ted & Tracy's RV Campground offers a straightforward private-park stay close to town. Equestrian - AH Stephens State Park, west of Augusta near Crawfordville, is best known for its equestrian facilities, Civil War museum, and lakeside group camp, with 21 miles of horse trails accessible from a dedicated equestrian campground.
For riders and off-road users, Durhamtown Plantation Sportsmans Resort sits within about an hour's drive. Hesters Bottom Campground and Hester's Bottoms Campground round out the closer river-oriented options for parties looking for a more rustic setting.
Things to do around Washington
Historic touring is a core draw. Washington's downtown includes the Robert Toombs House, and Equestrian - AH Stephens State Park features a museum with one of the finest collections of Civil War artifacts in Georgia. Stephens' home, Liberty Hall, is renovated to its 1875 style, fully furnished and open for tours. Families can pair a house tour with a picnic at the park.
Outdoor activities are close at hand. Visitors can enjoy geocaching, fishing, and boating at the state park's three lakes, and riders traveling with horses have direct trail access from the equestrian campground. Hiking trails cover about four miles of park land.
Off-road enthusiasts head to Durhamtown Plantation Sportsmans Resort for ATV, dirt-bike, and side-by-side trails. Day trips to Clarks Hill Lake, Lake Oconee, and the Broad River add paddling and lake swimming options within an hour's drive.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Georgia. The weather is mild through both shoulder seasons, and the natural surroundings are at their peak. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in March and April, and hardwood color arrives in late October and early November.
Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms typical of the Georgia Piedmont. Sites remain fully open and lake activities are at their peak, but shaded pads and full hookups with 50-amp service are worth prioritizing for air-conditioning loads. Biting insects are active from late spring through early fall, so bug repellent is a must.
Winter is the quiet season. Days are cooler and some facilities may run reduced hours, though the park campground stays open year-round. Freezes are common overnight from December through February, so travelers should confirm water service and plan for below-freezing lows on the coldest nights.
How to book campgrounds near Washington
State park sites at Equestrian - AH Stephens State Park are reserved through the Georgia State Parks system, which uses ReserveAmerica for online bookings. Reservations can be made up to 13 months in advance for non-residents, and Georgia residents can book up to 14 months ahead. Popular weekends in spring and fall fill early, and a 50 percent deposit confirms most reservations. A ParkPass is required for all vehicles and is not included in the reservation fee. For equestrian trail use, a negative coggins test must be presented to the park office for each horse.
Private parks such as Ted & Tracy's RV Campground, Durhamtown Plantation Sportsmans Resort, Hesters Bottom Campground, and Hester's Bottoms Campground are booked directly with the operator by phone or website. Holiday weekends and off-road event weekends at Durhamtown book out ahead, so lock in dates before planning the drive.
What to expect on arrival
Sites in this area lean toward wooded, red-clay Piedmont terrain rather than open pads. At Equestrian - AH Stephens State Park, the main campground loop has 25 sites with water, electric, and sewer hookups, and a modern bath house. Park hours run from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the office open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., so late arrivals should coordinate with staff in advance.
Cell coverage is generally usable on major carriers but can drop in low spots and deeper woods. Grocery, fuel, and propane are available in Washington and Crawfordville, and Augusta and Athens are within an hour for larger supply runs.
Mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers are present spring through fall. Rigs should carry leveling blocks for gently sloped clay pads, and awnings should be retracted when afternoon storms threaten.
